Bailieborough Tidy Towns:

A big ‘Thank You’ to all who came on Spring Clean day, 63 bags of rubbish were collected. Great work and great to see community spirit in action.

Every Tuesday  at 7 pm, the clean-up continues, meet around Main Street each week.
Reduce waste and keep Cavan tidy by investing in a reusable blue coffee cup with Cavan logo. Ideal for coffee lovers and Cavan fans. This cup is for sale in Daybreak on Barrack Street and is also available in Bailie Stores. All proceeds go towards the local Tidy Towns.

 

1916—Lecture:

‘The 1916 Rising – An Oral Legacy’ a lecture by Maurice O’Keeffe of ‘Irish Life and Lore’ at the Library on this Thursday evening, May 10th at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to this FREE event and refreshments will be served! Enquiries to 042 9665779.

‘An Essence of Presence’ a photographic exhibition by Suella Holland, depicting Forsaken Ireland, now open at the Library until the end of May. All welcome.

 

May is Mary’s Month:

The Rosary will be recited at the Grotto on the Virginia Road every evening during the month of May at 7.30pm. No Rosary on Saturdays. Everyone welcome to offer prayer for the sick of our Parish as well as any private intention.

 

Bailieborough Community Alert is hosting a Public Meeting regarding the possible installation of CCTV around our town and on all approach roads to the town. This meeting will take place on Monday, May 21st at 8.00pm, in the Hotel Bailie. The installation of these cameras will be vital in assisting with policing in our community and protecting residents and their property. Your attendance will be warmly welcomed. Fundraiser:

Fundraiser night of music and craic to raise funds for Bailieborough Powerlifter, Gar Walsh, who is attempting to compete in two European and two World Championships in 2018. Competitions are in England, Dublin, Scotland and Malta. He is currently National Champion in all three events and World deadlift champion in his category. He is also a musician and is releasing a single for this event. The event is taking place in the Hide-Out, The Vale on Saturday, May 19th at 9.00pm. Raffle on the night. All welcome.

Social Dancing:

Social Dancing this month is on Saturday next, 12th May in the Community Centre. Music on the night will be supplied by J. and S. Sound, who are noted for their mellow sounds. Dancing is from 10.30pm till 12.30am with supper served while the music is flowing. All welcome.

 

CHARITY WALK / RUN:

In memory of Ann Clerkin, Curkish, will take place in Bailieborough on Saturday 26th May, commencing at 11.00 am from BDA offices, Shercock Road, Bailieborough. Funds raised will be donated to Bailieborough Cancer Comfort Fund, Drumlin House Cootehill and MS Ireland (The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland) Cavan Branch. Donations voluntary on the day and all are most welcome.

Deepest Sympathy:

Deepest Sympathy is extended to sons, Patrick and Brian, daughters, Honora and Angie, daughter-in-law Bernie, grandchildren Caoimhe, Cian, Sadhbh, Oisin, Ava, Zoe, sister Kay, brothers Christie and Sean, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends on the death of Roisin Campbell (nee Gregory) wife of the late Orial, Lakeview, Drumbannon, Bailieborough, who passed away peacefully on Monday, April 23rd surrounded by her loving family at Cavan General Hospital. Roisin’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Annes Church on Thursday morning, April 26th and afterwards, her remains were laid to rest in St. Anne’s Cemetery.

Bailieborough Model School—Parents Association:

The Model School Parents Association’s ‘MEGA DRAW LAUNCH NIGHT’ takes place on Friday evening, 11th May 2018 at the Model School from 7-8pm.

Refreshments will be served. We look forward to seeing Parents, teachers and the community on this very special evening.

This is more than a Mega draw, it is an exponential fundraiser and a unique fundraising event which benefits everyone.

There has already been a huge response to this Mega Draw and a demand for tickets. So come along and join us as tickets will be sold on a first come first served basis.

There is a mini draw that evening for one lucky ticket holder who purchases one of the tickets. A prize which will light up any home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tickets are €50 each. But they are valid for all draws from July 2018 to December 2018. Over €5000 worth of prizes. Sold on a first come first served basis and open to the whole community of Bailieborough.

