Bailieborough News. December 4th 2017. Matthew J. Cullen.

Bailieborough Christmas Lights:

There was great excitement amongst the many people gathered at the Market Square on Saturday evening last with the traditional ‘Switching –On’ of the Bailieborough Christmas Lights. Christmas Carols and music was provided by the Bailieborough School of Music and children from the local schools. Santa and his Elves arrived on his sleigh to the great amazement of all the young children present. One of the town’s most noted, sprightly and respected senior citizens, Mrs Rose Fulton, Cavan Road assisted Santa in turning on the lights and everything went to plan when all the dazzling lights lit up to give the town a very Christmassy feel. The children and their parents, then had the opportunity to visit Santa and his Elves in his Grotto.

This year’s lights are magnificent, with everyone commenting on how great they look! It would be well worth one’s while to come along to the town, just to see this terrific display.

The Christmas lights this year is a collective effort of people in our town and highlights the desire to revive it! The number of people who helped out is huge and they gave vast amounts of their time from assembling, erecting and electricians to wire them, and we can’t thank them enough! The Christmas tree was made by local men, Freddie Trotter and Nigel Williamson and the Crib was made by Pat Argue.
Christmas spirit and community spirit is alive and well in Bailieborough and we wish you all, a happy and peaceful Christmas!

Hardtimes Chorus:

The recent concert by the ‘Hardtimes Chorus’ raised €9,815. The money will go towards the renovations of St. Annes Church and the Parish Centre. Last week, the Chorus members, their director and manager, all those who attended the concert and all who gave donations were thanked for this wonderful night. This week it is time to acknowledge the great co-operation that was received from local businesses, particularly the Bailie Hotel, SuperValu, and Bailie Stores who sold the tickets, Clarke’s Hardware for the use of their lorry to move equipment and Daybreak for their sponsorship. Thanks also to Anne Ryan Costello who co-ordinated the ticket sales, the Bailieborough Church Area Finance Committee, the ticket sellers on the night and on the weekends leading up to the concert, the stewards in the carpark provided by Bailieborough Shamrocks G.F.C., those who prepared the church in advance and cleaned it afterwards, Kevin Gorman for his promotion work on Social Media and to Peter Murtagh—MC on the night, for making sure everything ran smoothly.

 32 County Honda Challenge:

So when the ‘easy’ bit of getting around the 32 counties on Hondas was over, the hard bit of collecting money and sponsorship was going on over the last few weeks. On Saturday night last, in Kangley’s—where the whole idea took shape and grew legs—the presentation of the cheque to Bumbleance took place. The Crew had hoped to raise €30,000 on their travels but when all was counted, they had raised an incredible amount of €46,113 for the Children’s Ambulance Service!  A truly great achievement and great thanks must go to the organisers, the riders, the drivers, the collectors, the sponsors, families, friends and the communities who all gave so generously to such a worthy cause.

32 County Honda Challenge:

On Thursday morning, October 26th, 30 riders on Honda 50’s/70’s/90’s and one Honda 90 trike left Bailieborough to take part in the 32 Counties Honda Challenge—which was to travel through the 32 counties on the island and in doing so to raise funds for ‘Bumbleance’ (The National Children’s Ambulance Service). It is hoped that the funds raised on this epic journey will go towards the purchase of a dedicated Children’s Ambulance for the North Eastern Region. The riders that took part were: Dwayne Lyng, Paddy Rodgers, Gary Gargan, Aidan Cunningham, Conor O’Reilly, Pauric Garvey, John Sheenan, Niall Mulligan (Mohill, Leitrim), Peter Crosby, John McDonald, Gordon Hall, Gary Soden, Brendan Morgan (Wexford), Gerry Martin, Brendan Byrne, Ronan Higgins, Damien Carroll, Paddy Smyth, Darren Gray, Shane Fox, Michael Smith, Paudie O’Reilly, Christopher Denning, Eoghan Smith, Eugene Clarke, Barry Connelly, Tom Heffernan, Matthew Donoghue, Paddy McGuinness and Tommy Martin. All the patrons and staff of ‘Kangley’s’, all who donated and anyone else who helped out in any way.

In their epic five-day journey the lads received terrific encouragement everywhere they passed through with people coming out and cheering them on. The weather was mostly kind to them and remarkably there were very few mechanical issues with their machinery. On Bank Holiday Monday, October 30th, hundreds of people lined Main St, to welcome the lads home. They were joined on the last few legs of the journey by other Honda 50 riders and there were nearly 80 bikes in the cavalcade that entered the town close to 4.00pm, creating a colourful, cheery and noisy spectacle, which is seldom seen nowadays. Local T.D Niamh Smyth welcomed the lads home and event organiser and participant, Gary Gargan also thanked all who had helped in organising and making the event such a success.  The Funds raised from the event will be presented in due course and the question that everybody was asking on Monday evening was, ‘How are we going to surpass that next year’????

Bailieborough News. September 25th 2017. Matthew J. Cullen.

Bailieborough Shamrocks: ‘Lip Sync’ Fundraiser -All Weather Pitch Project.

As you all may know now, we are running a Major Club Fundraiser ‘Lip Sync’ Battles on Saturday 7th October in Killinkere Leisure Centre. This fundraiser is vital for our Club as we will be starting to construct a 60M x 25M All Weather Pitch this week. In the next couple of days you will see the machines move in and construction begin. The Training pitch will be realigned also and there will be extensive work done on our Entrance from the Shercock Road with new fencing etc. This is an ambitious project and we will need as much support as possible from our members and the wider community. If anyone would like to advertise with us for our Fundraiser or by placing their business sign on our Main Pitch or on the Astro Pitch please contact any executive member. For non-business people, we would appreciate if you would buy a ticket or 2 for the show. It will be an amazing night and you won’t be disappointed with what you will witness. Again this facility will help us cater for our growing playing numbers and it will also be available to the wider community, schools, local groups / organisations etc. We as a club always get great support from the Community and we greatly appreciate all everyone has done for us over the years. In 8 week’s time, we will have our Main Playing field a 117M x 80M training field and our All Weather Pitch. Bailieborough Shamrocks GAA Club will be well equipped after this to cater for our ever expanding membership. Our Facilities will be as good as any in the County bar none.

Lip Sync Launch Night.

Last Friday night we had a great turnout for our Launch Night for our Major Fundraiser Lip Sync Battles in Nixys Square Bar. We have 13 Acts taking part in the show and 10 were in attendance on the night. Our thanks to everyone who turned up and especially to our Acts who are the most important people in this show, as without them we wouldn’t have a show. The amount of effort they are putting in is amazing and we as a Club cannot thank them enough. From the bottom of our hearts Thank you all so much. To Paddy Sheanon our MC and Ian McCabe the Anglo Celt photographer we appreciate ye rushing back from Breffni Park to help with our Launch Night. And to our Club Members, supporters and the Wider Community we would appeal to everyone to get their tickets quickly as they are selling fast. We expect a crowd of 1,000 to be in our venue in Killinkere Leisure Centre on Saturday 7th October 2017. All our Acts have tickets as well as all Club teams managers and selectors and anyone who is looking for tickets can contact Gavin the PRO on 086 7956796. Looking forward to seeing you all on the night, its going to be an amazing show.

New and existing players, from the entire region, very welcome. These are very good sessions free from the sometimes difficult elements working on key hurling skills with a lot of fun also.

We hope fixtures, both locally and in Ulster, can be streamlined more effectively in 2018 to give Gaels the opportunity to play both codes of which very many wish to do but cannot.
