Bailieborough Midsummer Festival is back. With only two weeks left until the Festival day on Sunday, July 24th , the programme of events is taking shape. Family Fun Day on Sunday, July 24th from 12-6pm. Duathlon, Dog Show, Kids Creation Station, Art Exhibition, Ducking Chair, Food and Craft stalls and lots of free amusements and entertainment.

Music by Paul Leavy followed by Big Generator.

Admission €10 per person – Children under 16 are free!

Duathlon in Bailieborough at St.Anne’s GAA pitch as part of the Festival. Run 2.5k, Cycle 20k and run 2.5 k.  No big hills involved. Fit for all 5 k fun run and a fun filled day afterwards in Bailieborough. Live music, dog shows, amusements and family entertainment.

Deepest Sympathy: Deepest Sympathy is extended to daughters, Marion (Noel) and Teresa (Adrian), sons Hugh (Debbie), Bernard (Philomena), Paul and Michael (Bridie), brothers Francie, Tommy and Billy, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister in law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends on the death of Patricia Cullivan (nee Reilly) Lisnalea, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan, who passed away peacefully at St Joseph’s Nursing Home, Virginia surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, July 6th 2022. Patricia was predeceased by her husband Hugh and sons Stephen and Andrew.

Patricia’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Anne’s Church, Bailieborough on Friday, July 8th  and  afterwards, Patricia’s remains were laid to rest in St. Anne’s Cemetery.

Congratulations and Well Done: Congrats to Katie Mulvey and all the East Cavan Swim Team on an amazing achievement in Limerick at the Irish National Division 2 Championship last week. Katie won silver in her 100 Breaststroke final– a superb race with a fantastic finish.

Historic day for the club and a very proud one for Katie, the Mulvey family and Katie’s coaches: Janis Sungals, Zoe and all the team.  Katie also won a Bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke.  

Well done to Anna Behme, Aoibheann Taaffe, Lian Moore, Katie Mulvey and Roisin Pierce, all with amazing personal achievements and representing their club so well.

Regretted Death: Deepest Sympathy is extended to son Paul, daughter Carol, brother Gerry, sisters Maura, Bernie and Geraldine, grandchildren, nephews, nieces and extended family and friends on the death of Philip Farrelly, Bristol, England and formerly Galbolie, Bailieborough, Co Cavan, who passed away on Wednesday, 6th  July 2022, peacefully in England. Philip was predeceased by his wife Sheila. Philip’s Funeral will take place in England at a later date. 

. Bailieboro Celtic A.F.C.: Well done to our U12 girls soccer team who beat Arva/Killeshandra/Cornafean last week, in what was a very entertaining and hard fought match, to progress to the County final of the Community Games.

We’ll done to all the girls and boys who turned up for the first night of the Summer Soccer Academy. Hope to see ye all again next Wednesday evening at 6.30pm. Any children born between 2012 and 2015 very welcome to come along next week- the academy will run every Wednesday evening throughout July and August.

On Saturday 23rd July, starting at 11 am, in Bailieborough Development Association, Bailieborough Business Centre, Shercock Rd., A82 HH58, with a cup of coffee/tea followed by a tour and talk on the Old Church of Ireland Graveyard by Margaret Mortimer. Talk and tour of Bailieborough town by Carmel O’Callaghan.

Lunch followed by talk and tour of Moybologue Graveyard by Brian Callaghan. Suitable Rain gear and footwear are necessary.

Brendan’s Funeral Mass took place in the Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea, Bundoran, on Monday, July 11th  with burial afterwards in St. Ninnidh’s Cemetery, Newtown, Bundoran.

Local Man to climb Croagh Patrick—Three times in the one day, with his two sons: Local man, Derek McElwaine and his two sons, James (aged 11) and Conor (aged 8) are hoping to climb Croagh Patrick, three times on Sunday, July 10th in aid of the Bailieborough Cancer Comfort Ltd.

