Bailieborough Heritage Society are delighted that one of our events which took place during Heritage Week 2017 has been shortlisted for the Heritage Awards in the category ‘Heritage Communities’. The awards ceremony takes place in the Heritage Council Kilkenny on April 12th. The shortlisted event is the’ Benny Duffy Photographic’ display organised by Carmel O’Callaghan, we wish Carmel well as she travels to Kilkenny on Thursday for the awards ceremony. It is well deserved recognition of Carmel’s work in putting the exhibition together and of Benny Duffy’s interest in capturing images from the past.

The Niamh Crosby Memorial Bike Run:

The Niamh Crosby Memorial Bike Run Committee would like to thank you all for your support and help at the Run on Easter Sunday last. Nearly 100 bikes of all shapes, makes and sizes took part in this very successful event. To date, in excess of €6,000 has been raised from the event and this would not have been possible without your generous support. Again, many thanks for all your support from Peter, Anna Mai and the Crosby Family.

 

Bailieborough Tidy Towns:

The Annual ‘Spring Clean’ will take place in the town on Saturday, April 28th 2018. Meet at Market Square at 11 am.

Deepest Sympathy:

Eamonn’s Funeral Mass took place on Thursday, April 5^th in St. Anne’s Church, Bailieborough with burial afterwards in St. Anne’s Cemetery.

‘Beauty dies where litter lies’; is the motto on the new Bailieborough Tidy Towns signs erected on all the approach roads into Bailieborough. These new signs are enhanced with the photos of the local environment taken by Kevin Gorman. Killann Parish Pilgrimage to the World Meeting of Families:

This year’s Killann Parish Pilgrimage will be to the World Meeting of Families in the RDS, Ballsbridge, Dublin on Thursday, August 23^rd. Other parishes from the Diocese will be travelling to the event along with Bishop Leo O’Reilly on that day. A bus will be travelling to the RDS from Bailieborough and further details will be announced later. If, however you would like to book a place on the bus, please contact the Parish Office on Mondays and Thursdays from 10am to 3.30pm, Tuesdays from 12pm to 1.30pm and Fridays from 2pm to 6pm. Everyone going that day will also have to register online at www.worldmeeting2018.ie. If you have difficulty doing this, please tell the Parish secretary and they will provide you with assistance. At present, tickets for the Papal Mass in the Phoenix Park on August 26^th are dependent on registering for the World Meeting of Families during the previous week. It is hoped to organise a bus from Bailieborough on that day too.

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 9th April 2018

Presentation night; Thanks to everyone who attended our presentation event in the Bailie Hotel on Sunday last with special thanks to Cavan County Board Chairman, Gerry Brady who presented medals and certificates to all of our players. Pics in next week’s news and Facebook during the week.

New training venue; We are delighted to announce that we have secured the community field in Killann for our training and some matches for most of our teams from U11 upwards. This new facility will give our lads the chance to train together in a neutral venue close to Shercock. We look forward to using it. We still use Kingscourt Stars facility for matches and we are thankful to them for their continued support but this new facility will take the pressure off their main pitch which is very busy.

Under 7/9/11;

Training will remain indoors this week until the ground dries up better, so Thursday in Kingscourt and Friday in Bailieborough. We have a blitz in Carrick close to the end of the month.

Under 13; First league game of the season on Monday v Cootehill in Kingscourt at 6.45. Meeting there at 6.30 sharp.

Under 15; Defeat to Cootehill in the first round of the league last week got the new season up and running. The second round has us at home in Kingscourt to face Monaghan Harps at 6.30 on Monday next 16th April.

Under 17; Cavan Celtic begins in early May for lads on county squad. New Monaghan league for U17 begins in early May with a game away to Carrickmacross.