 

Hardtimes Chorus:

Well done to the members of the Hardtimes Chorus who have been nominated for a Cavan County Council, Cathaoirleach’s Award which will take place in Cavan on Friday 18th May. Hopefully the group will receive the recognition they deserve for all the funds they have raised for local charities over the years.

The newest addition to the Festival this year, will be Food Tents for all you foodies out there! We are calling all local food merchants, handmade artisans, local food vendors, food trucks to join us in displaying your delicious wares, sell, sample and showcase your unique products. Demonstrations are a welcome way to engage with everyone and to help people recognise the need for wonderful local producers. This event will be held on Sunday July 22nd on the Main St. in the middle of all the hustle and bustle providing valuable exposure for you to showcase your products.

The Bailieborough Historical Society is planning an exhibition of artefacts manufactured in and related to Bailieborough’s industrial past. This will take place during Heritage Week in August. Cavan Walking Festival:

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 7th May 2018

Under 7/9/11;

A great start for our U7/9/11s training in Killann last week. This week’s training on Monday a little earlier due to the Bank Holiday 5.15-6.30 in Killann.

The U13s continue the Monaghan league with an away trip to Castleblayney on Monday 7th.

Under 15;

Our U15s put in a great shift v Lisbellaw in Kingscourt on Monday last. 4-08 to 3-04 defeat. Only a last minute goal by the visitors pulled them away in the end but our squad performed very well against a top side at this level. Well done lads and management of Kathryn and Pat.

Mr. James (Jimmy) Gilsenan.

All within the local community and much further afield were very deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mr. James (Jimmy) Gilsenan, 30 Woodview, Bailieborough. Jimmy—as everyone knew him by—passed away peacefully at Cavan General Hospital on Saturday, April 7th, following a short illness.

Aged 79, Jimmy was born in Annaclue, Bailieborough and was the second son of the late Tom and Maggie Gilsenan. In his younger years, Jimmy attended Ballinamoney N.S. and when he had finished National School, he became an apprentice mechanic with Gibson’s Garage, Adelaide Road. During his teens, Jimmy also drove a lorry for Bailieborough Creamery, drawing milk to the Creamery. In 1960, Jimmy and his future wife Betty, moved to England and he worked as a maintenance man on the London Transport Railway Line. He also drove coaches for the Green Line Coach Company and later on Jimmy was a maintenance fitter for the Corcoran and Conners Company in London. Jimmy and his family returned to Bailieborough in 1979 and in 1980, he commenced work as a fitter in Wellman International Ltd., Mullagh, where he worked until he retired in 1993.

Jimmy had met his wife Betty, when he was drawing milk to the Creamery and they got married in 1962. They lived in Essex and had five children together. Jimmy and Betty lived for their family and they were happiest when their children and grandchildren, came a visiting.

In his spare time, Jimmy had many interests, he was a member of the local Fianna Fail Cumann for over 25 years, he could turn his hands to anything and many were the times when he would help out his many friends and neighbours in their hour of need, he loved doing crosswords and puzzles and he also took great pride in the husbandry of his pool of outdoor goldfish.

In the late 1990’s a group of local people used to go down to the then St. Felim’s Nursing Home in Cavan Town and put on a show every St. Stephen’s Day for the residents there. To raise funds for this and other local charities the group used to put on a show in the Community Centre in Bailieborough around Christmas. The centrepiece of these shows were the comedy acts and Jimmy was one of the stars of these shows, bringing the house down with his hilarious and usually unscripted (or script ignored) antics and “mouthfulls”.

A friendly, kind, family orientated and helpful man, Jimmy will be sadly missed, not only by his family but also by the whole local community and all who had the great pleasure of knowing him.

Jimmy is survived by his wife, Betty, sons: Tommy (Maple Court) and Martin (Woodview), his daughters: Kathleen (Drumkeery), Annie (Dundragon) and Maggie (Woodview), son’s in-law, Kieran and Brendan, daughter’s in-law, Mary and Yvonne, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to whom deepest sympathy is extended.

Jimmy is also survived by his brothers: John (Tierworker), Oliver (England), Raymond (Bailieborough), Alfie (Kingscourt), Dessie (Mayo) Tony (Australia) and sister Kathleen (England), sister’s in-law, brother in-law, nieces, nephews and extended family members.

