Darkness into Light, Bailieborough:Not long to go now before this year’s ‘Darkness into Light’ Bailieborough event. The event will commence from the Community Centre, Chapel Road at 4.15am on Saturday morning next, May 7th. The route of the walk/run is the same as last time out in 2019 and we are asking that businesses in the town and households along the route get involved by decorating their shop windows in yellow for the week leading up to the event and that households light a candle in a window on the day. Thank you to all taking part in this years event.

Next Saturday we will be providing refreshments after the event in the Community Centre. We are asking any keen bakers to support the event and donate something. Anything being donated can be left in The Lemon Tree on Barrack Street on Friday evening (6th May) between 5 and 9pm. Anyone still wishing to register can do so at www.darknessintolight.ie You wont receive your T-shirt in time for next Saturday but we will have some on the morning for those wishing to show their support.

Nomad Cafe: This year we are supporting Darkness Into Light and @pieta.house. This is such a worthy cause and one close to both our hearts. We will be organising a closed bucket collection from the 6th until the 8th of May and will be on hand on the morning of the Bailieborough walk to provide a complimentary tea or coffee to all the participants and volunteers.  

Bailieborough Walking Group: Our first walk of the season starts on Wednesday 4th  May. Commencing at the Picnic Area of Lough an Leagh at 7.15pm. This will be a moderate walk approx 1.5 hrs. 5-7km. All welcome.

May—Month of the Holy Rosary: The Rosary will be recited at the Grotto on the Virginia Road for the month of May, at 7.30pm. No Rosary on Saturdays. Please come and join in prayers for peace in the World, especially in the Ukraine, for all the sick, for vocations and your own intentions. Everyone welcome.

As part of Cavan Library’s Bealtaine programme, historian Patrick Cassidy will provide an informative online talk titled: ‘County Cavan’s Linen Story’.

Patrick Cassidy is a lecturer in Cultural and Heritage studies at Cavan Institute and has lectured extensively on the flax and linen history of Co. Cavan.

Bailieborough Creative Hub are hosting an event for this year’s Cruiniu na nOg.

Over four Saturday workshops (21, 28 May & 4,11 June  11am to 1pm), at Bailieborough Library, The ‘Art’ of Visual Storytelling project aims to celebrate local stories, history, myths and folklore from Bailieborough, Co Cavan in ‘Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands’.  Artists from Bailieborough Creative Hub will guide the children through a selection of ‘stories’ to discover some history, myths and folklore, introduce them to  design processes, start an art journal, experience a selection of mixed media and a variety of creative techniques with the aim of producing a final artwork to be exhibited.

PLEASE NOTE: The workshops are for children aged 9 to 16 and are FREE however children will be expected to attend all 4 workshops to complete their artwork.

A Pop-up Covid-19 vaccination clinic will be held in Bailieborough Courthouse on Saturday 30th April
The clinic will run from 2pm to 6pm on Saturday afternoon and will offer Dose 1, Dose 2 and Booster vaccinations to those aged 12 years and over. and will run again on 28th May

  • The clinic is walk-in, no appointment necessary for all three vaccines.
  • For those aged 12 to 15 years they can receive their Booster dose after a 6 month interval from D2.
  • Those that have been COVID-19  Impacted must wait 28 days to receive D1 or D2 and 6 months to receive their Booster Dose.
  • For those aged 16 and over they can received their Booster dose after a 3 month interval from D2.
  • Those that have been COVID-19 Impacted must wait 28 days to receive D1 or D2 and 3 months to receive their Booster Dose.

Vintage Cycle (High Nelly): On Friday morning next, 29th April 2022, Greg O’Reilly (aka DJ Mark Gregory) will celebrate his 80th  Birthday. He is planning a Vintage Cycle on his 1960’s Raleigh bike from his home in Fartagh, Lisduff, Virginia to The Bailie Hotel, Bailieborough on Friday 29th  April 2022. We are welcoming everyone to join him on the cycle especially if you have a vintage bicycle.