Derek takes up the story ”Both my mother and father had cancer and my father used this vital service. My sons are James aged 11 and Conor aged 8 and in 2019 we climbed the mountain and James wanted to do it again that day, so we decided the next time we climb it, we would do it twice for Charity and when he accomplished it twice, he decided that he wants to do it three time’s this year. Both children have great stamina and I have to say, they keep me on my toes but I don’t expect them to do it 3 times, if they do it twice, they will be doing great. I will do it the third time. We plan to do it on Sunday next, 10th  July and I will be posting videos on my Facebook page, so people can follow our progress on the mountain that day. People can donate by the link on the fundraiser I set up on Facebook or there are sponsorship cards in Bailieborough and surrounding area in the pubs and shops or people can donate in Foxes Bar and Restaurant in Bailieborough”. Last year, Derek and the two boys did the climb twice for the same charity. Bailieborough Parish Pastoral Council: The following people have accepted their nomination to serve as members of the Parish Pastoral Council representing the Bailieborough Area: Imelda Carolan, Jimmy Fox, Leanne Ledwith, Cyril Keegan, Sean O’Reilly, John Edward Sheanon, Oola Sheridan and Julie Smith. Nadine Clarke is automatically a member of the Parish Council because she is the Parish Safeguarding Representative for the Bailieborough Area. Andrea Connolly, the Parish Pastoral Assistant, may also attend meetings from time to time. The first meeting of the new Pastoral Council will be held after the Summer break in September. The Pastoral Council once it meets and begins its work, may decide to co-opt one or two others if it is felt to be neccessary.

We wish the new Pastoral Council well during their four year term of office and the newly elected members are thanked for their willingness to accept their nominations to the role.

Many Thanks: The committee of Corglass Presbyterian Church and the local community wish to express their grateful thanks and appreciation to Sillan Vintage Club for organising and running the Tractor/Vintage run on Saturday, June 11th. The event was held to raise funds for the provision and installation of a defibrillator to be placed outside Corglass Church Hall for use in the local community.

The support of the Corglass congregation, all those who came along and drove their tractors and cars on the day and those who made donations is greatly appreciated. Corglass Ladies Committee served refreshments in the Church Hall after the event and an enjoyable afternoon was had by all in attendance.

A ‘Training Session’ on how to use a defibrillator, will take place in Corglass Church Hall this Thursday evening, July 7th at 8.00pm, to which everyone is cordially invited to attend.  

Tierworker: ‘Young at Heart’: Back to pre-Covid games of Bowls, Rings, Box Hockey, Jenga, Indoor and Outdoor Tennis, Board Games and Darts, followed by the usual warm-down, tea and a chat. This all takes place in St. Mary’s Hall, Tierworker, commencing this Thursday evening, July 7th at 8.00pm. Come along for the chat and a cuppa!! All welcome.

Carmel’s Funeral Mass took place in St Kilian’s Church, Mullagh on Wednesday, June 29th  followed by committal prayers and cremation at Lakelands Crematorium, Dublin Rd., Cavan.

East Cavan Swimming Club: Congratulations to our four swimmers Alana Carling, Mason Mulvany, Wilhelm Behme  and Daibhi Mulvany, all with super performances and Personal Bests at the Swim Ulster Swim Festival held in Lisburn on Sunday last.

Well done to Wilhelm with a Silver and Gold and special congratulations to Daibhi achieving a Bronze medal at this event.

Congratulations: Congratulations to Knockbride girl, Tara Rogers who was selected as the Cavan Rose 2022 for the annual Rose of Tralee Festival in the Hotel Kilmore on Sunday evening last.

Cavan Older People Council’s Information Roadshow: The Cavan Older People’s Council are hosting Information Roadshows during the month of June. The aim of the roadshows is to provide older adults with an opportunity to come together again after the lockdowns at a physical event. Up to date information on services available to older adults will be available along with the opportunity to participate in some social activities on the morning. Free goody bags will also be available on the day. The Information Roadshows will take place on:

Wednesday 22nd  June at 10:30am – 2pm / Bailie Hotel / Bailieborough and

Wednesday 29th  June at 10:30am – 2pm / Kilmore Hotel / Cavan.

