All-Ireland One Act Qualifier for Bailieborough Drama Group

‘The Sacred Heart’s Right Hand Man” by Liz O’Hanlon, directed by Conor Sheridan, has qualified for the All-Irelands to be held in the Mill Theatre, Dundrum, Dublin. A warm up will be shown in Gallonray House, Maudabawn this Wednesday 30th November at 8:30pm. Stand-up comedy will be brought on the night by Pat and Liam Daly and Phelim Gargan. Entrance fee €10 and all are most welcome.

Leanne Does it again!!: Well done to local girl, Leanne Kiernan who made her Senior International debut for the Republic of Ireland when they played a friendly against the Basque Country in Tallaght on Saturday afternoon last. Leanne put in a ‘Player of the Match’ performance and to cap it all, she scored her first Senior International goal to give the Republic a 2—1 win! The goals keep on coming for Leanne and hopefully she will play a big part in Shelbourne’s game against U.C.D. Waves tonight (Wednesday) in what could be a title deciding game.

 

Bailieborough Community Choir

The Bailieborough Community Choir are holding their first ever fund raiser on Friday, December 2^nd in Foxes Bar, Main Street, Bailieborough. This will be a Fund Raising Quiz which will commence at 9.00pm, sharp. A table of 4 will cost 40 euro and all are most welcome to attend.

Deepest Sympathy: Deepest Sympathy is extended to brother Tony, nephews, nieces and extended family, neighbours and friends on the death of Margaret (Maggie) Clarke, Moylett, Bailieborough, who passed away on Thursday, November 17^th, peacefully at her residence. Maggie’s Funeral Mass took place in St Mary’s Church, Clanaphilip on Saturday, November 19^th with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

Deepest Sympathy is extended to sons PJ and Denis, daughters Mary, Nuala, Rose, Martina, Colette, Geraldine, Claire and Carmel, daughter-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended relatives and friends on the death of Eileen Martin (nee Carroll) and formerly Clarke, Monaghanoose, Bailieborough, who passed away peacefully, at her residence in the loving care of her family in her 92nd year on Sunday, November 20^th. Eileen’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Anne’s Church, Bailieborough on Tuesday, November 22^nd with burial afterwards in St. Anne’s Cemetery.

A ‘Moonlight Walk’ will take place on Friday, December 9^th in aid of the Tierworker Defibrillator Fund. Meet at the Royal Breffni, Tierworker at 7.15pm. Please bring a torch and wear suitable footwear. There will be a short walk and a longer one on Lough An Lae. Donations are voluntary and there will be refreshments afterwards in the Royal Breffni. Incredible news that our own Jack Barry was first of all nominated but then went on to win Cavan Hurler of the year at the Sheridan Insurances award night on Friday last. A great individual award for Jack, who is still U16, for his consistent outstanding performances in the Celtic Challenge U17 inter-county competition for Cavan, picking up numerous player of the game awards along the way as well as great performances in the Cavan U16 championship, Ulster U16 league and Ulster minor league.

A first individual playing award to an East Cavan Gaels player also. Everyone in the club is rightly proud of this great achievement.

Under 6/8/10;

Training continues each week in Kingscourt on Thursdays and Bailieborough on Fridays. Great enthusiastic numbers at both our U6/8 sessions which bodes well for the New Year. We’ve lost some blitzes to bad weather but training will continue till mid-December.

Under 12/14; Again we lost Friday’s first round U13 on the 3G to frost. Hopefully this competition will be completed before the Christmas break.

Under 16/18; With time now against us and fixtures piling up the minor competition will be run off on a one day blitz format on Saturday December 3rd on the 3G. Good luck to all.

Bailieboro Parish Church Funds—Fundraiser—presents CONAL GALLEN:

Irish comedian and singer, Conal Gallen will be coming to perform in the Bailie Hotel on Friday next, 18th November 2016 at 8:30pm. Funds raised will go towards Bailieborough Parish Church. Bailieborough Drama Group

Bailieborough Drama Group are back on the Drama Festival one-act circuit. Their play is written by local girl, Liz O’ Hanlon (nee Byrne) called “the Sacred Hearts Right Hand Man”. She acts alongside Darragh Smith. The show has got Best Play and Best Director (Conor Sheridan) in Moate, Co. Westmeath on Saturday, 29^th October. In the Cavan one-act Festival, the group won Best Play, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Actor. The group would need another 1st to secure a place in the All-Ireland in December in Dundrum, Co. Dublin. The play will be performed in Carrigallan on Sunday next, 20th.

