Poetry Town: Schedule of Events: Town Poem Unveiling:

Poetry Town runs across 20 chosen towns in Ireland from the 10th  to the 18th of September 2021. This is the inaugural year of this celebration of poetry and County Cavan was lucky enough to have two towns, Bailieborough and Cootehill taking part.

The following is the schedule of events for Bailieborough:

Mairéad Donnellan, will read her specially written poem, commissioned by Poetry Ireland, during the Poetry Town event, at a gathering in the Bailie Hotel, on Thursday, September 16th, from 7-9pm. Readings by other local poets and music.

This short piece will be filmed in Bailieborough and will include several guests poets and figures from the area.

The film will be set to music especially written for the poem and scenes will be from areas in the town and nearby beauty and heritage spots.

Pocket Poems: Bailieborough Creative Hub: From 10 September: On Instagram, film shown locally and printed poems.

Pocket poems is about 12 poets from Bailieborough Creative Hub reading local work from different locations in the town area.

These are available on Instagram as separate readings posted each day between 10th -18th  September, and as a complete film to be shown locally during Culture week/weekend in Bailieborough Credit Union/Bailie Hotel.

The poems will also be available in hard copy printed booklets from 10 September – given to all businesses and handed out to the community on Culture Night (17th  September) at 6pm.

Kate Ennals—Reading/Open Mic: Saturday, 11th  September 3-5pm (TBC). Bailie Hotel, Bailieborough (outdoor dining area).

Kate Ennals (known for Over the Edge Sessions in Cavan) will invite two Northern poets (TBC) to join her in a reading/open mic poetry session to mark Culture Week on Saturday, 11th  September 2021. Kate will then host an open mic session for the community. A music interlude by Elena Duff will add to the performance!

Poetry Underfoot: 10-18 September: Around the town.

For once, let’s hope that it rains!

When you’re out and about in your town after a rain shower, look down. Lines of poetry will appear…as if by magic.

New Mural in the Playground: Congratulations to all the young people involved in curating and producing the stunning new mural advocating positive Mental Health, which has recently been erected in our local playground to remind our children the importance of good mental health. Thank you to the local Foroige young workers Alma McCabe and Sharon Ivers working alongside our local Gardai in the community – Juvenile Liason Officer, Garda Edel Gilliland, Garda Ciara Logue, Garda Sarra Hadi, Student Garda Lorna Reilly and Garda Lisa Stephens. Congratulations to artist Elaine Agnew for her curatorial work on this project and to Henry Rogers for his constant help in the local community and in particular placing this beautiful piece of artwork in the playground ably assisted by Martin Brady. Cavan Foroige District Council

St. Annes: Temporary Curate for the Parish: Bishop Martin Hayes has decided to appoint a temporary Curate to the Parish, who will be based in Shercock.  Fr. Peter Okpetu—who is currently working in Cavan Parish—will come to Killann Parish from the beginning of September until Christmas. It is hoped that another Priest will then take over from January until Easter 2022. The Bishop would like to make a more permanent appointment to Shercock next summer and hopefully that will come to pass. Without a Priest based in Shercock, the pastoral area of Killann, Knockbride and Kilmainhamwood and Moybologue cannot function. The extra Priest in Shercock means that there is an extra man who can provide cover in the surrounding Parishes in the event of sickness, at holiday time and when the unanticipated occurs.

For the time being, it will be great to have the help and support of Fr. Peter from September until Christmas. We hope he will receive a warm welcome when he arrives. His generosity in agreeing to move from Cavan for three months during the Parish’s time of need is much appreciated by Fr. Ultan.

Bailieborough Tidy Towns: Great work being done around the town by this very commited group of people. The Tidy Towns have planted and maintained hanging baskets, pots, roundabouts and approach roads to the town flowering beds.

East Cavan Gaels: Mid season report!

A good time to update our season so far.

The Under 7 and under 9s did great work outside and are now on a well earned break. These lads have a had a great time with their friends learning the game.

The Under 11s have made great strides while getting some good games under their belt. The skill levels have improved immensely.

The Under 13s have been very competitive in the Tàin league and continue their development.

Seven men on the county U17 squad is just reward for the work these lads, and Pat, have put in.

Our Seniors are, again, showing great improvement. Games that were lost before are now very competitive with the odd draw and win helping to keep all motivated with Championship around the corner.

Jack Barry flies the flag for East Cavan Gaels on the county senior side that’s having it’s best season in over a decade. More East Cavan Gaels men will join him in future we are sure of it.

There is a team in this club for you no matter your age or ability. Come join us. The fun is only beginning

Bailieborough News. July 5th 2021 . Matthew J. Cullen.

Nahyan’s ‘High 5’, Bailieborough:  We are trilled to let you all know that the figure raised for Nahyan’s High 5 Bailieborough event was a MASSIVE €6,384.30!

Nahyan’s High 5 campaign has been up and running 9 weeks or so and we wanted to spread awareness and raise a little money for his fund but with everyone’s help we completely excelled this…We were thinking we could have a little Bake Sale and Shaun added in the Teddy bear hunt and we went from that to a very successful day. To see the excitement on the kids faces made all the hard work worthwhile.

We want to say a massive ‘Thank You’ to everyone who helped out, in any way. There are so many we can’t name everyone. We were completely blown away by the support. From the outstanding bakers, the businesses and indivuduals who donated fabulous raffle prizes, the people who designed our posters, those who printed them for us, the volunteers who helped out organising the event and on the day, to our face painters, our photographers, bubbles for the balloon displays….so so many lent a hand.

Massive thanks to the play centre for joining us with their characters for the event.

Finally thanks to each and every person who joined the event, bought bakes, made donations, bought raffle tickets etc. Those who made donations as they couldn’t be there… We thank you all deeply.

The final figure includes money raised from Precision embroidery competition, outdoor fitness class with Marlena, donations from McHugh ice cream van and Sinclair Pantry who both joined us on the day. Also a donation from Peter Crosby from a raffle he ran for a Honda 50.

St. Annes:  Parish Schedule: Now that Fr. Rafal has returned home, Fr. Ultan is the only Priest in the Parish. This will be the case for the next few months. We hope and pray that Fr. Rafal will be replaced in the Autumn. Meanwhile we must manage.

During this time, it will be helpful if people contact the Parish Office during office hours to book Masses and to have Mass cards signed and to conduct ordinary Parish business. Mass bookings and all other business connected with Shercock and Killann will be managed through the Parish Office in Bailieborough. The Parish Office will be open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10am to 1.15pm and 2.15pm to 4.00pm. Please feel free to contact Fr. Ultan for assistance on 087 341 8037 or 042 96 65117 or email: bailieboro@kilmorediocese.ie

There will be no weekday Masses in St. Patrick’s Church, Shercock for the time being, but a regular Communion Prayer Service will be arranged shortly.

We especially encourage our young families to get back into the habit of coming to Mass. It will do us a power of good to be together and to worship God together as a community of Faith.

The Bishop has granted permission for the resumption of Baptisms, with a limited attendance confined to parents and godparents.

Mass can be heard on the radio at 107.8FM in the Bailieborough area and 92FM in Shercock.

All Masses and Parish Funerals can be viewed on the Parish webcam or can be heard by tuning in the radio to 107.8 F.M.
