Following on from a successful festival in Bailieboro this summer with great community spirit, there will be a meeting to discuss the Christmas lights next Tuesday, August 22nd in the Business Centre, Shercock Road at 8.30pm. A great line-up of poets from Ireland, the UK and the USA, including Noel Monahan, Patrick Chapman and Gerard Smyth, American poet Linda Opyr and Emily Wills from the UK.

Heritage Week – Bailieborough Activities:

Saturday 19^th August at 4.00pm in Bailieborough Library: “People, place and time” an exhibition of Benny Duffy’s (Nolagh), photographs and memorabilia. Benny Duffy took many photographs. This personal collection contains black and white images of family, friends and neighbours when many did not have cameras or the prudence to preserve and archive their photographs. These photographs should have a particular interest to people from the Bailieborough, Shercock and Kingscourt areas. Bailieborough Library will host the exhibition upstairs at The Market House. Admission Free, Refreshments Served. Exhibition will be on display for the duration of Heritage Week.

Saturday 26^th August at 8.00pm sharp – Doors 7.30 – Bailieborough Business Centre: “A Wilde Victorian Evening” presented by Patrick Walsh and guest on the life, loves, wit and wisdom of Oscar Wilde. Admission Free, Refreshments Served, Victorian Dress Encouraged, Not suitable for young children.

Kevin Barton, Landscape and Geophysical Services, will present the results of a community remote sensing survey at Moybologue old graveyard as well as preliminary results from a survey of a ring-barrow. All welcome.

Bailieborough Midsummer Festival was buzzing over the Festival weekend. Congratulations to the Bailieborough Midsummer Festival team who did an amazing job of bringing community spirit back into the town. To the Committee – Kieran Donohoe – Chairperson; Seamus Rahill – Vice Chair; PJ Barry – Secretary; Aidan Clarke – Treasurer; Peadar Clerkin – Vice Treasurer; Gareth Mulhall – PRO, all the stewards, sponsors and helpers and all who turned up at all the events over the weekend,–thank you for all your hard work and dedication. The atmosphere and feedback from people has been amazing and for once, the weather played ball!! which helped enormously with the ‘feel good’ factor over the weekend. See you all again next year for Bailieborough Midsummer Festival 2018!!

Update on St. Anne’s Renovations:

St. Anne’s Church is on course to be opened on time for the 7.00pm Mass on Saturday evening next, August 5^th. Painting, decorating, electrical and plumbing work is nearing completion in the main body of the Church and the floor work—which will include sanding and waxing of the floorboards and the laying of a stone carpet on the main aisle and sanctuary, will take place over the coming week. The project will not be completely finished on the 5^th of August—just the elements that required the total clearance of the seating from the Church and the use of scaffolding. Work will continue on St. Joseph’s Chapel, the Sacristy, storerooms, the roof and the Parish Centre throughout August. Some minor works will also require completion in the main body of the Church in the weeks after it re-opens.

The ‘Open Door’ Sessions:

We’re delighted to welcome back local musician Sam Geraghty with his new three-piece band Safari. Safari have a sound that is difficult to describe, one part surf-pop, one part neo-punk, either way their live shows are reported to be well worth experiencing.

Niki Purcell is a landscape artist who is exhibiting at the Bailieborough Library in conjunction with the Bailieborough Mid-Summer Festival. We’re looking forward to her interview with resident interviewer, Elena Duff.

​Paul McCann is singer/songwriter from Co Cavan. He has performed with The Strypes, Sandy Kelly, Duncan Maitland (Picturehouse) and Nelson Bragg (Brian Wilson Band/Beach Boys), among others. In 2015 Paul released his highly-acclaimed debut EP which was titled ‘The Magician’. July 2017 will see the release of his second self-produced and home recorded EP titled ‘Press Record’. Bailieborough Red Cross—New Defibrillator:

Well done to the Local Red Cross who installed a very important piece of life saving equipment beside the ‘Carry Out Shop’ on the corner of Bailieborough Main Street and the Shercock Road over the weekend. Defibrillators are so important in every area. They can be the difference between life and death. We never know when someone in our community will need one. Please respect this vital piece of life saving equipment. A big WELL DONE and MASSIVE PRAISE most go to the Local Red Cross who always have our best interests at heart.