There will be a host of Information Stands at the events along with the following talks and demonstrations:

11am: An Garda Síochána Crime Prevention Officer –Property Marking Machine demonstration and Crime Prevention Talk.

11:30am: Chair Based Exercise demonstration.

12pm: Nutritional eating for older adults.

12:30pm: Health & Wellbeing Talk.

1pm: Genealogy – How to trace your family tree.

1:30pm: Social Prescribing – how older adults can benefit.

All older adults are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

Summer Songs of Praise: On Sunday next, 26th June there will a ‘Songs of Praise’ Service in Bailieborough Church at 3pm. We will be singing some favourite hymns, as chosen by the people. Public Consultation Meeting: Funding has been secured to facilitate improvement works to the existing Bailieborough Courthouse and Bridewell building and to upgrade the public area adjoining the Bailieborough Courthouse at the junction of Main St. And the Shercock Road.

Cavan County Council are holding a Public Consultation evening in the hall of Bailieborough Courthouse on this Thursday evening, June 23rd at 7.00pm, regarding the proposed upgrade work. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Deepest Sympathy: Deepest Sympathy is extended to brothers, Tommy and Benny, nephews, nieces, sister in law, relatives, friends and very good neighbours on the death of Bridgie Lynch, Corravilla, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, 18th June 2022,  at Cavan General Hospital. St. Anne’s, Killann: Over the last while St Anne’s Killann has undergone a lot of repairs. Insulation has been improved, dampness addressed, external doors replaced and it has been painted inside and out. Thanks to parishioners whose weekly financial contribution makes this work possible and makes St Anne’s a beautiful house of prayer.

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 20th June 2022

Seniors; The Seniors host St. Malachys from Armagh in round three of the Cuchulainn league on Wednesday in Mullagh. Training continues on Monday at 8 in Bailieborough. Under 13/15/17; The Under 13s had a good outing in Carrick on Shannon on Saturday last, where they had two good competitive games v Longford Slashers and the hosts Carrick. These were good games which will bring them on no end. Next up is a trip to Kingspan Breffni for a Cavan blitz on Monday. The Under 17s have joined with North Meath for the Tain League which will begin next Monday. Under 11; The lads have another round of the Monaghan league on Sunday next with a game in Meath league the following week. Under 7/9; A great trip to Cloghan on Wednesday last as both U7s and U9s had four good games v Monaghan opposition. The next round will be in two weeks in Carrick tbc. Bailieborough Midsummer Festival and Town Events: Bailieborough MidSummer Festival is back. We’re so excited to announce we are back for the first time since 2019 on Sunday, July 24th.

CALLING ALL CREATIVES : Calling all crafters, food vendors, clubs and local groups for the Bailieborough Midsummer Festival 2022.

We are now accepting applications for stalls on Main St. on Sunday, July 24th from 12-6pm. For more details/application forms please email,

Summer Songs of Praise: On Sunday 26th June there will a ‘Songs of Praise’ Service in Bailieborough Church at 3pm. We will be singing some favourite hymns, as chosen by the people. Sean’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Annes Church on Tuesday, June 7th and afterwards, his remains were laid to rest in St. Annes Cemetery.

Under 13/15/17; The under 13s have their divisional semi final and hopefully final in the Tain League this coming Saturday while the 15s wait for the next competition.The 13s are away to Castleblayney on Monday for a challenge. The Under 17s have joined with North Meath for the Tain League which will begin next Monday. Under 11; The lads had a very positive morning in Monaghan when they travelled to Truagh Gaels for the U11 league. Next up is a trip to Wolfe Tones on Wednesday next in the Meath league 7pm. Under 7/9; First trip for our U7s as they will travel with the U9s to Cloghan on Wednesday next for GoGames blitz at 7pm.

