Bailieborough Tidy Towns: Clean up / Litter pick day on Saturday, April 6th .

We hope to litter pick on all approach roads to the town, if we have enough volunteers. This is your chance to clean up your own road or area. Meet at the Library at 10.30am.

Wear a high vis vest and bring a litter picker if you have one. All volunteers welcome.

Deepest Sympathy: John Joe Cooney, Lurganbawn, Bailieborough, Co Cavan passed away on Sunday,  24th  March 2024 peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, in the wonderful care of the staff in the ICU at Cavan General Hospital.

John Joe will be deeply regretted by his loving wife Anna, beloved father of Kathleen, Breda, Noeleen, Pauline, P.J., Geraldine, Annette and Declan, sons-in-law Seamus, Brian, Joe and Ciarán, daughter-in-law Niamh, cherished grandchildren Ciara, Laoise, Darragh, Eve, Séan, Anna, Tara, Aisling, Dylan, Cathy, Christopher, Fionn, John Joe, Shane, Angela and Patrick, his treasured niece Ann Tierney, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

John Joe’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Annes Church, Bailieborough on Wednesday, March 27th and afterwards, John Joe’s remains were laid to rest in St. Anne’s Cemetery.

Regretted Death: Nicholas (Nick) Smith, Killann, Shercock, Co. Cavan passed away on Wednesday  27th  March 2024, peacefully surrounded by his family at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda in his 92nd  year. Nicholas was predeceased by his wife Pauline, his brothers and sister.

Sadly missed by his loving daughter Rosemarie, son-in-law Vincent, his adored grandchildren Dylan and Laura, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends.

 A Funeral Liturgy for Nicholas took place in St. Annes Church, Bailieborough on Saturday, March 30th and afterwards, Nicholas’s remains were laid to rest in St. Annes Cemetery.

Bailieborough Library: Book Club: Next meeting is on Tuesday, April 30th  at 6.30pm and the book for discussion will be  ‘A Spool of Blue Thread’ by Anne Tyler and is now available at the Library desk. New members are always welcome!

Tractor, Car and Bike Run: A Tractor, car and bike run will take place on Sunday, April 14th at 3.00pm,, leaving from Killann Football pitch. Registration will take place from 1.30pm. Proceeds to works being done on Killann pitch dressing rooms and toilets. €20 entry. Please support.

Darkness into Light, Bailieborough: ‘Darkness into Light’, Bailieborough will take place on the morning of Saturday, May 11th at 4.15am. There are lots of ways to get involved. Senior; Our club Seniors, minus the county men, will begin their competitive season next Sunday as they travel to Newry for the opening round of the spring league. Best wishes to them for the season ahead.

The county Seniors prepare for the Lory Meagher Cup with the first round against newly crowned NHL 3B champions Warwickshire, in what will be a very competitive opener in two weeks time in Kinsgspan Breffni.

County U20s prepare for All Ireland C semi final in early May v Monaghan.

County U17s preparing for Celtic Challenge.

Membership; Thanks to all who have ensured their membership is up to date for the year ahead. It is very much appreciated.

U8/10/12/14/16/18; All enjoying the Easter break before we go headlong into another busy season for all. U15s are with the county on Monday afternoon with games coming up for them in the Hibernia Cup.

Our U16s will start the season with a trip to Monaghan to play St.McCartons on April 8th.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade: A huge thank you to everyone that volunteered, donated and participated in the parade – it’s always great to see such a strong community spirit. Despite the inclement weather, the Bailieborough St. Patrick’s Day Parade attracted large crowds to view it. Local man, Shane McCloskey provided the pre-parade entertainment and M.C. for the day—Paddy Sheanon, kept the crowds amused  with his running commentary! This year, the Parade was more focused on the community, with many local groups and clubs participating. Also, a very welcome addition to the Parade was the visiting ‘New Life Choir’  Abaana—twenty children from Uganda—who provided uplifting singing in the dreary conditions. Irish Dancing, Rythmic Dance Twirlers, East Cavan Swimming Club, St. Annes N.S., the local Taekwondo Club, Bailieborough Tidy Towns, the local G.A.A. Hurling and Soccer Clubs were all very well represented in the Parade. Some lovely vintage cars and tractors were also there and all in all, it was a very good parade.