Mybologue Historical Society:

The committee are absolutely bowled over by the turnout and response they have had over the weekend. A strong community spirit and willingness of people to volunteer and give of their time is definitely alive and well in the parish of Kilmainhamwood and Moybologue, the surrounding townlands, Bailieboro, Killann, Maudabawn, Nolagh, Shercock and East Cavan in general! A huge thank you to everyone who turned out over the last few days from near and far to volunteer and support. It is all hugely appreciated.

With your help we managed to number all 337 grave-markers, photograph the inscriptions of all 337 grave-markers, and record in excess of 170 of the inscriptions. This was no mean feat in two days!

Thank you to John Tierney from Eachtra Archaeological Projects for leading the project so efficiently, in sunshine and rain, and keeping everyone interested and involved over the two days.

To the volunteers who took part in numbering, photographing and recording; Eamonn Donnelly, Joe Gargan, Amy Gargan, Carmel O’Callaghan, Lloyd Forde, Tony McCabe, Catherine McCormack, Lil McCormack, Patricia Brady, Bernard McEntee and John Joe O’Reilly.

To those who came along and provided information regarding loved ones interred in the graveyard, especially Patricia Brady, who also gave us great information on the two grave-markers made by her grandfather Jemmie O’Reilly from Bailieboro, Rose McCabe and Joe McCabe and William Daly who all gave information about their ancestors buried in the graveyard.

To T.P. Callaghan, Ultan Callaghan and Matt Donnellan who came along and provided invaluable insight into the restoration works on the graveyard in 1988 and local history of the graveyard throughout the years.

To the many people who called in to observe and chat over the last few days, Fr. John Cooney PP, Kathleen Cooney, Terence Dunne, Vincent Meleady, Justin O’Reilly and many others.

Retirement of Ms Imelda Traynor—St. Anne’s National School:

The staff, pupils and parents of St. Anne’s National School, staged a marvellous celebration on Tuesday morning last (June 27^th) to mark the retirement of Ms. Imelda Traynor, Deputy Principal, who has been a teacher in the school for 40 years, effectively all of her teaching career. The day began with a flash dance in the school yard at 9.30am and Mass in the School Hall at 10am. After Mass there followed, drama, poetry and song all in honour of Ms. Traynor. The students performed beautifully throughout and the staff had all the varied events on the morning very well organised. It was truly reflective of the vibrant school community that Ms. Traynor has contributed to so much over the years. On behalf of the Parish Community, we thank Ms. Traynor and wish her many happy years of retirement.

The Bailieborough Poetry Festival and Poetry Competition 2017:

This October will see the hosting of the 5th annual Bailieborough Poetry Festival in the east Cavan town. After last year’s successful collaboration with The Gallery Press we have gone for a different line-up of artists in 2017. There will be local, national and international talents performing during the weekend’s activities.

From Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th October there will be numerous events organised by LitLab including a visual art exhibition in the local Library arts space, a launch of the LitLab group’s third anthology of poems, a musical performance of spoken word, poetry workshops by visiting poets, interviews, open mic events, the presentation of the Bailieborough Poetry prize sponsored by the Bailie Hotel and a walking tour of local literary places of interest.

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 3rd July 2017

Our indoor season for our U6/8/10s came to an end on Thursday last in Kingscourt and Friday in Bailieborough. No training in July/August, just games where we can get them. We may be going to Clontibret this coming Friday. Players will receive a text.

