Bailieborough Poetry Festival

This year we are celebrating the fourth Bailieborough Poetry Festival—a weekend including the launch of Elena Duff’s Art Exhibition, readings, writing workshops, music and open mic sessions. This year we welcome Guest Poet, Monica Corish and Gallery Press Poets, Peter Fallon, Vona Groake and Tom French.

Bailieborough Poetry Festival Programme of Events 2016:

Thursday, October 6th- Bailieborough Library, 7pm,

Official opening of Poetry Festival with the launch of artist Elena Duff’s exhibition in the Library arts space. This will also feature the launch of pop-up gallery, ‘Gallery Thing’ in the town, presenting a public display of art works from invited artists. The exhibition will be launched by Ollie Burns, a founder of the CO Club in Oldcastle.
There will be a poetry reading by LitLab writers at the launch which will feature new writing based on the art work of Elena Duff. Sips and nibbles provided.
Friday, October 7th – Murtagh’s Lounge:
7.30pm-INTERVIEW and POETRY READING
Poet, Monica Corish in an interview with Irene O’Dea, featuring amongst other things, a discussion on her recent publication A Dying Language which was published by the Hospice Foundation.

8.00pm to 8.30pm: Open mic hosted by Andy Jones.
9.30pm: Music by Luna.

Meeting for All Parents of First Communion and Confirmation Candidates – Bailieborough, Killann and Shercock:  A meeting for all the parents and guardians of the First Communion and Confirmation Classes in St. Anne’s, St. Felim’s and St. Patrick’s National Schools will take place on Monday next, October 10^th in St. Anne’s Church, Bailieborough, at 7.30pm. The main speaker on the night will be Ms. Claudine Marron, Pastoral Assistant in Monaghan Parish. The sacrament of Confirmation will be administered in St. Anne’s, Bailieborough, on Saturday 11^th March, 2017 at 12noon.

Baptism – Baptism Preparation Meeting for Parents

The second Thursday of each month in the Parish Centre (Parochial House beside Church) from 8pm to 9pm. The next meeting is on Thursday, October 13^th. All parents who are intending to have their child baptised are required to attend this meeting before finalising the date. Parents are reminded to give at least one month’s notice of their intention to have their child baptised to 087-4407990.

 

Shamrock Golf Society Golf Classic Present Cheque to Bailieborough Cancer Comfort Ltd.

The Shamrock Golf Society ran a hugely successful 4 Person Team Event Golf Classic in Virginia Golf Club on Friday 16th September and Saturday 17th September to raise money for Bailieborough Cancer Comfort Ltd. Numerous sponsors and teams came on board and generously gave their own cash and we can’t thank those people enough. In total we raised €13,250 and in Fox’s Bar Bailieborough we presented the Cheque to the committee of Bailieborough Cancer Comfort Ltd. Thanks again to all who sponsored tee boxes, to people that put teams into the event, to everyone who bought raffle tickets and to all who donated to Seamus Sheridan’s Haircut. Without all of ye we wouldn’t have been able to achieve this remarkable sum of money.

 Congratulations to the Bailieborough Shamrocks U14 team who won the Division 1 Final on Tuesday night week last in Breffni Park. Bailieborough defeated Dernacrieve Gaels 3-18 to 4-12.  Well done to all involved.

 Presents ‘The Lily and the Poppy’, a joint lecture by Philip Orr, an historian of the Great War and author of ‘Field of Bones, an Irish Division at Gallipoli’, and Joe Austin, a life-long Republican, at Bailieborough Library on Thursday, 13^th  October at 7.30pm.  All are welcome and admission is free.

Bailieborough Group of Parishes

The following services and events will be happening over the Harvest season at the Bailieborough Group of Parishes.  As ever, it’s an open house and so all are invited and welcome to come along.

Saturday 24th September: 3pm Bailieborough Hall: Messy Church.  Fun, craft, celebration time and food. Everyone is invited – young and old alike, adults, children, teenagers, carers, grandparents. Come as a family or come on your own. Children must bring an adult with them.