There was a huge attendance at Clarke’s Funeral Home on Monday evening, April 9th and afterwards, Jimmy’s remains were removed to St. Anne’s Chapel, where the local Fianna Fail Cumann provided a Guard of Honour. Jimmy’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Anne’s on Tuesday morning, April 10th –at which Fr. Michael Router P.P. and Fr. John Cooney officiated—and following which, Jimmy’s remains were laid to rest in Moybologue New Cemetery.

Distance covered will be 5k and participants are asked to meet at the Bailieborough Business Centre, Shercock Road at 11.00am.

The second Walk will be at Dun A Ri, Forest Park, Kingscourt on Tuesday, May 8th at 7.00pm. Please meet at Cabra Central School at 6.45pm and the distance of the Walk is also 5k.

New dawn, new central facility; Killann the new Home of Hurling for East Cavan Gaels!!

After last week’s older lads, it is now time for all our younger age groups to take to the field in Killann. Monday 6.45-8pm for all U7/9/11. New players are especially welcome.

First training in Killan Monday 6.45-8pm.

Under 13;

 

Great work by our 13s as they won their 3 games v Warrenpoint, Clontibret and Woodford Gaels in the grading blitz in Cloghan on Saturday last. We now await the fixtures for the league proper.

Under 15; Next round of U15 league is V Lisbellaw on Monday at 7.15. Venue tbc.

Under 17; Cavan Celtic begins next week for lads on county squad. New Monaghan league for U17 begins next Monday with a game away to Carrickmacross.

Bailieborough Tidy Towns:

The Annual ‘Spring Clean’ will take place in the town on Saturday next, April 28th 2018. Please meet at Market Square at 11 am.
Bring a litter picker and wear a high viz jacket. Children under twelve must be accompanied by an adult. Join us and help keep out town tidy.

Cavan Walking Festival:

As part of the Cavan Walking Festival, the Bailieborough Walking group will be hosting three walks. The first of these will take place on Saturday, May 5th around Bailieborough Forest. Distance covered will be 5k and participants are asked to meet at the Bailieborough Business Centre, Shercock Road at 11.00am.

The second Walk will be at Dun A Ri, Forest Park, Kingscourt on Tuesday, May 8th at 7.00pm. Please meet at Cabra Central School at 6.45pm and the distance of the Walk is also 5k.

The final walk will take place on Thursday, May 10th at Lough An Leagh.  Please meet at the Picnic Area at 6.45 pm. The Walk distance will be 10k and all are most welcome to attend.

Killann Parish Pilgrimage to the World Meeting of Families:

This year’s Killann Parish Pilgrimage will be to the World Meeting of Families in the RDS, Ballsbridge, Dublin on Thursday, August 23rd. A bus will be travelling to the RDS from Bailieborough and further details will be announced later. If, however you would like to book a place on the bus, please contact the Parish Office on Mondays and Thursdays from 10am to 3.30pm, Tuesdays from 12pm to 1.30pm and Fridays from 2pm to 6pm. Everyone going that day will also have to register online at www.worldmeeting2018.ie and buy a ticket online for the event. Adults-€38: Senior Citizens/Unemployed/Students over 18-€33; Children-Free –but must be registered with a family group. If you have difficulty doing this, please tell the Parish secretary and they will provide you with assistance. At present, tickets for the Papal Mass in the Phoenix Park on August 26th are dependent on registering for the World Meeting of Families during the previous week. Under 7/9/11; Under 9 blitz in Carrick next Sunday 11-12.30pm. Really good numbers at our new age grade training for Under 9s and U11s.

Fridays U9/11 training group in Bailieborough.

Under 13; A good win for the lads v Cootehill on Monday last in Kingscourt. Next up is the grading blitz for the new Tain Ulster GAA Under 13 competition in Cloghan next Saturday.

Feile U14; The lads will represent Cavan hurling at National Feile again this year. We will be based in the scenic area of Rosses Point in Sligo with host club Benbulben Gaels Hurling.

Our 2018 Feile squad (minus a couple of injured players) who will head to Sligo in June.