The lads had a good trip to Ashbourne on Sunday to play the hosts, and gave a very good account of themselves in a very entertaining game, and then on to Croke Park to watch the Leinster Hurling final between Galway and Wexford in front of over 60’000 supporters in a great atmosphere. Thanks to Colin, Ben and Donal and the player parents who travelled for their continued good work with the boys. No training Monday. Game on Friday away to Clontibret.

Thank you! Peadar Clerkin and family offer their sincere thanks to everyone who supported the ‘Ann Clerkin Memorial Walk’ on May, 27^th last. A very special ‘Thank You’ to all who helped out on the day. The event was a great success and raised €9,000, which will be divided equally between Bailieborough Cancer Comfort Fund, Bailieborough Mental Health Association and the Multi-Sensory Unit for the ASD Class in Bailieborough Community School.

RENOVATIONS – CHURCH CLOSURE:

St. Anne’s Church will close for three to four weeks from Monday next, June 26^th to enable renovation work.  During this time, the Community School Board of Management have kindly given permission to use the Assembly Hall for Saturday evening and Sunday morning Masses.  The Community Centre will be used for week day Masses and in the event of funerals St. Anne’s Church, Killann, St. Patrick’s Church, Tierworker and St. Brigid’s Church, Tunnyduff, will be available.

Jason Donohoe, Adult Guidance Officer will be in Bailieborough Library on Tuesday 27^th, June 2017 from 2 to 4pm to meet with people interested in career guidance and further education. Bailieborough Tidy Towns:

We will continue the clean up every Tuesday at 7pm (for one hour only). Lots of help needed.  We would appreciate if business / home owners in the area would do a ‘clean-up’ also! Well done to the Bailieborough Tidy Towns on their very innovative hanging baskets! They have made a huge difference to our Main Street and the town looks very clean, colourful and cared for! Bailieboro’ Church of Ireland Annual BBQ: 

The Bailieboro’ Church of Ireland Annual BBQ takes place on Saturday, 1st July, from 5pm onwards in Bailieboro’ Parish Church Hall. Everyone welcome, please come along and bring your friends

Bailieborough Men’s Shed:

Members meet every Monday morning from 10am at the Beckscourt Centre. Members of the Shed are able to gather socially or work on meaningful projects at their own pace, in their own time and in the company of other men. The main objective is to advance the Health and Wellbeing of the participants. If you are interested, we would love to see you. Drop in next Monday or any Monday and say ‘Hello’!

The Club’s ‘Presentation Evening’ for teams who played over the winter season was held in Sky Bar on Saturday, 10^th June. The following were the Award Winners:  Senior award winners were: Top Goal Scorer: Luke Gilsenan. Player’s ‘Player of the Season’ were Tony O’ Reilly and Luke Gilsenan equal votes. Moybologue Historical Society:

If any people have any old photographs, especially pre-late-1980s photographs, taken in the old Moybologue Cemetery, or knows of anyone who has photographs, the members of the Society would be very interested to see them as we are trying to build a picture of the layout of the graveyard before the FAS led restoration works in the late 1980s. We are interested in the locations of grave mounds in the graveyard, where digging down wasn’t possible, so clay was piled up on a shallow grave. Any information would be gratefully received.

Bailieborough Library Parent, Baby and Toddler Group has proven to be a vital life line for all stay-at-home parents who may be new to the area and wish to get out of the house and make new friends. There is a huge range of toys for children to play with, while parents can enjoy a cup of tea and chat.

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 19th June 2017 Feile na nGael 2017.

What an incredible weekend in Carlow and Kilkenny at National Feile. Full reports and lots of pictures on our Facebook page. A few words of thanks.

Our players;What an exceptional group of boys to work with. Some aged 11 and attending their first ever Feile while some of the more experienced boys were at their fourth. No a cross word between them over the entire weekend sometimes when games were very tough. Their playing performances were incredible and we could see boys growing into young men before our eyes over the weekend. A special word for the younger lads who performed heroics against sometimes much physically bigger opponents and never once let their heads drop. Very well behaved over the entire weekend and are again a credit to our club, Cavan hurling, their families and the local community. You can be assured that these boys have a bright future on the hurling field and beyond. Well done lads.