Congratulations to this years winners: Best Window – Clarke’s Albany,  Best Comedy Float – The Playcentre Kingscourt, Best Club – Taekwondo Club and Best Commercial Float – Mortimer Shopfitting.

 Also a special ‘Thank You’ to all the people involved in organising and marshalling the Parade. Well done !!

Palm Sunday and Holy Week: Next Sunday is Palm Sunday. Blessed Palm will be available at all Masses in St. Annes. Fresh Easter Water will be available on Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. Please begin returning the Trocaire envelopes.

Confessions for Easter: Individual Confessions will take place in St. Annes on Tuesday, March 26th from 7—8pm and on Holy Saturday from 12—1pm.  A Communal Reconcilation Service will take place in Virginia on Thursday, March 21st at 7.30pm.

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club:East Cavan Gaels Hurling Club News 18th March 2024: Senior; NHL 3A , Cavan 2-13, Monaghan 0-13.

Another fabulous result for the County side as the win secures higher level hurling for 2025 and qualification for a semi final v Sligo next weekend. Happy days indeed and our clubmen again to the fore. Long may it last!

Cavan U20s now prepare for their All Ireland Championship which will be a semi final v the winners of the Longford/ Monaghan on the first weekend of April.

Our Seniors will return to training this coming Thursday 21st March on the astro at Bailieboro Celtic at 8pm as the Spring League fast approaches.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade: All floats welcome : Vintage cars, bikes,  tractors,

Comedy floats, Sports clubs,  All Business Floats, Entry of floats is FREE of charge.

Great chance to promote your business club etc on Sunday next, March 17th, commencing at 2.30pm. All floats are asked to assemble on the Virginia Road at 1.30pm.

P rizes to be awarded:  Best Comedy Float €500,  Best Club €300, Best Commercial Float €200 and there will also be a prize for the Best Window. There will also be a Marching Band, Comedy, Fancy Dress and lots, lots more.

Kids Tractor Run is Back:  ALL children must be accompanied by an adult..

‘New Life Choir’: Join us in Bailieborough Church of Ireland Church on Monday 18th  March at 7pm to see the Abaana New Life Choir perform a range of worship and traditional African music and dances while telling us stories of life in Uganda. It is sure to be an amazing night which you will not want to miss. Admission is free – we will be taking a collection in aid of Abaana’s work in Uganda on the night. Everybody welcome.

Bailieborough Heritage Society: Bailieborough Heritage Society wishes to acknowledge the contribution of €500 from SSE Renewables Community Fund, this was used to remove some diseased trees, supporting our aim to tidy up the Old Church of Ireland graveyard and making it a safer place for our community to visit.

Mrs. Philomena Finegan: The people of Bailieborough and surrounding areas were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Philomena Finegan, Lisnalee. Philomena, a native of Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon first came to the town almost 75 years ago where she met local businessman, Paddy Finegan. They married a couple of years later. From these beginnings, she spent her life in the drapery business, where she served the women of Bailieborough with dignity and respect and built up a clientele of loyal customers from near and far. Philomena was a great businesswoman who thoroughly enjoyed meeting and chatting with the people and was still

involved in the family business up to a couple of years ago when she took a step back due to her failing health.

Outside of work and her family, her passions in life were playing golf and

bridge. It was a fitting tribute to Philomena that both local clubs provided a Guard of Honor at her funeral on Thursday last, March 7t. She passed away at home surrounded by her family and her loyal carer, Maria Fe on Monday, March 4th. Philomena is survived by her children, Brendan, Anne, Patricia, John,

and Ita; her 7 grandchildren and her 5 great-grandchildren. The large attendance at both the funeral home and Requiem Mass in St Anne’s Church showed the high regard for Philomena in the local community and surrounding areas. The funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Ultan McGoohan and Philomena was then laid to rest in St Anne’s Cemetery next to her beloved husband Paddy. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

Meath and late of Bailieborough, Co. Cavan, who passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on Monday, March 4th 2024.    Noel will be sadly missed by his family, mother Patricia, siblings Gerard, Eilish, Tom, Katriona, Alan, Lorraine and Kevin, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, his Building Surveying colleagues and his many friends.

