East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 4th June 2018

Monday hurling;

We in this club have spent many, many years advocating for a designated day for hurling activity, which does not clash with other GAA activity, to give all local boys the chance to play both major codes of the Association. After many false dawns we have now reached a point where we now get to get a regular and meaningful schedule of games for our players. With the assistance of Cavan County board and other County Boards we have now, finally, settled on a day which is suitable for all hurling clubs in a number of counties. That day is Monday. Most of our fixtures for our grades from U11/13/15/17 are scheduled for this day and when not playing fixtures we also train on this day. Should we reach a semi-final or final, we may train on a different day in preparation for same.

We respectfully ask our catchment football clubs, of which we have a minimum of nine GFC clubs with players in our ranks, to please leave Monday free for our hurlers to be given the best opportunity to both prepare and play our national game. There are no football fixtures fixed for Monday by the Youth Board in Cavan and no challenge games should be scheduled either. After many years we now have built a platform from where local hurling can develop and it is now, and with the significant cooperation of our GFC clubs, that we can continue to grow. A lot of our catchment clubs have kept Monday free but some, unfortunately, have not, thus putting pressure on players to have to make a choice when they should not be put into this position in the first place. The dual GAA star can thrive in the right environment and we have created that environment, all we ask is that players be given the opportunity. Please keep Monday free for hurling. The payback will be enormous for both codes. Hurling and football can work side by side for the benefit of all. If your players would like some more GAA other than football, then please send them to us on Monday. A huge amount of our local GFC players have hurled up to U10 with us in the past. Let them help us all to a bright future.

Under 7/9/11;

Training Monday in Killann 6.45-8pm. A couple of blitzes in the pipeline coming up soon.

Under 13;

The lads had another impressive win in the Monaghan League on Monday last when they came away from Carrick with a hard earned win. They now play the second round of the Tain League on Monday at Breffni 3G, v Lisbellaw, at 7.30 and then begin final preparations for Feile.

Feile;

Final preparation begin for National Feile na nGael as we head to the shadow of Ben Bulben in Sligo this coming Friday. It, once again, promises to be another great weekend of hurling making new friends and having the great experience that is National Feile. Best of luck to all our significant travelling party of family and friends and supporters and to our team who once again will represent Cavan hurling with pride. Best of luck to management team of Kathryn and Pat. Keep an eye on our Twitter and Facebook for all updates from Sligo.

Bailieborough News. April 30th 2018. Matthew J. Cullen.

Mr. James (Jimmy) Gilsenan.

All within the local community and much further afield were very deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mr. James (Jimmy) Gilsenan, 30 Woodview, Bailieborough. Jimmy—as everyone knew him by—passed away peacefully at Cavan General Hospital on Saturday, April 7th, following a short illness.

Aged 79, Jimmy was born in Annaclue, Bailieborough and was the second son of the late Tom and Maggie Gilsenan. In his younger years, Jimmy attended Ballinamoney N.S. and when he had finished National School, he became an apprentice mechanic with Gibson’s Garage, Adelaide Road. During his teens, Jimmy also drove a lorry for Bailieborough Creamery, drawing milk to the Creamery. In 1960, Jimmy and his future wife Betty, moved to England and he worked as a maintenance man on the London Transport Railway Line. He also drove coaches for the Green Line Coach Company and later on Jimmy was a maintenance fitter for the Corcoran and Conners Company in London. Jimmy and his family returned to Bailieborough in 1979 and in 1980, he commenced work as a fitter in Wellman International Ltd., Mullagh, where he worked until he retired in 1993.

Jimmy had met his wife Betty, when he was drawing milk to the Creamery and they got married in 1962. They lived in Essex and had five children together. Jimmy and Betty lived for their family and they were happiest when their children and grandchildren, came a visiting.

In his spare time, Jimmy had many interests, he was a member of the local Fianna Fail Cumann for over 25 years, he could turn his hands to anything and many were the times when he would help out his many friends and neighbours in their hour of need, he loved doing crosswords and puzzles and he also took great pride in the husbandry of his pool of outdoor goldfish.

In the late 1990’s a group of local people used to go down to the then St. Felim’s Nursing Home in Cavan Town and put on a show every St. Stephen’s Day for the residents there. To raise funds for this and other local charities the group used to put on a show in the Community Centre in Bailieborough around Christmas. The centrepiece of these shows were the comedy acts and Jimmy was one of the stars of these shows, bringing the house down with his hilarious and usually unscripted (or script ignored) antics and “mouthfulls”.

A friendly, kind, family orientated and helpful man, Jimmy will be sadly missed, not only by his family but also by the whole local community and all who had the great pleasure of knowing him.

Jimmy is survived by his wife, Betty, sons: Tommy (Maple Court) and Martin (Woodview), his daughters: Kathleen (Drumkeery), Annie (Dundragon) and Maggie (Woodview), son’s in-law, Kieran and Brendan, daughter’s in-law, Mary and Yvonne, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to whom deepest sympathy is extended.

Jimmy is also survived by his brothers: John (Tierworker), Oliver (England), Raymond (Bailieborough), Alfie (Kingscourt), Dessie (Mayo) Tony (Australia) and sister Kathleen (England), sister’s in-law, brother in-law, nieces, nephews and extended family members.

There was a huge attendance at Clarke’s Funeral Home on Monday evening, April 9th and afterwards, Jimmy’s remains were removed to St. Anne’s Chapel, where the local Fianna Fail Cumann provided a Guard of Honour. Jimmy’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Anne’s on Tuesday morning, April 10th –at which Fr. Michael Router P.P. and Fr. John Cooney officiated—and following which, Jimmy’s remains were laid to rest in Moybologue New Cemetery.

Presentation night; Thanks to everyone who attended our presentation event in the Bailie Hotel on Sunday last with special thanks to Cavan County Board Chairman, Gerry Brady who presented medals and certificates to all of our players. Pics in next week’s news and Facebook during the week.

New training venue; We are delighted to announce that we have secured the community field in Killann for our training and some matches for most of our teams from U11 upwards.