All proceeds raised will go to the Holy Family Special School Cootehill where his grandson Shaun attends.

If anyone has a High Nelly and wants to join in, the meeting points will be at O’Neills Centra, Mullagh for 11.15/11.20am or Smyths Bar, Relaghbeg for 11.40/11.45am to the Bailie Hotel Bailieborough.

The pupils are from the catchment area of the counties of Cavan and Monaghan. The school caters for pupils with severe/profound learning disabilities, moderate/multiple learning disabilities and pupils with autism who also have a moderate/multiple or severe/profound learning disabilities.

Honora’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Annes Chrch on Monday, April 25th and afterwards, Hanora’s remains were laid to rest in St. Annes Cemetery.

Meath (formerly Rathlogan, Kingscourt) who passed away peacefully at her residence on Thursday, April 21st, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. Gwen was predeceased by her parents Maura and Paddy and sister Frances Callaghan. .

Well Done Leanne: Well done to Leanne Kiernan on an outstanding season with Liverpool Ladies and also picking up the Goal of the Year award. Leanne was instrumental in Liverpool gaining promotion to the top flight this year, with 13 goals in Liverpools twenty match unbeaten league run. She scored a goal on Sunday last, when the side defeated Sheffield United by 6—1 in their penultimate game of the season.

Pop-up COVID-19 vaccination clinic to be held in Bailieborough

A pop-up COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic will be held at the Courthouse in Bailieborough, Co. Cavan on Saturday April 30th.

The clinic will run from 2pm to 6pm on Saturday afternoon and will offer Dose 1, Dose 2 and Booster vaccinations to those aged 12 years and over.

Cavan CVC Operational Site Manager Eddie Ward said “This is the first in a series of pop-up clinics that will be run over the coming month across County Cavan, and are part of a broader County Cavan COVID-19 Vaccination Outreach Programme aimed at making COVID-19 vaccination as easy and as accessible as possible for local communities across County Cavan. We would encourage all those who are eligible to avail of the booster vaccine as soon as they are eligible. Those who had COVID-19 at Christmas time are now eligible for their booster vaccine. There are many ways of availing of our vaccination programme including at our pop-up vaccination centre in Bailieborough on Saturday.”

Bailieborough Red Cross: Ramor United GAA donated the proceeds of the raffle on their recent presentation night to the Ukrainian Appeal.

Julie O Brien IRC Director and Cavan Area treasurer accepted the cheque for €5000.00 on behalf of the IRC Ukrainian Humanitarian appeal. A huge thanks to all involved.

Oldcastle Ladies GFC have donated €1000 to the Irish Red Cross to help with the current crisis in Ukraine.

The cheque was presented to Julie O’Brien, Irish Red Cross (sister of Rosie Halpin in Millbrook!) by Connie Maguire, Treasurer and Pauline Hetherton, Secretary Oldcastle Ladies GFC.

Bailieborough Shamrocks LGFA AND Camogie Clubs: Our Easter cake sale was a welcome return to normality on Sunday morning last. A massive ‘Thank You’ to everyone who baked and brought and to everyone who came and bought. Congratulations to all our raffle prize winners. Sarah O’Reilly was the winner of the apartment draw ticket. Once again thank you everyone for your support.

A Celebration of Johnny’s Life took place in Clarkes Funeral Home, Bailieborough on Sunday, April 17th and following which, Johnny’s remains were laid to rest in Moynalty Cemetery.

Niamh Crosby Easter Sunday, Memorial Bike Run:

We are organising a motorbike run and fundraising for St James Hospital, the hospital in which Niamh got excellent care from her doctors and nurses during her illness.

The money raised will go toward the kit out of a family comfort room in Niamh’s memory and also go towards much-needed equipment that will help other patients through their treatment and care.

The motorbike run will be held on Sunday next, Easter Sunday 17th  April.

