Planned Renovation of Bailieborough Courthouse

On last Monday week, January 23rd, Allen McAdam of M.C.A. Consulting gave a presentation on the proposed Renovation of Bailieborough Courthouse in the Bailieborough Business Centre. He outlined the progress of the project so far. Funding has been secured from Enterprise Ireland to conduct a Feasibility Study – which would involve enterprise only. Also secured is €100,000 from REDZ (Rural Economic Development Zone) for PHASE I Capital work and plans for further redevelopment of the Courthouse and Bridewell.  A lease is due to be signed shortly by the BDA with Cavan County Council for the Courthouse and Bridewell.

The feasibility study involves renovating the Courthouse in Bailieborough and restoring the old adjoining Bridewell Jail as a commercial, tourism and community resource and also investigating the potential to secure some funding from the Rural Development Programme (LEADER), PEACE IV.

The terms of reference of the project are: investigate the need for a centre of this nature in the greater Bailieborough Area, conduct a community needs analysis, consult with key local stakeholders, consult with any relevant statutory bodies, Assess insurance requirements and/or options, research and assess funding options, research and document needs and proposed usage patterns and recommend on-going maintenance options.

Allen then outlined a brief history of the Courthouse. It was erected in 1817, with the addition of the Bridewell Jail in 1833, for the use of the inhabitants of Co. Cavan. The jailer and his family lived on the first floor above the detention cells. The Bridewell and its history are unique. It was also used by the Courts Service and Cavan County Council until recent years and is currently in need of major refurbishment.

As part of the Community Consultation part of the project, an online survey was conducted by the B.D.A. over the past two months. 243 responses were received from all sections and ages of the local community. Over 75% of respondents were aware that funding has been secured to carry out initial works on the renovation and redevelopment of the former Courthouse and Bridewell in Bailieborough as an economic hub for the greater Bailieborough area. Over 98% of respondents wanted to see the property fully renovated and put to productive use.

The proposed schedule of works for the project is that it will be done in three phases: PHASE 1 Upstairs at front – Rentable office space/tourism information/staging posts for tours/Castle Lake – walks etc. PHASE 2 Multi-purpose community space- performance space, school of music etc. PHASE 3 Bridewell Museum and Visitor centre – Plantation town story, Bridewell and jail and people of note from Bailieborough.

The timescale for the proposed redevelopment is: Application lodged to PEACE IV in January 2017, in March 2017, EI Study Completed, in March/April 2017 – Architect appointed, December 2017 – PHASE 1 Completed, 2017/2018 – PHASE 2 and 3 – funding permitting.

For people who would like view the results of the feasibility study, it will be available to view on the Bailieborough Development Association’s facebook page and on the History page on Bailieborough.com

Illegal Dumping

There has been a noticeable increase in Illegal Dumping of rubbish in various places around the town in recent weeks and the Church property around St. Annes has not escaped the scourge! The skip that is located in St. Anne’s Cemetery to assist parishioners in the maintenance of family plots has been used to dump domestic rubbish and land between St. Annes N.S. and the Town Lake has been used as a dumping ground for several black bags filled with household waste. Hopefully those responsible will discontinue this practise as soon as possible. Dog owners who walk their dogs in the cemetery, and on the Church grounds, also around the Town Lake and the streets of the town are also asked to keep their pets on a lead and to ensure that they clean up after them!

Also on the same theme,  31 BAGS OF RUBBISH REMOVED FROM TOWN LAKE!

The Waste Management Department in Cavan County Council have confirmed that 31 bags of rubbish have been removed from the Town Lake in Bailieborough. This is absolutely disgraceful!! Bailieborough Town Lake is a beautiful amenity and has a lovely walkway for people and families to walk around. It is home to ducks and swans which could have been poisoned by this litter. There is a recycling centre in Bailieborough where it is very affordable to dispose of household rubbish and anything recyclable is free. Cavan County Council has been asked by our local T.D. and County Councillors to monitor this area regularly for litter.