Under 17; Cavan Celtic begins in early May for lads on county squad. New Monaghan league for U17 begins in early May with a game away to Carrickmacross.

Bailieborough Heritage Society are delighted that one of our events which took place during Heritage Week 2017 has been shortlisted for the Heritage Awards in the category ‘Heritage Communities’. The awards ceremony takes place in the Heritage Council Kilkenny on April 12th. The shortlisted event is the’ Benny Duffy Photographic’ display organised by Carmel O’Callaghan, we wish Carmel well as she travels to Kilkenny on Thursday for the awards ceremony. It is well deserved recognition of Carmel’s work in putting the exhibition together and of Benny Duffy’s interest in capturing images from the past.

The Niamh Crosby Memorial Bike Run:

The Niamh Crosby Memorial Bike Run Committee would like to thank you all for your support and help at the Run on Easter Sunday last. Nearly 100 bikes of all shapes, makes and sizes took part in this very successful event. To date, in excess of €6,000 has been raised from the event and this would not have been possible without your generous support. Killann Parish Pilgrimage to the World Meeting of Families:

This year’s Killann Parish Pilgrimage will be to the World Meeting of Families in the RDS, Ballsbridge, Dublin on Thursday, August 23rd. Other parishes from the Diocese will be travelling to the event along with Bishop Leo O’Reilly on that day. A bus will be travelling to the RDS from Bailieborough and further details will be announced later. If, however you would like to book a place on the bus, please contact the Parish Office on Mondays and Thursdays from 10am to 3.30pm, Tuesdays from 12pm to 1.30pm and Fridays from 2pm to 6pm. Everyone going that day will also have to register online at www.worldmeeting2018.ie. If you have difficulty doing this, please tell the Parish secretary and they will provide you with assistance. At present, tickets for the Papal Mass in the Phoenix Park on August 26th are dependent on registering for the World Meeting of Families during the previous week. It is hoped to organise a bus from Bailieborough on that day too.

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 9th April 2018

Presentation night; Thanks to everyone who attended our presentation event in the Bailie Hotel on Sunday last with special thanks to Cavan County Board Chairman, Gerry Brady who presented medals and certificates to all of our players. Pics in next week’s news and Facebook during the week.

New training venue; We are delighted to announce that we have secured the community field in Killann for our training and some matches for most of our teams from U11 upwards. This new facility will give our lads the chance to train together in a neutral venue close to Shercock. We look forward to using it. We still use Kingscourt Stars facility for matches and we are thankful to them for their continued support but this new facility will take the pressure off their main pitch which is very busy.

Under 7/9/11;

Training will remain indoors this week until the ground dries up better, so Thursday in Kingscourt and Friday in Bailieborough. We have a blitz in Carrick close to the end of the month.

Under 13; First league game of the season on Monday v Cootehill in Kingscourt at 6.45. Meeting there at 6.30 sharp.

Under 15; Defeat to Cootehill in the first round of the league last week got the new season up and running. The second round has us at home in Kingscourt to face Monaghan Harps at 6.30 on Monday next 16th April.

Under 17; Cavan Celtic begins in early May for lads on county squad. New Monaghan league for U17 begins in early May with a game away to Carrickmacross.

Holy Week Ceremonies:

Thank you to all those who assisted in preparing and celebrating the Holy Week and Easter liturgies in St. Annes, Bailieborough especially, the Parish Pastoral Council and Liturgy Group, the sacristan May Cassidy and caretaker Sadie Clarke, the Choirs and their directors: Thomas Hanley, Sean O’Reilly and Derek Eakins, the musicians, the Ministers of the Word, the Ministers of the Eucharist, the gift bearers, the Altar servers, the First Communion Parent’s Committee and the parents and children of the First Communion Classes who participated on Holy Thursday and the students from 5th year in Bailieborough Community School, who took part in the Good Friday Services.

A special word of thanks to Marie Guckian, Geraldine Reilly, Brigid Donohoe, Ciaran Purcell, Julie Smith and Sean O’Reilly who gave their time to prepare the Church, to Rose Fitzpatrick and Sheila Clarke who organised the various Ministers, to Thomas Small, who is on Pastoral Placement in the Parish at present, to Andrea Connolly, Pastoral Assistant, to those who attended the Services in such large numbers and to all who helped out in any way over Easter Week.

