Bailieborough Group of Parishes

The following services and events will be happening over the Harvest season at the Bailieborough Group of Parishes.  As ever, it’s an open house and so all are invited and welcome to come along.

Saturday 24th September: 3pm Bailieborough Hall: Messy Church.  Fun, craft, celebration time and food. Everyone is invited – young and old alike, adults, children, teenagers, carers, grandparents. Come as a family or come on your own. Children must bring an adult with them.

Sunday 25th September: 3pm Mullagh Church, Speaker Rev Nick Jones

Sunday 2nd October: 7:30pm Shercock Church, Speaker Philip McKinley (Chaplin to DCU).

Bailieborough Community School Parents Association

The Bailieborough Community School Parents Association are holding a Tractor, Vintage Car and Motorcycle Run on Sunday next, September 25^th in aid of the Student Canteen Upgrade Fund. Registration and refreshments from 11am at the Community School. The Run will commence at 12 noon. Admission fee is €20 per entrant and all entrants must be over 18 years of age. HARVEST DISPLAY

The annual Harvest Display will be in the sanctuary next weekend in St. Anne’s Church, Bailieborough, and in St. Patrick’s Church, Shercock. The display will be blessed at the weekend Masses and prayers of thanksgiving will be offered for the natural gifts God has given for us to enjoy and protect in this world.

 

BAILIEBOROUGH TIDY TOWN’S GROUP – MOVING FORWARD

 A meeting will take place on Tuesday, 4^th October in the Bailie Hotel at 8pm sharp. Aimed at developing the group and forming a new committee for 2017. If you are concerned by Bailieboro town and surrounding environment, please attend. New ideas and assistance very welcome.

Lakelands Arch Club

WE’RE BACK!!!!!New season of our arch club is starting again on the last Wednesday of every month from 7-9pm in the Bailieborough Business Centre, Shercock Road. BAILIEBOROUGH GARDENING GROUP

Resumes on Monday next, 26^th September at 8pm in Fox’s Bar and Lounge, Main Street, with a talk by Barry Kavanagh on pre winter tidy up in your garden and seed swopping.  All welcome.

HOPE

Ten years ago John had a liver transplant as a direct result of addiction to drugs and alcohol. Today, John devotes all his time to bringing hope to those who maybe in need—especially the homeless, those suffering from addictions, suicide, self-harmers and people with eating disorders.  Come and hear his life changing story and his message of hope on Wednesday, 21^st September in the Bailie Hotel at 7.30pm.

 

Bailieborough Mental Health Association

The Cootehill Pony Club are holding their Annual Pony Drivers and Friends Memorial Drive 2016 in aid of the Bailieborough Mental Health Association and the Cavan Autism Parents Support Group on Sunday next, September 25^th in Ballyconnell, commencing at 2.00pm. Barbeque, Raffle and Auction afterwards in ‘Lizzie Buggies’, Ballyconnell. Everyone welcome.

 Bailieborough Development Association is in the process of compiling a database with all community groups contact details in the area. If you are involved with any group as a member or a volunteer, be it sports, keep fit, community employment, youth work, anything at all, please call 042-969-4716  with the contact details for the group or email bda@bailieborough.com, don’t think that somebody else will call with the details. This database will be a valuable resource for the whole community, and will help us all communicate with each other on matters involving our community.

Bailieborough Cancer Comfort Ltd

On August 19th we held our annual Forest Walk, and are delighted to say that donations received amounted to €1080. To all who braved the wet evening to walk with us and to those who donated in any way we sincerely thank you all.

Bailieborough Library Parent, Baby and Toddler Group has proven to be a vital life line for all stay-at-home parents who may be new to the area and wish to get out of the house and make new friends. There is a huge range of toys for children to play with, while parents can enjoy a cup of tea and chat.

The group meets at the Library Arts space every Wednesday at 10.30am-12pm. Why not join their Facebook Group and keep up to date with news and events.

The Bailieborough Poetry Festival and Poetry Competition 2016

This year we are celebrating the fourth Bailieborough Poetry festival and in keeping with previous festivals we have expanded the number of artists and poets coming to Bailieborough on the weekend of 6th -8th October.

The LitLab group of writers are hosting a weekend of readings, workshops, open mic sessions, art exhibitions, etc. The festival this year welcomes Gallery Press and this promises to be a significant addition to the 2016 festival.  One of the highlights of the weekend in past years has been the live adjudication of the shortlisted poets in The Bailieborough Poetry Competition. Full programme of events will be published next week.