Renovations to St. Anne’s Church

Murphy-Carolan have been appointed as the main contractor for the renovation work that will be carried out on St. Annes Church and Parish Centre over the coming months. Contracts were signed between the Church Area Finance Committee and the contractor on last Monday week. The work will be supervised by Niall Smith Architects, Kingscourt and will commence on Tuesday, February 7th.

The external work on the Sacristy extension will be the main focus of the project until Easter along with the alterations to the Parish Centre. After Easter—during April and May—the internal work in the Church will commence, involving the old Sacristy, toilets, electrical and mechanical fixes as well as the repairs to the roof. Repair work on the windows, alterations to the Sanctuary, Confessionals and Side Chapel will take place from Mid-May until the end of June. Repairs to the Bell Tower and Gallery will also take place during June and the floor work and main decoration will complete the work in July and August. Renovations and alterations to the Parish Centre will continue in conjunction with the work in the Church until they are finished in July. All works should be complete in the Church by the end of August.

As you can see from this schedule, there will be times when the use of the Church will be restricted between April and the end of August. Hopefully, these restrictions will be kept to a minimum but they may involve some closures on weekdays as the work progresses. The Church will not be closed at weekends.

Holy Hour: The monthly Holy Hour hosted by Direction for Our Times will take place on Thursday evening, February 2nd in St. Anne’s Church commencing at 8.00pm. All welcome.

Leanne Kiernan – Irish Times Sportswoman of the Month for December.

Congratulations to our own Leanne Kieran on receiving the Irish Times, Sportswoman of the Month Award for December. Having had an action packed 2016, this was a fitting end to the year for this up and coming sports star.

The year ahead will be an even busier one for Leanne with Shelbourne beginning the defence of their league title in March, the Women’s National League being played as a summer season for the first time, while there is also a Champions League campaign ahead after their 2016 success.

There’ll be plenty of international duty, too, between the U-19s and seniors. There’s also the small matter of the Leaving Cert which she will do this year, Leanne hoping to do a degree in Agricultural Science. Then there’s all the commuting between Cavan and Dublin for training and matches.

Longer term, Leanne has expressed the wish to play football professionally, following the path of several of her international colleagues playing in Britain and beyond, including Noelle Murray who has just left Shelbourne to sign for Glasgow City FC.

At 17, though, there’s time enough for those opportunities and choices to come along, and if she has another year like 2016, Leanne won’t be short of them.

The Open Door Sessions: A New Monthly Music and Arts Gathering for Bailieborough.

On Friday next, January 20th the second Open Door Sessions will take place in Fox’s pub Bailieborough. Following on from the very successful and entertaining inaugural night, a new round of musicians and arts professionals will play music and display and talk about their visual work.

Jimmy and Paddy will play music from the 70s through to the present day, providing a Hiberno-Americano acoustic experience, with a dash of humour and good fun.

The talented Liam McCabe is well known locally as a musician and has performed around Cavan and Ireland. This multi-instrumentalist and singer also plays in ‘Heroes in Hiding’, who recently appeared on The Late Late Show (and who will play in the Bailie Hotel, Bailieborough on the 21st of January).

Ireland Deserted is a Photographic Artist from Kells, Co Meath. Her work concentrates on abandoned buildings. Her images always seem to carry the essence of those who lived there. For the most part, they are serene, almost comforting, but each with their own unique character.

Robin James Hurt’s considerable talents as a guitarist, composer and singer have brought him on a rich and varied path as a solo act and with other artists, such as the late great Ronnie Drew of the Dubliners, Sinead O’Connor, Finbar Furey and many others.
As a guitarist he has gained international recognition for unique original compositions as well as fresh rearrangements of traditional material, filling them with love, yearning and raw emotion. As well as appearing on many albums by other acts over the years, Robin has an album and three EPs under his own name. His next album “The Magpie’s Nest” is a collaboration with the virtuoso young Dublin concertina player Ailbhe Nolan, to be released worldwide on 27th January 2017.

