East Cavan Gaels GAA Club: Hurling News 10th December 2023

Senior;: League Title retained!

East Cavan Gaels 0-14

Cootehill 0-13

In some of the most challenging conditions ever witnessed for a league final both sides must be commended on the quality of hurling on display in Kingspan Breffni 3G on Saturday last.

While Storm Elin was making the conditions difficult another storm was brewing on the field as we got a solid start v the Championship winners with a bare bones squad due to injuries, illness and lads committed elsewhere but they really got stuck in with Nicky Kenny with some fine scores from play while Canice Maher punished early Cootehill indiscretions in scoring the resultant frees while chipping in with two from play also. Brian Fitzgerald was proving hard to handle in the full forward line in opening up some good opportunities elsewhere. Going in four up at halftime while Cootehill had a man dismissed for a high challenge just before the break, our lads knew the second half was going to be a battle and it lived up to that tag. The conditions, if it were possible, actually worsened as the second half progressed and Cootehill managed to get level while our lads began to tire but they managed to find another wind late on to fire over the winning scores to retain our Senior title for the first time.

Conor Gallagher was assured in goal while not being overly tested as the full back line of Gary Leddy, Cian McEntee and Adam Baldwin put in a serious shift to snuff out repeated attacks.

The half back line of the youthful James Tully, winning his first title at adult level, was complimented by the experience of both Jack Barry and another debutant in Liam O’Brien while Canice and Tadhg Barry had their hands very full in the midfield areas where it was white hot at times! With Callum Shiel and Conor Walsh dovetailing very well with the aforementioned Kenny to secure good scores while Daire Leddy, Brian Fitzgerald and Rory Farrell spearheaded an attack which combined very well with the other forward unit.

Credit to Adam Baldwin assisted by Derek Argue in securing back to back league titles after years of near misses. Their dedication has been richly rewarded.

Congratulations to our entire squad for their years work and for now delivering a platform on which to build hopefully even more.

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club –Hurling News 20th  November 2023:

Senior, U17/15/13/11/9/7;

Seniors preparing for Cavan league final which will likely be in two weeks time.

The U17s will train with the Seniors for the remainder of the season.

The U15s will train on alternate Tuesdays with Cavan GAA coaches on the 3G at Kingspan Breffni and train with us on the alternate Mondays.

U11/13s will train at Kingspan Breffni on Tuesday 6.30-7.30.

Under 7 and Under 9s are now in the new after school programme and/or Killinkere indoors.

Inter county CCC proposal; We are both disappointed and concerned at proposals from National GAA in conjunction with local units to consider the removal of County sides from NHL from 2025.

If people understood the utter madness it is at times, to be hurling they would have a better understanding as to why it fails.

It is set up to fail, the Association sets it up to fail at both national and local level. It’s in the way! Something to be swept aside at the first opportunity. Children are not given the opportunity to even play the game as it “gets in the way”!

We keep going! We love the game thankfully and we love those who play it with us as they are made of the stuff you want from leaders, heart, strength of character, resilience in the face of incredible challenges. These players are the best of us. If we’re going into the trenches these are the people we look for. The same in Louth, Leitrim, Longford, Fermanagh, etc.

The structure needs to change. Children love hurling when given the opportunity to play but unfortunately the Association would rather they never get that opportunity.

The absurdity of that statement alone should force real and meaningful change!

After school hurling; After school hurling continues in Mullagh on Thursdays and Shercock on Fridays. Club U7/9/12 training indoors on Saturdays in Killinkere.

Table Quiz; Save the date. Friday 1st December in The Square Bar, Bailieborough. This is always a good social occasion as well as a good fundraiser for the club. All support is much appreciated.

Inter county CCC proposal; We are both disappointed and concerned at proposals from National GAA in conjunction with local units, to consider the removal of County sides from NHL from 2025. As we are from the county that had no county team for many years due to a lack of both foresight and development we are keenly aware of the damage that a proposal like this will have on hurling development going forward and we hope that common sense will prevail and hurling will get the respect it deserves.

After school hurling;

After school hurling continues in Mullagh on Thursdays and Shercock on Fridays. Club U7/9/12 training will return indoors from Saturday in Killinkere.