Noel was predeceased by his father Joe.

Noel’s Funeral Mass took place in S.S. Patrick and Seachnall’s Church, Dunshaughlin on Thursday, March 7th and afterwards, Noel’s remains were laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Regretted Death: The death has occured of Kathleen Comiskey (nee Sexton), “Woodview” Drumalee, Cavan and formerly Grousehall, Bailieborough, Co.Cavan, on Tuesday, March 5th  2024, peacefully. Beloved wife of Brian and deeply loved mother of her son Brían. Kathleen will be very sadly missed by her husband and son, daughter in law Susan, her adored grandchildren Seán, Joel and Dúalta, sisters Bea and Bernadette, brothers in law, sister in law, nephews, nieces, all her relatives and many friends.

Kathleen’s Funeral Mass took place on Friday, March 8th in the Cathedral of SS Patrick and Felim, Cavan and following Mass, Kathleen’s remains were laid to rest in Cullies Cemetery.

A sensational result for Cavan v Armagh on Saturday last with our men again to the fore. A huge chance to both stay in the division, and possibly secure a semi final spot, with a huge game v Monaghan on Saturday next. Match report on the app and social media.

Cavan U20s rounded out the Development League with a good win over Fermanagh. They now prepare for their All Ireland Championship.

Best Wishes from London: On Friday 9th February 2024, James Brady of Tullywaltra along with his son Ciaran, both of north London, were visiting Bailieborough to see Family and Friends and they were staying at the Bailie Hotel, now under the new management of Austin Kelly of Bailieboro / Dublin, where they were made more than welcome. James and Austin have known one another since school days.

James left Bailieboro 65 years ago, to travel to London, to live and work and while there, he met his wife Margaret from London. They have two sons, Ciaran and Emmet. The whole family traveled to Ireland to holiday in Bailieboro and West Cork, almost every year since they married in 1974.

Out of the family of John and Ellen Brady— late of Drumanespic, Bailieborough, Co Cavan, James was the only one that went to London. The other three children went to the U.S.A . The oldest Terence went to Florida and is now deceased, Anna Marie Maddock nee, Brady is also deceased, and lived in many US States.

The third sibling Tommy settled in New York and has lived there for over 60 years, and is married to Betty and have a grown up son Micheal . The youngest is Martha Keaskin nee Brady, of Seeorum, Bailieborough.

James congratulated Austin on his new venture and wished him many years of success. James and Ciaran were Austin’s, first guests at the Bailie Hotel, where they spent three nights and were treated like super stars. James said nothing was to much bother for Austin and his staff.

They were offered wake-up calls with tea and coffee followed by, full Irish breakfast. During the day at any return to the hotel, refreshments were offered and also a gastronomic evening meal. In the evenings, they were joined by James’s nephew, Karl Keaskin, his wife Nessa and family, who are natives of the town.

James wishes Kathleen and Austin Kelly, lots of good luck in the Bailie Hotel, and hopes to return to the Bailie before the end of 2024. James Brady, London.

The Heritage Council: Five monuments across Ireland have been selected for inclusion in the Heritage Council’s Adopt a Monument Scheme 2024. The scheme offers communities expertise, mentoring and support to help them to care for their local heritage.

The sites included in this year’s scheme are Bailieborough Church and Graveyard, Co Cavan, Cooley Cross and graveyard, near Moville, Co Donegal, Altan Farm Summerhouse, Dunlewey, Co Donegal, Rathbeagh ringfort, Co Kilkenny and Court Abbey, Lavagh, Co Sligo.

‘New Life Choir’: Join us in Bailieborough Church of Ireland Church on Monday 18th  March at 7pm to see the Abaana New Life Choir perform a range of worship and traditional African music and dances while telling us stories of life in Uganda. It is sure to be an amazing night which you will not want to miss. Admission is free – we will be taking a collection in aid of Abaana’s work in Uganda on the night. Everybody welcome.