Opening of Bailieborough Shamrocks New Astro Turf Pitch and Club Rooms:

On Saturday evening last, the Bailieborough Shamrocks celebrated the Official Opening of their Astro Turf Facility and Dressing Rooms. The GAA’s outgoing President and Cavan Native Aogán Ó Fearghaíl officially opened the brand new facilities. Fr. Michael Router P.P., Councillor Paddy McDonald, Cathaoirleach, Cavan County Council and Chairperson of Bailieborough Shamrocks, Senator Joe O’Reilly and local T.D., Niamh Smyth along with a large crowd of local well-wishers and club members were in attendance at this momentous event. The Club wishes to thank everyone who attended and to thank all their Sponsors, players, supporters, mentors and Club members, without whose support this would not have been possible.

Honda Motorcycle RUN:

This Run is in aid of raising funds for ‘The Family Comfort Room’ in St. James’s Hospital, Dublin and is in memory of the late, Niamh Crosby, Curkish, Bailieborough. The Run will take place on Sunday next, the 1st of April. Registration will take place from 10.00am to 12 noon, with a 12.15pm start at Enagh House (located approx. 2kms from Virginia on the Virginia—Bailieborough Road). The run distance is 55miles and the entry fee is €20. All bikes are welcome and light refreshments will be served before and after.

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 26th March 2018

Monday hurling; U11/13/15/17. Most hurling fixtures for 2018, be that Ulster GAA, Monaghan and Cavan GAA will be scheduled for Mondays. Nine counties are beginning to use Monday as their hurling fixtures day this year which is a big step forward for hurling development. We expect all our players ages from U11 upwards to be available to us going forward. There will be no gaelic football fixtures on Monday, as like last year, so we hope many more Gaels who have not had the opportunity to play hurling will now take this chance as there should be no reason not to as Monday will be free from other GAA activity. The dual GAA star is still out there, join us.

Under 6/8/10; Our lads now enjoying the Easter break. We will now start to organise some games locally. Thanks to all who registered so far. It will continue until all are registered. You must be registered to be insured to play hurling.

Under 12/13; Outdoor training will return on Monday 26th March in Kingscourt 7-8pm. This will also act as registration day for all our older players from U11 upwards.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade:

The Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the town will take place on Saturday next, 17th March. The Parade will commence at 2.30pm. This year there will be €1,500 in prizes, prizes for best club, comedy, business, and window display. In an effort to invigorate the parade in our town, we are looking for more help and ideas from you all, we are proposing a special category for clubs in the area with a prize of €500 for best club float or pageant. We’d really appreciate all businesses big or small to put in a float (all entered free). Any ideas please get in touch with any committee member. A ‘Reconciliation Service for Easter’ will take place in St. Anne’s Church, Bailieborough on Sunday, March 25^th (Passion Sunday) at 7.00pm. Confessions will be heard by the Priests of the Pastoral Area as part of a Scripture Service. ‘Honda Run’:

A motorcycle run will take place on Sunday next, March 18^th in aid of raising funds for ‘The Family Comfort Room’ in St. James’s Hospital, Dublin. This run is in memory of the late, Niamh Crosby, Curkish, Bailieborough. Registration will take place from 10.00am to 12 noon, with a 12.15pm start at Enagh House (located approx. 2kms from Virginia on the Virginia—Bailieborough Road). The run distance is 55miles and the entry fee is €20. All bikes are welcome and light refreshments will be served before and after. Moybologue Historical Society:

Dr. Gary Pennington, Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia in Canada is undertaking an ambitious research project called ‘Childhood Memories’. For several years they have been collecting stories from people around the world about their play experiences as children. The goal is to compile a broad database of information about children’s play that will be useful to people in many fields. Plans are to make the results of the study available in book form and on the internet. It is an ambitious effort to chronicle the play of youth over many generations and in different cultures.

While they have thousands of stories from people around the world, as yet they have very few from Ireland. To enhance their work, they would like to have many stories of childhood from the Emerald Isle, particularly from our seniors. They invite the Irish public to participate in the project. In addition to contributing to the study they believe that there are significant personal benefits to people who participate. They encourage respondents to make a copy of their completed form as part of a family history record. They have also found that once people have written their stories that small gatherings to share experiences are very rewarding.