Registration starts at 10 am at Enagh House Virginia/Bailieborough Rd A82E5D8, and the run will commence at 12pm. All bikes Welcome

Congratulations: A huge congratulations to local man Kevin Carolan who was successful on his walk with Charlie Bird, his friend of recent times. Callaghan’s from Skeagh: Looking for relatives – Cindy Hart and members of her family are travelling to Knockbride from America, for Easter. She is the great granddaughter of Bridget Callaghan from Skeagh, Knockbride, daughter of William and Susan Callaghan. Bridget emigrated to America prior to 1903 and was joined by her sisters Margaret, Susan and Mary. When their mother Susan died in 1919, James her son was present.I would be grateful for any information on this family. As a child she recalls photos of a cousin Lizzie Callaghan from Knockbride. Irish Red Cross -Bailieborough Branch : Bailieborough Community School Transition year students presented the proceeds of their fundraiser for Ukrainian Humanitarian Appeal to Peter McCabe, Chairman of the Bailieborough Branch and Area Treasurer Julie O Brien. Following their non-uniform, yellow and blue fundraiser, they were able to donate €1,535 to Irish Red Cross. Money will go directly to help those working on the ground in Ukraine.

East Cavan Swim Club: Great day at the Enniskillen Lakelanders Junior Gala on Sunday last.

Well done to all our swimmers, Mason Mulvany and Alannah Smith with PBs in all races, Alana Carling with gold and silver medals, Anna Behme with 5 gold medals and Lúkas-Marcus Sungals with 3 gold medals.

Congratulations and Well Done: Congratulations and Well Done to local girl Leanne Kiernan and her Liverpool teammates, who secured promotion to the Women’s Super League after winning the Championship title with victory over second-placed Bristol City on Sunday afternoon last. The Liverpool ladies won by 4—2.  Well done Leanne on a great season and wishing you well in future games.

Niamh Crosby Easter Sunday, Memorial Bike Run: We are organising a motorbike run and fundraising for St James Hospital, the hospital in which she got excellent care from her doctors and nurses during her illness. The money raised will go toward the kit out of a family comfort room in Nimah’s memory and also go towards much-needed equipment that will help other patients through their treatment and care. The motorbike run will be held on Easter Sunday 17th  April. Registration starts at 10 am at Enagh House Virginia/Bailieborough Rd A82E5D8, and the run will commence at 12pm. New York, St. Patrick’s Day Parade: It was good to see Bailieborough natives, John Ryan, along with Sean Farrelly and Mick Giles Jnr from the Bailieborough Fire Service, as part of the Cavan Emergency Services group that took part in the New York City,  St Patrick’s day Parade 2022.

Wildflower and Tree Planting: Part of the Lawn at the rear of St. Annes is going to be ‘rewilded’. Parishioners are invited to help with the planting of native wildflower seeds in this space. Some trees will also be planted in the Church grounds and in St. Annes Cemetery. Please lend a hand on Saturday next, March 26th from 2.00pm to 5.00pm. Please bring hand-trowels and spades. Refreshments will be served. This is part of an ongoing initiative by the St. Annes Parish Green Group.

Regretted Deaths: The community were deeply saddened to learn of the deaths of Raymond Argue, Dunshaughlin and formerly of Church Street, Bailieborough, Monica McDermott (nee Clarke), Wolfe Tone Street, Cavan and formerly of Lakeview, Bailieborough and John Boylan, (father of Helen Kierans, Bexcourt Lawns), who all passed away recently. May they rest in peace.  

TUNNYDUFF SCHOOL: The Clothes Bank at St. Brigid’s National School, Tunnyduff, is available for use by all members of the community. As this facility generates welcome income for the school, we would very much appreciate your support.

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News, U11s and U13s putting in the good work on Monday nights on the astro at Bailieborough Shamrocks GAA. Keep it up lads! Some great talent in the club.