ASSIST (APPLIED SUICIDE INTERVENTION SKILL TRAINING):

Seamie’s Hair Cut

Last Saturday saw the local iconic figure of Seamie Sheridan getting his locks cut, in aid of the Bailieboro Cancer Care fund. This was a preliminary event to assist the Shamrocks Golf Society in their efforts to raise funds for the same cause in a Golf Classic on 16/17 September in Virginia.

Thanks goes to Rosa for getting the deed done and to all the staff at The Square bar for their assistance, to everyone who supported the event and contributed to the worthy cause and especially to Seamie who went along with the “off the cuff “ idea.

To date, over €1440 euro has been raised, showing how much the local community wanted to see Seamie come out from under all that “grey mass “he has been parading around in for some time. Contributions can still be made at The Square Bar or Hall’s Newsagent’s. Again Thank you to all involved for making the night such a success.

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL PILGRIMAGE TO KNOCK

On Saturday next, 10^th September.  Bus leaving from the Community Centre at 8.30am.  There are still a few seats left and these can be booked with €15 bus fare in Vincent’s Shop, Main Street.

Deepest Sympathy

Deepest Sympathy is extended to wife Rose, daughters Deborah, Laura and Ann, sons Damien and Barrie, grandson Liam and extended network of family and friends on the sudden death of Eamonn Sheridan, Dunheeda, Kingscourt and formerly of Drumbannon, Bailieborough who died on Monday, August 29^th. Eamonn’s Funeral Mass took place took place in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Kingscourt on Thursday morning September 1^st with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

New Mother-Toddler Group

MiniMovers is a new weekly activity class for children from 3 months up to 5 years of age.

With a focus on encouraging movement through music, song and play it creates a fun space for young children to develop their physical, social and early educational needs.

Bailieborough Shamrocks GAA

The Shamrocks Golf Society are running a 4 Person Team Event in Virginia Golf Club on the 16th and 17th September 2016 in aid of Bailieborough Cancer Comfort Ltd. Each and every one of us has had a family member, relation or friend who has had to battle cancer and we are just trying to raise money for this wonderful cause. East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 5th September 2016

Under 6/8/10; A great evening of hurling in Kingscourt on Friday last at the finals of our own U10 tournament. East Cavan Gaels won the McCuill Plate after an entertaining game v Colmcilles B side. Castleblayney came out winners in a hard fought Setanta Shield Final against Cootehill and after a fine display of hurling by both sides while Colmcilles A side defeated a gallant Carrickmacross side to secure the first ever CuChulainn Cup. The finals followed the earlier rounds which most clubs hosted a round of competition. A very worthwhile exercise as boys got well over 20 games each in the competition.

Under 12/14; The under 14s had a bye last week in the championship. We play away to Annalee Gaels this Wednesday at 6.45.

Under 16/18; Our U16s, with a very tight squad, ran Knockbridge to a couple of points in the Ulster league on Wednesday last. A very good performance in which the result could have easily went the other way.

Lucky First Goal;

The lucky first goal time from the All Ireland Senior Hurling Final is 41:41. Get scratching and best of luck. You have till October 4th to collect your prize.

‘Charity Barber Style Haircut Event’

The Bailieborough Shamrocks Golf Society are running a golf classic in aid of Bailieborough Cancer Comfort Ltd on 16/17 Sept in Virginia. Teams of four are €100. Anybody interested contact Seamie Sheridan on (086) 0532174.

As a prelude to this Golf Classic, the Society have “encouraged” the aforementioned Seamie Sheridan to do a badly needed “Barber Style Hair Cut” also for Bailieborough Cancer Comfort Ltd. This “Barbering” will take place on Sept 3^rd in the Square after the Society’s ‘Concra Wood’ outing at around 9pm.  The tight trimming of his flowing, greying locks will assist the Society’s fund raising drive for this vital community service. Donations are going well but if you have not have already donated for this event and worthy cause you can still contribute through “Hall’s Newsagent” and “The Square Bar”. Please donate and bring “Seamie” back to his childhood barbered look!!!

Bailieboro Poetry Competition 2016

Closing date for entries is Wednesday 31st August 2016. First prize of €300 for winning poem with a 2nd prize of €50 to be awarded. There will also be a special prize for a local entrant domiciled in Cavan or Meath. Each poem must not exceed 50 lines, and should be typed, single-spaced. The competition is open to anybody who has reached their 18th birthday. Up to three poems may be submitted per entry. You may submit as many entries as you wish. A fee of €5 per poem or 3 poems for €10 is payable. Payment should be made via the PayPal button. In the case of email entries poems should be submitted as an attachment to an email to competition@bailieboroughpoetry.com. Well done to the Bailieboro Celtic Senior side who started their Division 2 campaign with a well-deserved 3—2 win at home over Rossin Rovers in the Vale Grounds on Friday evening last. Andrew Waller got two and Jake Eager got the third in what was a great team performance for the division 2 newcomers!