Gary Pennington is from Canada with Mulligan Irish ancestors on his late mother’s side. One of his ancestors is buried in Moybologue Old Graveyard and he has attended several blessings of the graves ceremonies in recent years.

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 12th March 2018

Saint Patricks Day Parades; This year, for the very first time, we will partake in two parades, in Bailieborough, and for the first time, in Kingscourt. We hope as many of our young hurlers will participate, in one or both parades, especially our younger generation. The float is under construction in a secret location. All will be revealed on St. Patricks Day.

Confirmation; Confirmation season is with us again and we wish all our hurlers being confirmed and their families a great day.

Monday hurling; Most hurling fixtures for 2018, be that Ulster GAA, Monaghan and Cavan GAA will be scheduled for Mondays. Nine counties are beginning to use Monday as their hurling fixtures day this year which is a big step forward for hurling development. We expect all our players ages from U11 upwards to be available to us going forward. There will be no Gaelic football fixtures on Monday, as like last year, so we hope many more Gaels who have not had the opportunity to play hurling will now take this chance as there should be no reason not to as Monday will be free from other GAA activity. The dual GAA star is still out there, join us.

Under 6/8/10; Training indoors away from the elements continues in Kingscourt on Thursday and Bailieborough on Friday. Registration this Thursday 15th March in Kingscourt and Friday16th March in Bailieborough. €15 per player or €25 per family. We hope all our player families register with us.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade:

The Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the town will take place on Saturday, 17th March. This year there will be €1,500 in prizes, prizes for best club, comedy, business, and window display. In an effort to invigorate the parade in our town, we are looking for more help and ideas from you all, we are proposing a special category for clubs in the area with a prize of €500 for best club float or pageant. Native Talk are a fresh new Irish band ready to take the scene by storm. Hailing from Carrickmacross Co. Monaghan, this four piece band have some great music to showcase!
The band started as a side project and has since further progressed into something of its own, ‘Native Talk’ is an alternative indie project and is something in which they try to let people relate to..
Their debut single “Hangover” was well received and, along with their latest single “Makes Me Stay” and with plans to release and EP in 2018, they could be ones to watch this year.

​Andy Jones is a Dubliner happily living in Mullagh. He loves flash fiction and was awarded the writer of the year 2017 in Co Roscommon. He has read on RTE’s ‘Sunday Miscellany’.

Grainne Hunt: Originally from Carrickmacross, Grainne’s Irish roots are subtly and beautifully etched in the melodies she writes.
2017 was an extremely busy year for Grainne, which included solo gigs on the West Coast of the US, Berlin, Cologne, Dusseldorf, London, a headline slot at Schottenfest, Vienna, a special guest slot with choir Cantus Domus at Kaltern Fest, Italy, a sold out show at Rathfarnham Castle and the awarding of an Arts Council Travel and Training Grant.
Alongside this she toured extensively with Mark Geary in Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and the US in support of his new album.
Back to Ireland now, she is continuing to work on new material for her second release, due in mid/late 2018.

Christmas Lights Committee:

Bailieborough Christmas Lights Committee wish to thank most sincerely, all those who provided financial support for the 2017 town lights. We also thank the many volunteers who gave freely of their time to assemble, erect and take down the lights.

Irish Blood Transfusion Service:

The Mobile Unit of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service will be in attendance at Bailieborough Community School on Wednesday, February 14^th from 5.00pm to 8.30pm. All previous donors are invited to attend and new donors are especially welcome.

 

Saint Vincent de Paul Shop Conference:

We wish to sincerely thank the students, staff and parents of the Community School and all the local primary schools for the very generous donations of hampers, money and goods to the Conference over the Christmas period.  We can assure you that many people in our community are benefiting greatly from your generosity.

 

First Communion Preparation Mass:

The children in second class in St. Annes, St. Felims and the Model School, who will be receiving First Holy Communion this year, along with their parents and guardians will take part in the 10.00am Mass on Sunday next, February 18^th in St. Annes Church.