 

Moybologue Historical Society Talk:

‘From the Bronze Age to the Middle-Age – what can we say about 3 sites in the Moybologue area so far?’; a talk by well-known Archaeological Geophysicist Kevin Barton of Landscape and Geophysical Services (www.lgs.ie) and members of Moybologue Historical Society, on the results of the geophysical and grave-marker surveys during 2017, ongoing research, future plans and an update on the Conservation and Management Plan for Moybologue old graveyard.

The talk will take place at 8pm on Friday 6th April in St. Mary’s Hall, Tierworker.

The Annual ‘Spring Clean’ will take place in the town on Saturday, April 28th 2018. Further details closer to the event.

There will be scaffolding in front of ‘Vincent’s Shop’, Main St., for the next 6 to 8 weeks, for work to the apartments upstairs. We will hold our AGM in the Hotel Kilmore on Thursday 26th April at 8.30 p.m. We would love to see some new faces (as well as the old familiar ones!) this year. Under 6/8/10; Our lads now enjoying the Easter break. We will now start to organise some games locally. Thanks to all who registered so far. It will continue until all are registered. You must be registered to be insured to play hurling.

Under 13; Outdoor training will return on Monday 9th April in Kingscourt 7-8pm with u13 leagues to start soon.

Under 15; New Monaghan league begins on bank Holiday Monday with a trip to our local Cavan rivals Cootehill Celtic.

Opening of Bailieborough Shamrocks New Astro Turf Pitch and Club Rooms:

On Saturday evening last, the Bailieborough Shamrocks celebrated the Official Opening of their Astro Turf Facility and Dressing Rooms. The GAA’s outgoing President and Cavan Native Aogán Ó Fearghaíl officially opened the brand new facilities. Fr. Michael Router P.P., Councillor Paddy McDonald, Cathaoirleach, Cavan County Council and Chairperson of Bailieborough Shamrocks, Senator Joe O’Reilly and local T.D., Niamh Smyth along with a large crowd of local well-wishers and club members were in attendance at this momentous event. The Club wishes to thank everyone who attended and to thank all their Sponsors, players, supporters, mentors and Club members, without whose support this would not have been possible.

Holy Thursday, March 29th —Chrism Mass in the Cathedral of St. Patrick and St. Felim, Cavan at 11.30am. Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7.00pm in St. Annes.

Good Friday, March 30th: Celebration of the Lord’s Passion at 3.00pm. Prayer around the Cross at 8.00pm.

Easter Vigil: Holy Saturday at 9.00pm. Confessions will also take place in St. Anne’s on Holy Saturday from 12 noon to 3.00pm.

Honda Motorcycle RUN:

This Run is in aid of raising funds for ‘The Family Comfort Room’ in St. James’s Hospital, Dublin and is in memory of the late, Niamh Crosby, Curkish, Bailieborough. The Run will take place on Sunday next, the 1st of April. Registration will take place from 10.00am to 12 noon, with a 12.15pm start at Enagh House (located approx. 2kms from Virginia on the Virginia—Bailieborough Road). The run distance is 55miles and the entry fee is €20. All bikes are welcome and light refreshments will be served before and after.

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 26th March 2018

Monday hurling; U11/13/15/17. Most hurling fixtures for 2018, be that Ulster GAA, Monaghan and Cavan GAA will be scheduled for Mondays. Nine counties are beginning to use Monday as their hurling fixtures day this year which is a big step forward for hurling development. We expect all our players ages from U11 upwards to be available to us going forward. There will be no gaelic football fixtures on Monday, as like last year, so we hope many more Gaels who have not had the opportunity to play hurling will now take this chance as there should be no reason not to as Monday will be free from other GAA activity. ‘Nobody’s Talking To Me’:

The Latin School Players wish to present their play “Nobody’s Talking To Me” by Tommy Marren in the Latin School, Moyne Community Centre on  Friday 6th April, Saturday 7th April and Sunday 8th April. Tickets can be purchased in Moyne Cross Stores, Corrigans, Lynches of Arva and McSeains of Cornafean.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade:

On Saturday afternoon last, the 17th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade took place in the town. On a bitterly cold afternoon, with bits of snow falling, a smaller than usual crowd was present on Main Street to watch the Parade.  Although the Parade was smaller than other years, it proved to be an enjoyable event for young and old.  Mr. P.J. Barry—MC for the event—kept the attendance amused and informed about the various participants in the Parade. Two marching bands took part in the parade—the Corduff Pipe Band and St. Mary’s Brass and Reed Band, Kingscourt. Local sporting clubs, organisations and charities were well represented with some organisations making a very welcome return to the parade.