Admission is free, but donations will be appreciated!

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 9th January 2017

A very Happy New Year to all involved with our club. 2017 promises to be another positive year in the development of local hurling. We have a number of initiatives to roll out over the course of the year and by years end we should hope to see a substantial improvement at all levels within the club.

Just because there is no hurling being played at the moment does not mean there isn’t work going on. A full plan for the season ahead is being finalised and should be ready near the end of the month so to all our players we say enjoy the break as 2017 will be very busy and we hope successful.

Our first groups back hurling will be our U6/8/10 firstly in Kingscourt Community Centre on Thursday January 19th at 6.45 followed by our Bailieborough group on Friday 20th in the Community School Sports Hall from 6.

Registration for the year ahead for all will be in early February.

The older lads will return hurling soon after.

Happy New Year!

East Cavan Gaels Hurling Review 2016

Thank you to everyone who made 2016 another year of growth and consolidation with teams from U6 all the way up to minor. We hope to field our first ever adult side in 2017 to finally complete the work started in 2009 with Under 8/10. We look forward to seeing you all in 2017. Thanks to all our volunteers, our coaches and mentors who continue the difficult but enjoyable job of keeping the national game alive here in this part of county Cavan. Thanks also to those who sponsored our various initiatives throughout the year. Below is a selection of our work and players who played for us at all levels in 2016.

The future is bright #thefutureofhurlingisblue.

Christmas in Bailieborough

Attendance at all the religious services in the area were up on previous years with lots of people and their families returning home from abroad for the festive occasion. The Christmas spirit was in evidence—particularly on Christmas Eve—with the Annual Christmas Carol singing by the Bailieborough Cancer Fund on Main St.

Footfall in the local shops was up and in the run up to Christmas, trying to get parking on Main St., was a nightmare at times but shoppers made good use of the car parks in the town.

A big well done to everyone who took part in the Christmas Swim in Bailieborough. It was wild, wet and windy but it didn’t hold the locals back from the traditional Christmas Day swim which was being held for the 23rd time with the proceeds going to Bailieborough Senior Citizens. Hats off to the Special Abilities Tutors who took part despite the heavy rain. You are an amazing bunch of volunteers!

The Athletic Club’s Annual St. Stephen’s Day run was well supported with participants eager to clear the cobwebs after Christmas Day. The John Ed Sheanon inspired walk—in memory of P.J. Byrne— on Wednesday was also well attended and supported.

It was also a happy time for one local person/ family, who were the winners of the Christmas Eve Lotto jackpot worth over a cool €4,500,000. The winning ticket was sold in Lorraine Harris’s ‘Supervalu’ and at the time of writing, no one knows who has won it but as usual, there are plenty of rumours and potential candidates!! Anyway, well done whoever you are and good health and happiness to enjoy it!

THANK YOU  to all who decorated and prepared St. Annes Church for Advent and Christmas especially Sean Reilly, Olive Steenson, Eileen O’Reilly, Lucy Clarke, Marie Guckian, Geraldine Reilly, James Clarke, our caretaker Sadie Clarke, our sacristan May Cassidy and the members of the Community Employment Scheme. Thanks also to those took part in our liturgies, especially the First Communion and Confirmation classes from the local national schools, the students from Bailieborough Community School, the First Communion Parents Committee, the St. Anne’s National School Choir, the Eucharistic Ministers, Stewards and the Ministers of the Word.

Music is such an essential part of the liturgy and we are blessed to have two fine choirs here in Bailieborough Church Area – the St. Anne’s Choir directed and guided by Derek Eakins and the Folk Choir led by Thomas Hanley and Sean Reilly. We the people and priests of the parish really appreciate, and are thankful for, the work and effort of all involved.

Senior Help Line volunteers are trained older people who understand the ups and downs of life and are happy to listen, to keep company and to support. LoCall 1850 440 444—no calls cost more than 30 cents. All calls completely confidential.