Jiving Lessons

Bailieborough Shamrocks GAA Club would like to thank all the parents who made sandwiches and cakes and brought them to our Medal Presentation in the Community School on Saturday evening. The Club would like to thank one person in a very, very big way and that is our Photographer on the night Bairbre Ni Uidhir who captured the whole joyous evening in an array of photos.

From everyone’s generosity we had a fantastic spread at the event. To all the ladies who served us all tea and food we thank you sincerely and also we would like to thank Francis Clarke for supplying the milk. Your help and participation in this event made the night a great social occasion for everyone associated with Bailieborough Shamrocks GAA Club. The surplus food and cakes that were left over after the event was donated to St Vincent De Paul and we also brought some of the food and cakes out to Killinkere to the BDA who were running their hugely successful concert with The Celtic Tenors and Guests.

An Art Exhibition by artist, Josephine Tracey is taking place upstairs in Bailieborough Library until the end of November. The exhibition has a mixture of Weave work, Embroidery and Oil Painting Landscapes. The Exhibition is open during Library opening hours and all are most welcome to attend and view it.

Drumkeery Group Water Scheme

Drumkeery Group Water Scheme will be carrying out the biannual maintenance work on the network, which will include scouring of the lines. This may cause some disruption to member’s water supply. If discolouration of the water occurs, run the tap until the water becomes clear. Maintenance work will be carried out until Saturday, 30^th November. East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 14th November 2016

Under 6/8/10; Training returned indoors on Thursday last in Kingscourt Community Centre. Friday’s foul weather conditions made it unsafe to travel for our Bailieborough training group so they will get going this coming Friday. New players very welcome.

Under 10 monster blitz this coming Wednesday in Ballyjamesduff secondary school hall.

Under 12/14; The U13 competition will begin this Friday 18th November on the 3G. Two rounds with the finals on 2nd December.

Under 16/18; Under 16 Championship final.

Cootehill 6-07

East Cavan Gaels 2-06

Definitely a case of what might have been on Wednesday in Breffni. An excellent display by our lads who are a mixture of only 4 16 year olds with a sprinkling of 13/14 year old lads. A very nasty head injury to Cillian Traynor coupled with the 2 goals that followed while a man down was ultimately our undoing on the night. Our defence while under some serious pressure delivered a serious performance led by Cian. The midfield area grabbed a good foothold in the game with Jack, Cillian, Seamus and Kevin putting in a serious shift to lay the platform. Unfortunately we are still very young in the forward department and the older physical presence of the Cootehill lads kept most of our attacks at bay but we still created a load of chances.

Cillian’s injury made the second half that bit more difficult but credit to our lads for sticking with Cootehill where they scored 3-04 to our 2-04. We are getting closer each year. Well done to all.

The Revd. Ian Horner Appointed as Rector of Bailieborough Group of Parishes

The Revd. Ian Horner has been appointed as Rector of the Bailieborough Group of Parishes in the Diocese of Kilmore, Elphin and Ardagh.  He has been the Curate of the Bailieborough Group since August 2014.

Ian is originally from Greystones in Co. Wicklow.  Having earned qualifications in Business Management and in Sound Engineering and Music Technology he went to work for The Leprosy Mission Ireland.  Following that he spent 5 years as Youth and Children’s Coordinator at Kill O’ The Grange Parish in Dublin.  Having felt God’s call to ministry he started training in 2011, and was ordained as Presbyter in 2014 after completing placements in Christ Church Bray, Christ Church Wharton (Cheshire, UK), and the Parish of Powerscourt with Kilbride, and serving as Deacon in Greystones Parish.

Ian is married to Jenny and they have two sons, Sam (3) and Leo (1).  In his spare time he enjoys music and football.  He and his family are looking forward to continuing to journey with the people of Bailieborough, Mullagh, Shercock and Knockbride.

Ian’s Institution will take place at in Bailieborough Parish Church on Sunday 27th November at 7pm. All welcome.

Congratulations and Well Done

Congratulations and Well Done to local girl, Leanne Kieran who scored a hat-trick in the Continental Tyres Women’s Senior Cup Final for Shelbourne Ladies in the Aviva Stadium on Sunday last. Leanne—who also starred in the Ladies Under 19 International Side in their recent tournament in Skopje—was also awarded the ‘Woman of the Match’ Award for her display in the 5-0 comprehensive win over Wexford Youths. A very big crowd turned out at the Market Square on Sunday evening to welcome 17 year old Leanne home and although it was a bitterly cold evening, Leanne happily posed for all the photos of the town’s latest sporting success. Thank you to the hundreds of people who came out to support Leanne Kiernan ! Enrolment for Confirmation

The students in sixth class in St. Anne’s N.S. and St. Felim’s N.S. will be enrolled for Confirmation at the 7.00pm Mass in St. Annes on Saturday evening next, November 12^th.