Deepest Sympathy: Deepest Sympathy is extended to brothers Patrick (Rose), Michael (Colleen), Paul (Brenda), Brendan, Gabriel (Ann), Raymond (Mary Rose), sisters Breda, Mary (Michael) and Sheila (Jim), nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, cousins, extended family and friends on the death of their brother Philip Cooney, Monaghanoose, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan who passed away peacefully on Saturday, 23rd  February 2024 at Shrewsbury House Nursing Home, Dublin. Philip was predeceased by his parents Phil and Bridie and brothers Eamon and Kieran.

Philip’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Annes Church, Bailieborough on Wednesday, February 28th and afterwards, Philip’s remains were laid to rest in St. Annes Cemetery.

Annual Niamh Crosby Memorial Run: The annual Niamh Crosby Memorial Run will take place on Easter Sunday, March 31st, 2024. Registration will take place at Enagh House, on the Bailieborough/Virginia Rd., from 10am and the run will commence at 12 noon. All bikes welcome and entry fee is €20.

We are a community based service run by a voluntary Board of Management. East Cavan Gaels GAA Club: Hurling News 4th March 2024

Senior; No intercounty game this past week as Cavan, with ECG men in tow, prepared for two monstrous games v Armagh and Monaghan in NHL over the next few weeks.

County U20s continued in the Ulster Development league with an away game v Monaghan. The final round is next Sunday v Fermanagh.

Senior club training in the club is on the horizon as the Spring league comes up at the end of the month.

Membership is now due and can be done through the app.

Deepest Sympathy: The death has occurred of Eugene (Janie) Smith, Stramaquerty, Virginia, Co. Cavan and late of Drumbannon, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan, peacefully at his daughter Mary Delaney’s home, surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, February 20th, 2024. Eugene was recently predeceased by his brother Vincent (London), his wife Mary, his grandson Simon and grand daughter Emma and great grandson Daniel, his sister Mary and brothers Peter and Nicholas. Eugene will be sadly missed by his loving daughter Mary and his son Patsy (Carlanstown), his son in law Joe, his daughter in law Mary, his grandchildren Sharon (Finnegan), Wayne, Peter, Donna and Kelly, his fourteen great grandchildren, his sisters Eileen and Peggy, brothers in law, sister in law, nieces, nephews, relatives and a wide circle of friends.

Eugene’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Ultan’s Church, Killinkere on Thursday, February 22nd 2024 and afterwards Eugene’s remains were laid to rest in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Bailieborough.

Regretted Death:  Deepest Sympathy is extended to loving wife Ann, sons Declan and Padraig, daughter-in-law Aisling, adored grandchildren Shane, Laura and Alannah, brother Matt, sisters-in-law Kathleen and Nancy, brother-in-law Michael, nephews, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends on the death of Patrick (Packie Joe) Brady, who passed away peacefully in Cavan General Hospital, in his 90th  year, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, 17th  February 2024, late of Caventymahon, Tunnyduff, Bailieborough, Co. Regretted Death: The death has occurred of Seamus McCabe, Church View, Broomfield, Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan, and formerly of Edenagully, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan, peacefully at his home in his 92nd year on Monday, 12th  of February, 2024.

Pre-deceased by his wife Kathleen, mother of Ann (Coates), Martin, Lorcan, Catriona (Lynch), Mary, and Lucy (Carolan) and husband of the late Anna Martin.

Seamus will be sadly missed by his sons and daughters, sons-in-law Kieran, Michael, Graeme and Stephen and daughter-in-law Bríd. And not to be outdone, our U14 girls came away with a hard fought and well deserved semi final win, against a strong Kingscourt side, to also progress to a Cup Final. Girls soccer is well and truly thriving at Bailieboro Celtic….keep it going girls, we’re all very proud of ye!!

Congratulations to Bailieboro Celtic U13 Boys who secured a great win against a strong Kingscourt side, to advance to the Cup Final.