The Prize-winners on the day (which were independently judged) were, Best Float—Kingscourt Play Centre, Best Comedy Award went to ‘East Cavan Gaels Hurling Club’, the Best Dressed Shop Window went to ‘La Mirage’, Main Street and this year’s new award for Best Club and a prize of €500 went to Tierworker Irish Dancing Club.

THANK YOU to all the volunteers, entrepreneurs, voluntary and community groups, local businesses and anyone who helped out in this year’s Parade, without your help and enthusiasm, there would be no Parade! and despite the Artic weather and other events taking place, you all made it a very enjoyable event.

Bailieborough Shamrocks G.F.C.: Official Opening of Astro Turf Pitch and Dressing Rooms.

Bailieborough Shamrocks Gaa Club will be officially opening their new Astro Turf Pitch and Dressing Rooms on Saturday next, March 24th at 8pm. They are delighted to announce that the Guest of Honour will be the outing President of the GAA and Cavan native Mr Aogán Ó Fearghail. This will be a wonderful Day for the Club and they appeal to all Club Players, Supporters, Members and the Wider Community to come out on the night to join them on this momentous occasion.

 

Knockbride Variety Show:

Knockbride Variety Show are hosting their 10th Annual Variety Show on Thursday 22nd, Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th of March. The show is on in Tunnyduff Hall in Knockbride, it’s pay at the door, adults are €10 and children under 12 is €5.
Doors open each night at 8pm and the show will commence at 8.30pm sharp. A fun filled night of Comedy, Song, Music and Dance and as this is our 10th year, a great night’s entertainment is guaranteed. All welcome.

 

Honda Motorcycle RUN:

Due to the treacherous road conditions on Sunday last, the decision was taken to cancel the Honda Run. This Run is in aid of raising funds for ‘The Family Comfort Room’ in St. James’s Hospital, Dublin and is in memory of the late, Niamh Crosby, Curkish, Bailieborough. The Run has now been rescheduled for Sunday the 1st of April. Registration will take place from 10.00am to 12 noon, with a 12.15pm start at Enagh House (located approx. 2kms from Virginia on the Virginia—Bailieborough Road). The run distance is 55miles and the entry fee is €20. All bikes are welcome and light refreshments will be served before and after.

The food from the cancelled run didn’t go to waste as the organisers donated the food to the ‘Soup Kitchen’ in Navan. So, well done lads.

Reconciliation Service for Easter:

A ‘Reconciliation Service for Easter’ will take place in St. Anne’s Church, Bailieborough on Sunday next, March 25th (Passion Sunday) at 7.00pm. Confessions will be heard by the Priests of the Pastoral Area as part of a Scripture Service. Confessions will also take place in St. Anne’s, Bailieborough on Holy Saturday, March 31st from 12 noon to 3.00pm.

  East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 19th March 2018:  

Saint Patrick’s Day Parades; What a great day! Despite the biting cold Donald Trump joined us and our hurling wall, with Mexicans on the other side, as we made our way firstly through the Kingscourt and then Bailieborough parades. Thanks to all who made the float, Brenden, Des, Kathryn, Tadhg and Miriam. A lot of hard work paid off with prizes won in both parades. Thanks to our Mexicans who would not be used to the cold and to older players Joseph, Daire, Aaron, Gary, Charlie and Michael and to all players and families who paraded with us. Thank you.

