The Challenge event starts with a 5k run, a 1k Kayak and finishes with a 16k cycle.

There is one change to the junior event format. This year it will start with a short Kayak, followed by a 4 k run on a flat circuit and will conclude with a 16 k cycle on a mainly flat course.

All details are on the website. www.cavankayakarun.com. Online registration is also available from the website. There is a free T Shirt with all entries.

The Cavan Kayakarun run is a unique event in this part of the county. Participants in the past have commented on the fun they’ve had taking part in the event and thus the reason why so many continue to return to it year after year. Safety both on road and the water is paramount to the organizers and all routes, junctions and transition areas are well marshaled.

So make a date for a great day’s fun, exercise and competition on Saturday August 6th. Do it as an individual or maybe even better still as part of a two or three person team.

And if you can, remain on for the post Kayakarun Party on Saturday night in Gallonray House. There will be music and celebration. Meet and make new friends in the sporting and adventure race world.  Everyone’s a winner who takes part. The Cavan Kayakarun is all about the joy of entering. Be part of it this year.

Under 14; Feilé na nGael 2016

What an incredible weekends hurling in Tipperary. We were hosted by Roscrea Hurling club who had two teams in the competition one of whom operated in Division 1 which was great for our boys to see. We had great games v Roscrea, Rosenallis from Laois and the club we hosted in 2015 Caiseal Gaels from Mayo who went on to reach the Shield final only to lose narrowly to Rosenallis. Plus the boys got to watch some top class hurling from the elite sides in the competition and pick up some ideas to use on the fields of Cavan and further afield in future. Our players had fantastic host families who couldn’t do more to keep the boys entertained.

The boys were exemplarily well behaved all weekend and were a credit to their families and their club. Well done to Kathryn, Maurice, Sharon and Brendan for all their hard work in preparing the boys for what is a huge undertaking. This is a great weekend of learning for all our players and was hugely enjoyable for all. Thanks to all the vocal East Cavan Gaels supporters who travelled in great numbers to Tipperary. They now know there is hurling in Cavan!!

Roll on 2017!

Congratulations:

Local man, Barry Kavanagh, came first in the landscape garden section at Bloom 2016 in the Phoenix Park last week with his garden entitled, ‘The Across Boundaries’ Social Farming garden and thus winning a coveted Gold Medal.

The garden had a completely rural theme. Many items in the garden were sourced locally.  It consisted of a pool surrounded by rushes and pasture land with wild flowers. In the background he had the side of a shed with the wheel of a hay rake lying against it. A path ran through the garden with old style gates.  It was surrounded by a dry stone wall dappled with moss.  It was a well-deserved reward for all the work that went into it. After being displayed at Bloom, the garden will be integrated into an existing social farm.

On Sunday, the other garden designers voted for Barry as their favourite designer at Bloom this year and on Monday, Barry won the ‘People’s Choice’ award at Bloom 2016. Well done Barry on this marvellous achievement.

Barry would like to especially thank Eilish McGowan, Dessie Harrington and Bill West for their commitment to the project and to all the other volunteers who helped make it happen.

Another local exhibit, ‘Organic Chickens’, was from the farm of Kenneth and Shirley Hall, Drumeague. Shirley was dishing them out to customers at a fast rate!! With the now more health conscious public, they will be in great demand!!

Important Message from St. Anne’s National School:

St. Annes NS held its annual Silver Circle Draw before Easter this year. We have had several reports last week from local people who have been approached to support the school and buy lines on a Silver Circle card, despite the fact that the draws have already taken place in March 2016. This is not an authorised card and St. Annes NS is not involved in the selling of these lines. We would ask that you do not give any money to these people. This has been reported to the Gardai. Please be vigilant and notify the school or the Gardai if you are approached to buy a line on a card. Thank you.

Inter county news; Celtic Challenge; The lads followed up the win over Longford with another impressive win over Leitrim on Wednesday last. Having been defeated in the opening round to the strongest team in the group, Sligo, they went on to win 3 of the next 4 fixtures with the late late defeat to Monaghan the only blemish in what was a fine performance in this new competition. Advancing to play a Galway City/ West side, on Saturday last in Mullingar, was always going to prove difficult but the lads gave their all and can be very happy with their collective and individual performances in the competition. Three East Cavan Gaels men of the six we supplied to the squad received man of the match performances and is testament to their continuing hard work. Well done to all involved, Jack Barry, Cian McEntee, Rory Farrell, Kyle McGuinness, Philip Rogers and Stephen O’Reilly and to our own Kathryn O’Flynn who was a selector for this squad.