The Bailieborough Community School Parents Association are holding a Tractor, Vintage Car and Motorcycle Run on Sunday next, September 25^th in aid of the Student Canteen Upgrade Fund. The annual Harvest Display will be in the sanctuary next weekend in St. Anne’s Church, Bailieborough, and in St. Patrick’s Church, Shercock. HOPE

Ten years ago John had a liver transplant as a direct result of addiction to drugs and alcohol. Today, John devotes all his time to bringing hope to those who maybe in need—especially the homeless, those suffering from addictions, suicide, self-harmers and people with eating disorders.  Come and hear his life changing story and his message of hope on Wednesday, 21^st September in the Bailie Hotel at 7.30pm.

The Bailieborough Poetry Festival and Poetry Competition 2016

This year we are celebrating the fourth Bailieborough Poetry festival and in keeping with previous festivals we have expanded the number of artists and poets coming to Bailieborough on the weekend of 6th -8th October.

The LitLab group of writers are hosting a weekend of readings, workshops, open mic sessions, art exhibitions, etc. The festival this year welcomes Gallery Press and this promises to be a significant addition to the 2016 festival.  One of the highlights of the weekend in past years has been the live adjudication of the shortlisted poets in The Bailieborough Poetry Competition. Full programme of events will be published next week.

Seamie’s Hair Cut

Last Saturday saw the local iconic figure of Seamie Sheridan getting his locks cut, in aid of the Bailieboro Cancer Care fund. This was a preliminary event to assist the Shamrocks Golf Society in their efforts to raise funds for the same cause in a Golf Classic on 16/17 September in Virginia.

Thanks goes to Rosa for getting the deed done and to all the staff at The Square bar for their assistance, to everyone who supported the event and contributed to the worthy cause and especially to Seamie who went along with the “off the cuff “ idea.

To date, over €1440 euro has been raised, showing how much the local community wanted to see Seamie come out from under all that “grey mass “he has been parading around in for some time. Contributions can still be made at The Square Bar or Hall’s Newsagent’s. Again Thank you to all involved for making the night such a success.

Deepest Sympathy is extended to wife Rose, daughters Deborah, Laura and Ann, sons Damien and Barrie, grandson Liam and extended network of family and friends on the sudden death of Eamonn Sheridan, Dunheeda, Kingscourt and formerly of Drumbannon, Bailieborough who died on Monday, August 29^th. Eamonn’s Funeral Mass took place took place in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Kingscourt on Thursday morning September 1^st with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

New Mother-Toddler Group

MiniMovers is a new weekly activity class for children from 3 months up to 5 years of age.

With a focus on encouraging movement through music, song and play it creates a fun space for young children to develop their physical, social and early educational needs.

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 5th September 2016

Under 6/8/10; A great evening of hurling in Kingscourt on Friday last at the finals of our own U10 tournament. East Cavan Gaels won the McCuill Plate after an entertaining game v Colmcilles B side. Castleblayney came out winners in a hard fought Setanta Shield Final against Cootehill and after a fine display of hurling by both sides while Colmcilles A side defeated a gallant Carrickmacross side to secure the first ever CuChulainn Cup. The finals followed the earlier rounds which most clubs hosted a round of competition. A very worthwhile exercise as boys got well over 20 games each in the competition.

‘Charity Barber Style Haircut Event’

The Bailieborough Shamrocks Golf Society are running a golf classic in aid of Bailieborough Cancer Comfort Ltd on 16/17 Sept in Virginia. Teams of four are €100. Anybody interested contact Seamie Sheridan on (086) 0532174.

As a prelude to this Golf Classic, the Society have “encouraged” the aforementioned Seamie Sheridan to do a badly needed “Barber Style Hair Cut” also for Bailieborough Cancer Comfort Ltd. This “Barbering” will take place on Sept 3^rd in the Square after the Society’s ‘Concra Wood’ outing at around 9pm.  The tight trimming of his flowing, greying locks will assist the Society’s fund raising drive for this vital community service. Donations are going well but if you have not have already donated for this event and worthy cause you can still contribute through “Hall’s Newsagent” and “The Square Bar”. Please donate and bring “Seamie” back to his childhood barbered look!!!