Our host club; Naomh Bríd Hurling and Camogie Club in Leighlinbridge Co. Carlow were our hosts for the weekend. They went above and beyond what would be expected from Feile hosts ensuring the club will never forget this experience. As we said on Saturday at the presentation event taking the first steps off the bus on Friday afternoon was like walking on air. Nothing was too much trouble and no one wanted for anything. The boys were taken care of to an incredible degree by the host families and we are so thankful to them for that. Our most competitive game of the weekend was against our hosts in what was a great occasion. Even though they got knocked out at the quarter final stage a large and supportive group of Naomh Brid supporters descended on St. Johns Park, Kilkenny, home of famed O’Loughlin Gaels GAA club on Sunday to support us and the standing ovation from all of them while leaving the field will live long in the memory. From all of us at East Cavan Gaels we give most gracious thanks to our remarkable hosts in particular Catriona and Adrian whose work to ensure a great weekend was a huge success. The presentation event, the disco, the food, the food and did we mention the food!! Incredible hospitality never to be forgotten. Please call in if passing the area. It is a most beautiful part of the country with remarkably friendly people.

Our management team; To Pat and Kathryn we give immeasurable thanks for the work put in with these boys in preparation for this competition. Months and months of preparation got just reward with outstanding performances from a squad which had players of various ages and abilities working together to achieve something we never have done before, qualify for Feile Sunday. These things do not happen by chance and we are very lucky to have both as dedicated to the club as we have. Be very proud of your achievements this weekend.

Our support crew; To Jack Barry and Brendan O’Reilly who kept the boys on their toes and ready for action. It is great to have the likes of Jack, one of our senior players, come with us and give the boys the benefit of his experience. It is great to see him give time back to the club and the boys responded with great performances. To Caroline, Joan, Michelle, Des, Anthony, Michael and Miriam we also give most gracious thanks for your time, effort and patience over a very busy weekend. It is the unseen or unheralded work in the background which ensures the weekend is the success that it was.

Our travelling families; Great support from our player families as they made the journey down to Carlow. It is great for the boys to have this level of support for their hurling at home and its events like this that will drive them forward to adult hurling in the years ahead.

Our bus driver; The very capable and experienced Tony who got our crew to all events safely. A very busy weekend for him and again we are most appreciative of his experience and patience.

To everyone; If I missed out on anyone the I do apologise, but we are now officially wrecked from our endeavours! Everyone played their part in making this weekend a success and we are sure the boys have memories to last a lifetime. We will have another new crew of boys stepping up next year and they will have big boots to fill. Thanks to all our fundraising teams who ensured the boys had a great weekend with all their new gear, Training tops, hoodies, tracksuits bags etc. They really looked the part. A lot of positive words from all in Carlow, Kilkenny for our exploits, people were so very kind everywhere we went. A glorious sunny weekend which will be hard to beat.

Now it’s back to the Cavan and Monaghan leagues and Championships and we look forward to Feile 2018 which will be held in Connaught.

Bailieborough Shamrocks GAA

Will host South London boys U14s, and Carrickedmond of Longford girls U14 for this weekends Feile.

While the girls will play most of their group games (Friday) and qtr finals

(Saturday) in Drumgoon, moving to Shercock and Kingscourt for Semi Finals and Finals on Sunday. The boys will host all Group A games as well as Group A and B quarter finals on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th in St Anne’s Park Bailieborough. Games on Friday kick off at 6.30pm, 2nd game at 7.30pm. Saturday morning we play our hosts in the final group games in St Anne’s Park- Ladies game is at 10am and boys at 11am. Later in the day at 3.30pm the boys quarter finals will be played, in St Anne’s park. Boys Semi Finals and Final are in Clones on Sunday.