Hurling/Camogie Camp;

What a tremendous week! Over 100 boys and girls enjoyed our 3rd annual camp in Bailieborough GAA from Tuesday to Thursday. This was the biggest ever camp so far with boys and girls from the entire region learning new skills in a fun environment. Thanks to all our volunteers, coaches and parents who all contributed to another very successful camp. Thanks to Bailieborough GAA for the use of their fine facilities. Roll on 2017!

The Under 14s had a good win over Woodford in the second round of the Championship on Wednesday last. The next round is away to St. Felim’s this coming Wednesday.

Bailieboro Poetry Competition 2016

Closing date for entries is Wednesday 31st August 2016. First prize of €300 for winning poem with a 2nd prize of €50 to be awarded. There will also be a special prize for a local entrant domiciled in Cavan or Meath. Each poem must not exceed 50 lines, and should be typed, single-spaced. The competition is open to anybody who has reached their 18th birthday. Up to three poems may be submitted per entry. You may submit as many entries as you wish. A fee of €5 per poem or 3 poems for €10 is payable. Payment should be made via the PayPal button. PARISH PILGRIMAGE – LOUGH DERG

The bus will be leaving the St. Anne’s Church Carpark (Virginia Road side) at 7.15am on Monday morning next, 22^nd August and travelling to Lough Derg via Cavan. The cost of the one day retreat is €40 and lasts from 10am to 4pm.  The boat transfer and a light lunch are included in this price and the bus is provided by the parish. The money for the retreat will be collected on the journey down to avoid delays. There will be a stop in Enniskillen for an hour on the way home to give people the chance to eat or just look around and the bus should be back in Bailieborough no later than 8.30pm. East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 15th August 2016

Hurling/Camogie Camp; Just a couple of days to go to our Hurling/Camogie Fun camp in Bailieborough Shamrocks GAA grounds. 9am-1.30 each day Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 16/17/18th August. These camps get bigger and better with each passing year with this year’s promising to be the biggest ever! First child €30, 2 children €50 and 3 children €60. Equipment supplied and all are very welcome from the entire East Cavan catchment area.

Under 6/8/10; Both the Kingscourt and Bailieborough training groups will return to training and games in the weeks following the camp. Watch this space.

 

Under 12/14; The Under 14s went down to a very strong Cootehill side in the first round of the championship on Wednesday last and will look to bounce back with a home game v Woodford Gaels this Wednesday at 7.30 in Bailieborough.

 

Under 16/18; Our Minors put in a very game performance in going down to Cootehill in the Ulster league midweek. The lads played very well and are again improving with each passing game. The next round of minor is Wednesday week v Castleblayney.

Our U16s take on Lisbellaw this coming Saturday also in the Ulster league.

Knockbride Macra Na Feirme host their second annual ‘Mr and Mrs Event’ on Saturday evening next, August 6^th at 8.00pm, in the Bailie Hotel. Doors open at 8.00pm and the show starts at 8.30pm. Cavan Kayakarun

The Cavan Kayakarun Adventure Race takes place this Saturday August 6th at 12 midday starting at Gallonray house Maudabawn with competitors from all over Ireland and overseas it promises to be a great event. Those taking part will run from Gallonray house to Barnagrow Lake where they will kayak around the lake before setting off on the cycle route through parts of Maudabawn, Mountainlodge, Knockbride and Grousehall before returning to the finish at Gallonray house. The organisers would welcome supporters and spectators to cheer the competitors on and appeal to road users to drive safely as the competitors complete their route. Warning signs will be in place.

It’s time once again for the 7^th edition of the Cavan Kayakarun Adventure Race. This year’s event takes place on Saturday next, 6^th of August, at Gallonray House, Maudabawn, Cootehill.

The Junior event for U12-14, U 14-U16 and U 16 –U18 starts at 12 noon

The CKR XL Challenge and the CKR Challenge commence at 1.00pm.

The format for this year remains the same. The XL Challenge starts with a 5k run, followed by a 2k kayak, and then a cross-country run and concludes with a 52 k cycle.