Bailieboro Poetry Competition 2016

Closing date for entries is Wednesday 31st August 2016. First prize of €300 for winning poem with a 2nd prize of €50 to be awarded. There will also be a special prize for a local entrant domiciled in Cavan or Meath. Each poem must not exceed 50 lines, and should be typed, single-spaced. The competition is open to anybody who has reached their 18th birthday. Up to three poems may be submitted per entry. You may submit as many entries as you wish. A fee of €5 per poem or 3 poems for €10 is payable. Payment should be made via the PayPal button. In the case of email entries poems should be submitted as an attachment to an email to competition@bailieboroughpoetry.com. The email address used to submit the entry must be the same as the email used for the Paypal transaction. The attachment should contain the text of the poems with no author identification. Una Smith chairperson of Cootehill’s past and present Arts Festival Committee is delighted to be welcoming back these very talented Multinational performers with their productions of Shakespeare which have won Footsbarn global acclaim over the years and newly created to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Bard’s death, the incomplete works is full of Magic, and Humour, where anything is possible? Please support this event and help re-energize the Arts in Cootehill into the future.

Hurling/Camogie Camp;

What a tremendous week! Over 100 boys and girls enjoyed our 3rd annual camp in Bailieborough GAA from Tuesday to Thursday. This was the biggest ever camp so far with boys and girls from the entire region learning new skills in a fun environment. Thanks to all our volunteers, coaches and parents who all contributed to another very successful camp. Thanks to Bailieborough GAA for the use of their fine facilities. Roll on 2017!

The Under 14s had a good win over Woodford in the second round of the Championship on Wednesday last. The next round is away to St. Felim’s this coming Wednesday.

PARISH PILGRIMAGE – LOUGH DERG

The bus will be leaving the St. Anne’s Church Carpark (Virginia Road side) at 7.15am on Monday morning next, 22^nd August and travelling to Lough Derg via Cavan. The cost of the one day retreat is €40 and lasts from 10am to 4pm.  The boat transfer and a light lunch are included in this price and the bus is provided by the parish. The money for the retreat will be collected on the journey down to avoid delays. There will be a stop in Enniskillen for an hour on the way home to give people the chance to eat or just look around and the bus should be back in Bailieborough no later than 8.30pm. August 17th – Deerpark Virginia: (M) Walk 1 Hour 30 min. (E) Walk 1 Hour. Leaving Bailieborough Library at 6.50pm. Walk commences at 7.15pm at the lake shore beside Virginia College.

August 24th – Lough an Leagh : (A) Walk 2 + hours (approx) Leaving Bailieborough Library at 7pm. Walk commences at the picnic area on Lough an Leagh at 7.15pm. All welcome.

Cemetery Sunday

The Blessing of the Graves in St. Anne’s Cemetery will take place on Sunday, September 4^th at 2.00pm. Now would be the ideal time to look after the grave or a plot of a loved one in preparation for Cemetery Sunday.

Bailieborough Shamrocks GAA

The Shamrocks Golf Society are running a 4 Person Team Event in Virginia Golf Club on the 16th and 17th September 2016 in aid of Bailieborough Cancer Comfort Ltd. Each and every one of us has had a family member, relation or friend who has had to battle cancer and we are just trying to raise money for this wonderful cause. East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 15th August 2016

Hurling/Camogie Camp; Just a couple of days to go to our Hurling/Camogie Fun camp in Bailieborough Shamrocks GAA grounds. 9am-1.30 each day Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 16/17/18th August. These camps get bigger and better with each passing year with this year’s promising to be the biggest ever! First child €30, 2 children €50 and 3 children €60. Equipment supplied and all are very welcome from the entire East Cavan catchment area.

Under 6/8/10; Both the Kingscourt and Bailieborough training groups will return to training and games in the weeks following the camp. Watch this space.

 

Under 12/14; The Under 14s went down to a very strong Cootehill side in the first round of the championship on Wednesday last and will look to bounce back with a home game v Woodford Gaels this Wednesday at 7.30 in Bailieborough.

 

Under 16/18; Our Minors put in a very game performance in going down to Cootehill in the Ulster league midweek. The lads played very well and are again improving with each passing game. The next round of minor is Wednesday week v Castleblayney.

Our U16s take on Lisbellaw this coming Saturday also in the Ulster league.