The students in second class in both schools and in the Model School will be enrolled for the First Communion preparation programme at the 10.00am Mass on Sunday, November 20^th.

The Bailieborough Community Choir are holding their first ever fund raiser on Friday, December 2^nd in Foxes Bar, Main Street, Bailieborough. This will be a Fund Raising Quiz which will commence at 9.00pm, sharp. A table of 4 will cost 40 euro and all are most welcome to attend.

Bailieborough Drama Group

Bailieborough Drama Group are back on the Drama Festival one-act circuit. Their play is written by local girl, Liz O’ Hanlon (nee Byrne) called “the Sacred hearts right hand man”. She acts alongside Darragh Smith. The show has got Best Play and Best Director (Conor Sheridan) in Moate, Co. Westmeath last Saturday, 29^th October. In the Cavan one-act Festival last weekend, the group won Best Play, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Actor. The group would need another 1st to secure a place in the All-Ireland in December in Dundrum, Co. Dublin. The play will be performed in Mullagh on Thursday 10th, Manorhamilton on Saturday the 12th and Carrigallan on Sunday20th.

Car Parking around St. Anne’s Church

Those visiting the Church and particularly those attending Church Services are asked to park only in the bays provided and not in the middle of the avenues. Please do not abandon cars on the avenues as they are needed for ordinary and emergency access and deliveries. The bays nearest the Church are for cars with disabled permits and can only be used during Service times by those with such permits.

Under 10 monster blitz this coming Tuesday in the old Army Barracks Cavan 7-8.15pm.

Under 12/14; The U13 competition will begin 18th November on the 3G. Two rounds with the finals on 2nd December.

Under 16/18; Our U16s had a fantastic result with victory over St. Felim’s in the Championship semi-final on the 3G on Wednesday last. All roads lead to Breffni 3G again this coming Wednesday where they will take on defending champions Cootehill in what promises to be a cracking encounter in the final. Throw in is a 7pm and all support is very welcome.

Bailieborough Tidy Towns Group met and a new Bailieborough Tidy Town’s Committee has been formed.

OCTOBER – MONTH OF THE ROSARY

The Rosary will be said for the remainder of the month of October at the Grotto on the Virginia road at 7.30pm every evening except Saturdays. Everyone welcome to come and pray for all intentions.

Deepest Sympathy

Deepest Sympathy is extended to son Mervyn, daughter in-law Susan, grandchildren Michael, Mervyn and India, sisters Evelyn and Lil, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces and extended family and friends on the death of Mervyn’s father Raymond Lloyd, Curkish and late of Main Street, Bailieborough,  who passed away at Fairlawns Nursing Home, on Tuesday, October 11^th, 2016.  For many years, Raymond was one of the town’s best known and liked businessmen who ran ‘McElwaines Hardware’ on Main St. along with his late wife Pearl. Raymond always had a welcoming smile and was never too busy to stop and have a friendly chat with all of his many customers. Raymond was also a very well-known and respected member of the Bailieborough Branch of the Irish Red Cross to whom he gave over 50 years of committed service. In Raymond’s passing, Bailieborough has lost another one of its cherished and admired people. Raymond’s Funeral Service took place in Bailieborough Parish Church on Friday afternoon, October 14^th following which his remains were laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Deepest Sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of Marjorie Fitzgerald (née Coote), Virginia Road, Bailieborough (wife of the late Dessie) and St Joseph’s Nursing Home, Virginia, Co. Cavan who died on Friday, October 14^th. Marjorie’s Funeral Service took place in Bailieborough Parish Church on Sunday, October 16^th with interment in the adjoining cemetry

Congratulations and Well Done

Congratulations and Well Done to local girl, Leanne Kiernan, who was a member of the Republic of Ireland Women’s Under 19 squad that took part in the European Under 19 qualifiers in Skopje last week. In the first game against Macedonia, Leanne scored 4 goals in what turned out to be a comprehensive 10—0 win for the Republic. In the girls second game against Wales, Leanne scored both goals in a two nil win. Leanne played the full game on Sunday against favourites Italy and although she did not score, she played a full part in a noteworthy 2—0 win for the Republic. These results ensure that the team qualifies for the Elite Round of qualifying for the UEFA European Championships due to be held early next year. Well done Leanne, you have made your home town and country proud of you!

Mountainlodge Tractor Run

The proceeds of the recent very successful tractor run will be presented to Multiple Sclerosis Cavan Branch at a social in McCabe’s, Mountainlodge on this Saturday, 29^th October. Participants on the run had come from the Bailieborough / Cootehill / Laragh area with over 160 vehicles entered. There will be music, refreshments and spot prizes.