Bailieborough Social Day Group:

The meeting of the Social Day Group was cancelled last week due to the cold weather but will now take place on Wednesday, February 14^th from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, in the Community Centre. All members old and new are most welcome to attend.

 

Public Information Meeting:

A Public Information Meeting on the ‘Irish Constitution and the 8^th Amendment’ will take place on Thursday, February 22^nd at 8.30pm, in St. Anne’s Community Centre, Chapel Road. A panel of speakers and video presentation will be followed by refreshments. This is an ideal opportunity to understand what is proposed by the Government in the forthcoming referendum.

 

Deepest Sympathy:Deepest Sympathy is extended to Mrs. Sue Sheanon and family, Virginia Road, on the recent death of her brother, John Sheridan, Beagh, Killinkere. John’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Ultan’s Church, Killinkere, on Wednesday, February 7^th, with burial afterwards in St. Ultan’s Cemetery, Killinkere.

Cavan. Eileen passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 3^rd, at home surrounded by her loving family. Eileen’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Michael’s Church, Cootehill on Tuesday, February 6^th with burial afterwards in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Cootehill.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade:

The Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the town will take place on Saturday, 17th March. This year there will be €1,500 in prizes, prizes for best club, comedy, business, and window display. Weekday Masses during Lent:

The season of Lent begins today, Wednesday, February 14^th. The Parish Pastoral Council decided to have two early Masses each week during the season at 8.00am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Masses on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays will be at the normal times.

Stations of the Cross: The Stations of the Cross will take place during Lent immediately after the 7.00pm Mass on Friday, 16^th February, 23^rd February, 2^nd March, 9^th March, 16^th March and 23^rd March.

 

Bridge:

Bridge takes place every Tuesday evening in the Hotel Bailie at 8.00pm. New members are always most welcome.

Birdwatch Ireland is hosting a training session for surveying in Cavan. If you feel that it is something you might like to get involved in, please read the information and follow the link below to register.

The session is a joint CBS/I-WeBS training day. Its aim is to try and recruit some new survey participants and also to give existing surveyors a chance to come along and share experiences.

24^th March (Sat): Farnham Arms Hotel, Cavan.

Both these surveys are long-term projects and very important tools for monitoring how our breeding birds and wetland sites are faring. As a certain level of identification skill is required to carry out the two surveys (and for CBS you would need to be pretty familiar with songs and calls of a good range of our common and widespread species) we suggest you have a look at these two lists below:

CBS list: (by sight & sound): Mistle Thrush, Blackcap, Redpoll, Willow Warbler, Sedge Warbler, Reed Bunting, Dunnock, Treecreeper. And by sight only: Merlin and Whinchat.

I-WeBS list: (by sight only): Wigeon, Teal, Tufted Duck, Goldeneye, Pochard, Knot, Dunlin, Bar-tailed Godwit, Black-tailed Godwit, Greenland White-fronted Goose.

If you could readily identify a minimum of 7 of these CBS or I-WeBS species in the field, then you should be OK. If you have trouble with them, then perhaps these sessions (and these surveys) will be a bit too advanced for you.

The Countryside Bird Survey (CBS) is carried out between 1^st April and 30^th June. It involves two early morning walks to count birds in a 1km square – the work is done by 9 AM!

The Irish Wetland Bird Survey (I-WeBS) is carried out from September to March. Estuaries, lakes, marshes and other wetlands across the country are counted once a month during the autumn, winter and early spring.

Each session will have the same format, starting at 10.00hrs with an entertaining slide show explaining how and why we do these surveys and there will be lots of tips on identification. After lunch (provided), we will have a short outdoor field trip to give you a chance to put theory into practice. We will be finished around 15.30hrs. The sessions are very relaxed and easy going, but also, we hope, informative. All instruction, tea, coffee, biscuits and lunch are free.