Monday Hurling; Most hurling fixtures for 2018, be that Ulster GAA, Monaghan and Cavan GAA will be scheduled for Mondays. Nine counties are beginning to use Monday as their hurling fixtures day this year which is a big step forward for hurling development. We expect all our players ages from U11 upwards to be available to us going forward. There will be no Gaelic football fixtures on Monday, as like last year, so we hope many more Gaels who have not had the opportunity to play hurling will now take this chance as there should be no reason not to as Monday will be free from other GAA activity. The dual GAA star is still out there, join us.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade:

The Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the town will take place on Saturday next, 17th March. The Parade will commence at 2.30pm. This year there will be €1,500 in prizes, prizes for best club, comedy, business, and window display. In an effort to invigorate the parade in our town, we are looking for more help and ideas from you all, we are proposing a special category for clubs in the area with a prize of €500 for best club float or pageant. We’d really appreciate all businesses big or small to put in a float (all entered free). Any ideas please get in touch with any committee member. Cavan and formerly 11 Hillside, Monaghan) who passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 4th, in the excellent care of the staff of Fairlawns Nursing Home, Bailieborough, in her 97th year. Monica’s Funeral Mass took place on Friday, March 9th in St. Anne’s Church, Bailieborough followed by burial in St. Anne’s Cemetery.

Moybologue Historical Society:

Dr. Gary Pennington, Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia in Canada is undertaking an ambitious research project called ‘Childhood Memories’. For several years they have been collecting stories from people around the world about their play experiences as children. The goal is to compile a broad database of information about children’s play that will be useful to people in many fields. Plans are to make the results of the study available in book form and on the internet. It is an ambitious effort to chronicle the play of youth over many generations and in different cultures.

While they have thousands of stories from people around the world, as yet they have very few from Ireland. To enhance their work, they would like to have many stories of childhood from the Emerald Isle, particularly from our seniors. They invite the Irish public to participate in the project. In addition to contributing to the study they believe that there are significant personal benefits to people who participate. They encourage respondents to make a copy of their completed form as part of a family history record. They have also found that once people have written their stories that small gatherings to share experiences are very rewarding.

Gary Pennington is from Canada with Mulligan Irish ancestors on his late mother’s side. One of his ancestors is buried in Moybologue Old Graveyard and he has attended several blessings of the graves ceremonies in recent years.

There is a huge range of toys for children to play with, while parents can enjoy a cup of tea and chat.

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 12th March 2018

Saint Patricks Day Parades; This year, for the very first time, we will partake in two parades, in Bailieborough, and for the first time, in Kingscourt. We hope as many of our young hurlers will participate, in one or both parades, especially our younger generation. The float is under construction in a secret location. All will be revealed on St. Patricks Day.

Confirmation; Confirmation season is with us again and we wish all our hurlers being confirmed and their families a great day.

Monday hurling; Most hurling fixtures for 2018, be that Ulster GAA, Monaghan and Cavan GAA will be scheduled for Mondays. Nine counties are beginning to use Monday as their hurling fixtures day this year which is a big step forward for hurling development. We expect all our players ages from U11 upwards to be available to us going forward. There will be no Gaelic football fixtures on Monday, as like last year, so we hope many more Gaels who have not had the opportunity to play hurling will now take this chance as there should be no reason not to as Monday will be free from other GAA activity. The dual GAA star is still out there, join us.

Under 6/8/10; Training indoors away from the elements continues in Kingscourt on Thursday and Bailieborough on Friday. Registration this Thursday 15th March in Kingscourt and Friday16th March in Bailieborough. €15 per player or €25 per family. We hope all our player families register with us.

Storm Emma and ‘The Beast from the East’:

During the past week, both of the aforementioned events had an effect on the people living in the town and surrounding areas. From Tuesday of last week, biting cold temperatures were the norm and local shops and supermarkets were quickly sold out of basic foodstuffs. Snow fell on Tuesday night and continued to fall over the next few days with varying degrees of intensity. The local County Council crews were out gritting and salting the main roads around the town which helped traffic to keep moving. The worst of the snow fell on Thursday and Friday and most people heeded the warnings to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Some shops were open for a few hours on Friday afternoon but most stayed closed along with all the local schools. By Saturday morning, Main St. was passable, mainly due to the hard work of the council crews, shop owners and employees and the help of the local farming community and machinery operators who used their machinery to clear the main roads around the town. Most businesses were open for trade and by late Saturday evening, most people were able to replenish their larders with stocks of fresh food. On Sunday, a slight thaw set in but some religious services were cancelled or postponed due to the weather—most notably the Confirmation of local schoolchildren due to be held in St. Annes and which is rescheduled for Sunday next. Most other social events were either cancelled or deferred to a later date along with most sporting activities. At the time of writing (Monday morning), all the main roads are clear into the town and the thaw has well and truly set in, but there still remains a lot of snow on outlying roads and lanes which will take some time to remove.