At the same event the draw for the 1965 Vintage Massey 135 will take place. This will be the culmination of the summer fund raising effort by Norman Wilson to benefit cancer charities including the Irish Cancer Society Cancer Research Programme, Cavan/Monaghan Palliative Care, Oncology Unit Cavan General and Cootehill cancer Support.

Under 6/8/10; Indoor hurling is now up and running in both Kingscourt on Thursdays and Bailieborough on Fridays with the new Under 10/11 session on the astro at the Vale on Sunday mornings. Training times below. New players always very welcome from the entire region. This is the perfect time to try hurling with us as we have lots of new players joining. We have indoor hurling all the way to May 2017! Monster blitzes coming up in November.

Under 12/14; Our under 14s went down to a very large St.Feilims squad in the Championship Shield Final on Wednesday last. Some good performances from our boys a lot of whom are still only U12.

Under 16/18; Our Minors gave a very positive first half display against Cootehill in the Championship on Saturday last but it wasn’t enough to deny the champions. Injuries and studies robbed us of what would have been a fuller squad but the lads who played cannot be faulted for their efforts.

Bailieborough Heritage Society

Presents ‘The Lily and the Poppy’ a joint presentation by Philip Orr, historian of the Great War and author of ‘Field of Bones an Irish Division at Gallipoli’ and Joe Austin former Belfast City Councillor and life-long Republican. Both men will outline the significance of these emblems to their respective communities.

The event takes place this Thursday night October 13th in Bailieborough Library commencing at 7.30pm. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Brendan was very well known in the community having had an insurance agency business at Thomas Street, Bailieborough for many years. He was also very involved with the local branch of the Irish Red Cross—an organisation that he served with distinction for over 50 years at both local and national level. Brendan was also involved with the local branch of RehabCare and throughout the years, he was also involved with many other local voluntary organisations. Always one with a ready smile, time for a friendly chat and willingness to lend a hand, Brendan’s presence within the community will be deeply missed. Brendan’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Annes on Sunday, October 2^nd with burial afterwards in St. Anne’s Cemetery.

Agnes’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Annes on Monday, October 3^rd with burial afterwards in St. Anne’s Cemetery.

OCTOBER – MONTH OF THE ROSARY

The Rosary will be said for the month of October at the Grotto on the Virginia road at 7.30pm every evening except Saturdays. Everyone welcome to come and pray for all intentions.

Baptism – Baptism Preparation Meeting for Parents

The second Thursday of each month in the Parish Centre (Parochial House beside St. Anne’s Church) from 8pm to 9pm. The next meeting is on Thursday, October 13^th. All parents who are intending to have their child baptised are required to attend this meeting before finalising the date. Parents are reminded to give at least one month’s notice of their intention to have their child baptised to 087-4407990.

Mountainlodge Tractor Run

: The Mountain Lodge Tractor Run will take place on Sunday next, 16th of October.  Funds in aid of MS Ireland Cavan Branch.  Old or new tractors and vintage cars welcome. Registration from 10.30am to 11.30am.  Run starting at McCabe’s, Mountain Lodge at 12pm to be at Tullyvin by 1 to 1.30pm, pass through Cootehill around 3pm and then back to Mountain Lodge for 4.30pm. ST. ANNE’S N.S. HALLOWEEN FAMILY FUN/RUN, WALK

CAVAN/MONAGHAN PALLIATIVE CARE

‘Hardtimes Chorus’ will be taking their show to St Bridget’s Church in Laragh, helping to raise funds for Cavan/ Monaghan Palliative care on Friday next, 14^th October at 8.30pm sharp.  Admission by ticket only.  Cost €15.  Tickets can be reserved by calling 086- 2597617 or purchased in Bailie Stores, Bailieborough. A great night’s entertainment. Bailieborough Library Parent, Baby and Toddler Group has proven to be a vital life line for all stay-at-home parents who may be new to the area and wish to get out of the house and make new friends. There is a huge range of toys for children to play with, while parents can enjoy a cup of tea and chat.

The group meets at the Library Arts space every Wednesday at 10.30am-12pm. Why not join their Facebook Group and keep up to date with news and events.

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 9th October 2016

Under 6/8/10; Indoor hurling is now up and running in both Kingscourt on Thursdays and Bailieborough on Fridays with the new Under 11 session on the astro at the Vale on Sunday mornings. Training times below. New players always very welcome.

Under 12/14; The Under 14 Championship Shield Final is this coming Wednesday v St. Felim’s on the 3G at Breffni at 7pm. Another chance for a piece of silverware.

Under 16/18; Just the Cavan Championships remain for these two sides. Dates tbc.