Bailieborough Tidy Towns: Launch of Tidy Towns Plan – Landscape and Natural Heritage Design Proposal:

Bailieborough Tidy Towns in conjunction with the Town Centre First initiative have been working together to develop a new Tidy Town Plan for Bailieborough. The aim of the plan is to aid Bailieborough plan and manage current and future projects within the remit of the National Tidy Towns Competition. The launch of the plan will take place on Thursday, 29th February in Bailieborough Courthouse at 7.30pm.

Cavan County Council in collaboration with Cavan County Local Development

(CCLD) will host an information evening for owners of vacant and derelict properties

as well as for businesses to hear about supports that are currently available to them

for refurbishment, and for energy upgrades of their properties. The event will take

place on Monday 4th  March in the Bailie Hotel at 7.30pm. The event is free and

while it is targeted at businesses and property owners in Bailieborough, it is open to

everyone to attend. A number of companies will be attending on the night to provide

advice and information on retrofitting for businesses.

Regretted Death:  Deepest Sympathy is extended to children, Tommie, Annie, Stephen, Johnnie, Martin, Louise and Richard, brothers Raymond, Tony, Alfie and Desmond, sister Kathleen, grandchildren, great grandchildren, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and large circle of friends on the death of John (Johnnie) Gilsenan, Tierworker, Kells, Co. Meath, who passed away on Saturday, 17th February 2024, peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Johnnie was predeceased by his wife Phylis and daughter Dawn. 

Johnnie’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Patrick’s Church, Tierworker on Monday, February 19th  and  afterwards Johnnie’s remains were laid to rest in the new Moybologue Cemetery.

Bridge takes place every Tuesday evening in the Bailie Hotel at 7.30pm and new members are always welcome.

Women’s World Day of Prayer: The ‘Women’s World Day of Prayer’ Service will be held in Corglass Presbyterian Church on Friday, March 1st at 8.00pm. Guest speaker will be Jenny Horner. Everyone welcome.

Cavan Sports Partnership: Women’s ‘Dip and Dash’ : Kick off Women in Sport week by signing up to our ‘Dip and Dash’ event taking place in Bailieborough Leisure Club.

Complete a 200 m swim followed by a 2k walk or run.

Enjoy a complimentary coffee and a treat once you complete the course.

A Dip and Dash is the perfect way to try out a dual sport, have fun and meet other like minded women! The event takes place at Bailieborough Leisure Centre on Sunday, March 3rd, commencing at 9.00am.

Bailieborough Library: ‘Thank you’ to everyone who attended the January meeting of the Library Book Club. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday,  February 27th  at 6.30pm and new members are always welcome. Copies of February’s read, ‘Antarctica’ by Claire Keegan are available to borrow at the Library desk.

Craft Group meets every Friday at 10.30am and new members are always welcome

‘Colour of Nature’ Photographic Exhibition featuring images from the local catchment area may be viewed at the Library during Library opening hours.

Careers: Thinking of changing career, need advice on careers, educational needs, CV help, interview skills – CMETB (Cavan Monaghan Education and Training Board) will facilitate a FREE drop in service at the Library on the first Wednesday—please note the change of day— of each month from 2pm-4.30pm. No appointment is necessary.

Bailieborough Men’s Shed: Bailieborough ‘Men’s Shed’ is open every Tuesday morning from 10.00am to 1.00pm in the Bexcourt Centre, Shercock Road. New members are always most welcome.

All old and new people welcome.  It’s a well lit up run.  Stretch before and afterwards, every Monday and Wednesday evening.  

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club: Hurling News 19th February 2024

Senior; County lads have no competitive fixture this week as they prepare for the big trip out west to take on Mayo next weekend.

Club adult training is a few weeks away in preparation for what promises to be a very competitive season ahead.

Cavan U20s; Another good workout for this squad, with ECG men in tow on Sunday v a Strong Tyrone side in Kingspan Breffni. Special mention to Cian O’Brien who made his competitive debut. Onwards and upwards for this squad as they head for Armagh next week for round 3.

After school hurling; Full steam ahead for the three venues in Shercock, Mullagh and Bailieborough all the way until Easter.