The Challenge event starts with a 5k run, a 1k Kayak and finishes with a 16k cycle.

There is one change to the junior event format. This year it will start with a short Kayak, followed by a 4 k run on a flat circuit and will conclude with a 16 k cycle on a mainly flat course.

The Cavan Kayakarun run is a unique event in this part of the county. Participants in the past have commented on the fun they’ve had taking part in the event and thus the reason why so many continue to return to it year after year. Safety both on road and the water is paramount to the organizers and all routes, junctions and transition areas are well marshaled.

So make a date for a great day’s fun, exercise and competition on Saturday August 6^th. Do it as an individual or maybe even better still as part of a two or three person team.

And if you can, remain on for the post Kayakarun Party on Saturday night in Gallonray House. There will be music and celebration. Meet and make new friends in the sporting and adventure race world.  Everyone’s a winner who takes part. The Cavan Kayakarun is all about the joy of entering. Be part of it this year.

‘Well-Being’ Workshop 

A ‘Well Being’ Workshop will be held in Bailieborough Business Centre on Saturday, August 20^th from 10.00am to 5.00pm. A day of positivity, fun and tips on caring for your Mental Health. August 3rd – Killinkere:  (M) Walk 1 Hour 30 min. (E) Walk 1 Hour. Leaving Bailieborough Library at 7pm. Walk commences at 7.15pm at Killinkere Leisure Centre.

August 10th – Royal Canal Walk, Thomastown, Killucan

Walk 2 + hours (approx) Leaving Bailieborough Library at 6.30pm. Meet at Main Street, Delvin at 7.15pm. Walk commences at Thomastown at 7.30pm. All welcome.

COMPUTER TRAINING PROGRAMME

OUTDOOR ACTIVITY INSTRUCTOR APPLICATIONS

Are now being accepted for an Outdoor Activity Instructor traineeship course run by Cavan and Monaghan ETB in Tanagh Outdoor Education, Dartrey, Co. KNOCKBRIDE LADIES and JUVENILE BOYS COMMITTEE

Family Sports Day at Knockbride football pitch on Sunday next, 7^th August from 2.30pm.  Entry and participation is FREE. There will be novelty races, face painting, fun games, an obstacle course, a competition for Knock bride’s Fittest Family, BBQ and much more (weather dependant). All welcome.

First Trophy of the new season for Bailieboro Celtic A.F.C.

Congratulations to the senior squad on winning the John Sherlock cup with a 3-0 win over a very organised BJD side. Luke Gilsenan open the scoring on the hour assisted by Andrew Waller. Conor Noone got the second assisted by Aaron Cundelan on 73 minutes. Three minutes later Luke Gilsenan finished the scoring assisted by Harry Eager. Conor Noone was named ‘Man of the Match’ and Luke Gilsenan got the Golden Boot. Well done to all the players who took part in the tournament.

Bailieborough Shamrocks GAA

The Shamrocks Golf Society are running a 4 Person Team Event in Virginia Golf Club on the 16th and 17th September 2016 in aid of Bailieborough Cancer Comfort Ltd. Each and every one of us has had a family member, relation or friend who has had to battle cancer and we are just trying to raise money for this wonderful cause.   East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 1st August 2016

Under 6/8/10; All these groups are now on a well-earned summer break. Hurling/ Camogie Fun Camp comes up in August. More info below. Our Under 10 Tournament finals night is scheduled for early September in Kingscourt.

Under 12/14; Training continues every Wednesday in St. Annes Park, Bailieborough GAA at 7. The U14 Hurling Championship begins on 10th August.

Under 16/18; Our minors began the new Ulster league with a defeat to Carrickmacross in Bailieborough on Wednesday last. A good performance from the boys who are still finding their feet at this level.

The first round of the U16 Ulster league begins this week with a home game v St Moninne from Dundalk in St.Annes Park at 7.30. Again all support is very welcome.

Hurling/Camogie Camp;

Keep the following dates for your diary. August 16/17/18th will be for our 2016 Hurling/Camogie Camp. This year it will be held in St. Annes Park, Bailieborough GAA from 9am to 1.30 each day. This camp will be for boys and girls aged 6-16. No previous hurling/camogie experience is required and all equipment will be provided. These camps get bigger and better with each passing year with this year’s promising to be the biggest ever! First child €30, 2 children €50 and 3 children €60.

Hurling training times and venues;

Under 6/8/10; Kingscourt group; No training till end of August after the camp.

Bailieborough group U6/8/10; No training till the end of August after the camp.