So, hopefully, the worst storm over the past few years has now gone and life will be able to get back to normal for all the people of Bailieborough and its hinterland.

 

Confirmation:

Unfortunately, due to health and safety concerns Confirmation was postponed in Bailieborough on Sunday last. Because of the ongoing adverse weather conditions, the poor and impassable state of roads in many parts of the parish and the icy conditions around the church carpark/avenues Fr. Router had no option but to make this decision.

Confirmation is rescheduled for next weekend on Sunday, March 11th, at 3pm. Bishop Leo will not be able to attend as he has a full schedule of confirmations in other parishes until the end of May. Monsignor Liam Kelly, Vicar General of Kilmore Diocese, has agreed to administer confirmation.

Following the cancellation on Friday last, March 2nd, Knockbride Bazaar will now take place in Tunnyduff hall on Friday, 9th March at 9 p.m. Great selection of prizes and everyone welcome.

 

Women’s World Day of Prayer:

The annual Women’s World Day of Prayer Service will this year be held in Trinity Church, Virginia Road on Friday, March 9th at 8.00pm (re-arranged due to the bad weather last Friday). The Special Speaker will be Barbara Geddes from Killinkere. Please make a special effort to attend and share in worship with all the Churches in the area. Please also remember men are very welcome!!

Deepest Sympathy:

Deepest Sympathy is extended to the nephews, nieces, sisters-in-law, relatives and friends of Tommie Carolan, Corravilla and late Tunnyduff, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan, who passed away on Thursday, February 22nd, in his 99th year, peacefully at the Sacred Heart Nursing Home, Clones. Tommie’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Bridgid’s Church, Knockbride West on Saturday, February 24th with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

 

The Open Door Sessions:

This month’s ‘Open Door Sessions’ will take place on Friday, March 16th, Downstairs at Nixy’s, The Square Bar, commencing at 9.00pm. This month’s arts and music gathering features comedian/poet Dave Hynes, Dublin indie-folk band Pine the Pilcrow and traditional musician Sharon Argue. We’re sure to be in for a great night’s entertainment. All welcome.

 

Free Computer Classes:

Great interest in this course so dates have been decided – there will be 5 sessions beginning on Thursday March, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th April 5th from 2pm-4pm here in the library. ‘Honda Run’:

A motorcycle run will take place on Sunday, March 18th in aid of raising funds for ‘The Family Comfort Room’ in St. James’s Hospital, Dublin. This run is in memory of the late, Niamh Crosby, Curkish, Bailieborough. Registration will take place from 10.00am to 12 noon, with a 12.15pm start at Enagh House (located approx. 2kms from Virginia on the Virginia—Bailieborough Road). The run distance is 55miles and the entry fee is €20. All bikes are welcome and light refreshments will be served before and after. The Bailieborough Historical Society is planning an exhibition of artefacts manufactured in and related to Bailieborough’s industrial past. This will take place during Heritage Week in August. St. Patrick’s Day Parade:

The Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the town will take place on Saturday, 17th March. The Parade will commence at 2.00pm. This year there will be €1,500 in prizes, prizes for best club, comedy, business, and window display. In an effort to invigorate the parade in our town, we are looking for more help and ideas from you all, we are proposing a special category for clubs in the area with a prize of €500 for best club float or pageant. We’d really appreciate all businesses big or small to put in a float (all entered free). Any ideas please get in touch with any committee member.  The Beast from the East didn’t stop the McGuigans from Stradone building their own hurler! Full back?

 Child protection; Thanks to all club members who recently completed their child protection course given in the Bailie Hotel by Cavan GAA. Along with Garda vetting and GAA coaching award it ensures all our coaches/mentors/managers have all the requirements to be involved in hurling for the year ahead.