Killan Community Games: Killan community games (incorporating Bailieborough and Shercock) will be entering the Girls soccer competitions at U12 and U15 age groups. We’ll be holding open training sessions over the next few weeks, where any interested girls from the Bailieborough and Shercock area are welcome to come along, join in and have some fun. Tractor Run: Sillan Vintage Club will hold a tractor run on Saturday next, 11th June 2022. Vintage and classic cars and bikes are also welcome and will travel a separate route. Bailieborough Midsummer Festival and Town Events: Bailieborough MidSummer Festival is back. We’re so excited to announce we are back for the first time since 2019 on Sunday, July 24th. Full details to follow soon.

Vintage Cycle (High Nelly): A Cavan man who celebrated his 80th  birthday with a nearly 20 kilometre Charity Cycle has raised over €3,000 for a local special educational needs school.

Greg O’Reilly undertook t he fundraiser on his vintage 1960s bike in aid of Holy Family Special School, Cootehill, where his grandson is a pupil.

 He said that he’s delighted to raise funds for a school that does “trojan work”.

On Friday 20th May, Gregory O’Reilly presented a cheque to Rachel Moynagh, Principal Holy Family School with a cheque for €3,310 proceeds raised.

Greg got a lovely welcome in Baileborough on the morning of the cycle and wishes to thank everyone for donating.

East Cavan Swim Club: Very proud of these swimmers representing East Cavan Swim Club at an International meet in Glasgow over the weekend.

Congratulations to Adrienne Keuck, Finn Longmore, Johann Behme, Katie Mulvey and Oscar Longmore on fantastic swims in the Glasgow International Meet, held over the weekend.  Very exciting to see Johann reach the Junior finals in the 50m fly and to see Oscar winning his heat in the 50m back.

A great weekend, enjoyed by swimmers and families, hopefully our club can look forward to more of these in the future.

After 3km turn left for Newbliss R189. Continue on this road and park at The Black Kesh Bar (Disused) on the righthand side.  Walk commencing at 7.15pm.

(M) – 1.5hr approx. Leaving Baillieborough Library at 7.00pm. Meet at roadside opposite Skeaghville Chalets. From Bailieborough take Cavan road for 3 km, turn right for Cootehill Road R191 , At 2km take a right at sign for Skeaghville, continue straight on this road for approx 2km. Walk commencing at 7.15pm.

Killan Community Games: Killan community games (incorporating Bailieborough and Shercock) will be entering the Girls soccer competitions at U12 and U15 age groups. We’ll be holding open training sessions over the next few weeks, where any interested girls from the Bailieborough and Shercock area are welcome to come along, join in and have some fun. Congratulations: Congratulations to the Bailieborough Shamrocks u12 girls Divison 2 side who won the Spring League final by Bailieborough 0-18 v 0-09 Mullahoran in Crosskeys on Tuesday night last. Well done to the players, management and supporters on what was a very good final.

Deepest Sympathy: Deepest Sympathy is extended to wife Celestina, daughter Anne (Theou), sons Gibson (Chie) and Nico (Fatima), grandchildren Trinity, Patrick, Alexia and Kiel, sister Elvie, brother Benjamin, nieces, nephews and extended family and friends in Ireland and the Philippines on the death of Fidel Alhambra, Woodview, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan who passed away on Friday, 20th  May 2022 peacefully, at Cavan General Hospital. Fidel’s Funeral Mass was held in St. Anne’s Church, Bailieborough on Wednesday, May 25th followed by cremation  in Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION:

Congratulations to the children from St. Annes and the Model Schools who made their First Communion last weekend. Thanks to their teachers, Ms. Tessa O’Riordan and the Principal, Mr. Corcoran and the school choir led by Mrs. Mary McCabe for all their hard work and to the Pastoral Assistant, Andrea Connolly for her work liaising on behalf of the Parish with the children from both schools.

Tractor Run: Sillan Vintage Club will hold a tractor run on Saturday 11th  June 2022. Vintage and classic cars and bikes are also welcome and will travel a separate route. Entry fee €20 with proceeds to fund a AED Defibrillator for Corglass Church and surrounding areas. Refreshments afterwards in the church hall. All support greatly appreciated.
