Local Boy is ‘Woodies Heroes Ambassador’:
Eight year old Daniel Gilsenan from Bailieborough and his dog Piper are this year’s Woodie’s Heroes ambassadors on behalf of Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland.
This is the 9th year of the Woodie’s Heroes Campaign which has raised €3 million for Irish children’s charities since 2015.
Daniel’s father Mark says Piper has not just changed Daniel’s life but the family as a whole.
He added that before Piper’s arrival Daniel was a constant “flight risk” and even the simplest of tasks of going to the shop for milk was extremely difficult.
However, since Piper joined the household, Mark says the whole family’s lives has been transformed.
It costs €25,000 to fully train an autism assistance dog, however the funds raised through Woodie’s Heroes campaign will enable AADI to train more puppies and change the lives of more children who need the support of a dog like Piper.
Pastoral Council: Thanks to the Pastoral Council for organising a wonderful Parish Day last Sunday. Thanks to the huge number of parishioners who turned out for the walk and enjoyed the beautiful refreshments afterwards in the Community Centre. Thanks also to the Gardai, to John Brady for sharing some local history with us as we walked and to Peter Mc Cabe, who was available to provide medical assistance.
Bailieborough Heritage Society: Volunteers wanted to clean up the Old Church of Ireland Graveyard, commencing this Tuesday evening 4th August from 19.00 to 20.30 and on Saturday at 10 am ‘til noon. This will continue for the month of August. Please bring your own gardening tools.

The Blessing of the Graves will take place in Killann Old Cemetery on Saturday, August 19th at 7.00pm and the Blessing of the Graves will take place at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Shercock on Sunday, August 20th, immediately after 11.30am, Mass.
Summer Showcase 2023: Bailieborough Creative Hub are hosting their annual ‘Summer Showcase’ Art Exhibition in the old Bailieborough Courthouse until Monday, August 7th. Come along and support the artists. Everyone is welcome.
Cavan Kayakarun: The 12th edition of the Cavan Kayakarun takes place on Saturday , August 12th , starting at 12 noon from Gallonray House , Maudabawn.
The race will follow the same route as last year, starting with a 4 k run from Gallonray House and coming back to there. Competitors will then transition to their bikes and head out on a 16k cycle which will take them to Barnagrow Lake. There they will swop their bikes for kayaks and take to the water for a 1.5k row. Back on dry land, its on the bikes again for an 18k cycle which will bring them back to Gallonray House to complete the final hurdle, a 4k run on the same course as the starting loop. Best wishes to all taking part.

National Heritage Week: A ‘Living Heritage Craft Exhibition’ will take place in Bailieborough Library from Friday, August 11th to Saturday, August 19th as part of National Heritage week. On Saturday, August 19th, there will be free demonstrations and and Craft activities for all ages. Some crafts are in danger of becoming extinct as they rely
on skilled hands passing the techniques down through the generations.
As we become a more technology based society and with little or no crafts
taught in schools we are in danger of losing some traditional crafts for good!
Bailieborough has a rich pool of crafters creating all kinds of objects from
textiles, wool, wood and more and we hope to put a shining light on to some
heritage craft practices.
Our exhibition and demo day will showcase a variety heritage crafts where
visitors can watch crafters at work and try some crafts for themselves and
maybe they will be inspired to start a new creative hobby.

Moybologue Historical Society: Join the committee of Moybologue Historical Society and Kevin Barton, Archaeological Geophysicist (www.lgs.ie) for an update on the fieldwork, conservation work and promotional activities undertaken at Moybologue church and graveyard to date, as well as a discussion on what the future might hold for this wonderful space and resource in our local community on Wednesday, August 16th from 7.30pm to 8.30pm at St. Mary’s Hall, Tierworker.
The occasion will also mark the formal launch of the digital audio guide and visitor information brochure for Moybologue church and graveyard. Refreshments served afterwards.

14 years since our foundation, 6 since we started an adult section and 1 year since annexing our first domestic silverware in winning the League our Seniors have qualified for the CAVAN SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL!!!!
It will be played on Sunday next, August 6th at 1pm in Kingspan Breffni v Cootehill Celtic.
This is another significant step in the development of this squad backboned by some superb young local talent who have spent many years learning and honing their craft, with the addition of some immensely talented lads who’ve come to live and work in our community.
We encourage all Gaels from our local communities to come and support the lads as they go in search of a first, historic, championship.
The challenge is tough. Reigning Champions Cootehill will be a stern test for our lads but one they are up for!

Killann Parsih : Wonderful turnout for our Parish Day walk and get-together as we approach the Feast of St Anne, our parish patron. Thanks to the Parish Pastoral Council for their hard work and to John Brady for giving us the history of the Brothers graves and many other snippets as we walked.

Robert’s Funeral Service took place in Bailieborough Parish Church on Wednesday, July 20th , with burial afterwards in the adjoining graveyard.
Bailieborough Creative Hub: Bailieborough Creative Hub are delighted to announce that we have secured funding through the Creative Cavan Grant Scheme 2023 towards the design and painting of a mural on a premises in Bailieborough. We are now inviting quotations from mural artists to work with our group to design and complete the mural.
This project aims to achieve public art that resonates with the natural environment and local heritage, encouraging linking of history, community and the physical space including elements that are unique to Bailieborough.

Break-in at St. Annes: The Gardai in Bailieborough are currently investigating a break- in at St Anne’s Church in the early hours of Sunday morning, 16th July. The culprits broke a side window and entered through same. Damage was also caused to the front door. Did you pass this way, the Virginia Road, between 12am and 3am and notice any suspicious activity. Parish Walk and Gathering: Next Sunday, July 23rd; The Parish Pastoral Council has designated Sunday, July 23rd as a Parish Day. People are invited to meet at the Community Centre at 1.30pm to participate in a leisurely 3km Walk from the Community Centre to the Brothers Graves in the wood and back again to the Community Centre for refreshments. Killann Community Games: Congratulations and Well Done to the Killann Under 14 Girls GAA side who beat Carrickmacross in the Ulster Final held in the Peace Link Park in Clones on Sunday morning last. The girls played very well and ended up being comfortable winners.

Ten years ago, Bailieborough Red Cross supplied two public access defibrillators and heated wall mounted cases. As these machines are now at the end of their useful lives and spares and servicing are no longer available, they need to be replaced. Mattie’s Fundraiser: Mattie’s Fundraiser In Aid of Cancer Charities. Join us on Sunday, 30th July for a local Cancer Charity Fundraiser in honour of the late, Mattie Cahill. Taking place at The Royal Breffni, Tierworker, Bailieborough and it will include an easy walk at 11.30am from the Royal Breffni. A ‘Tractor Run’ will also be part of the day, along with an auction , with over 40 lots entered. Later on that evening, ‘Reilly and the Moonrockers’ will entertain those present and there will be an award for the ‘Best Jiving Couple’. Also on the night, there will be a raffle, with loads of great prizes. All welcome.

Absolutely huge win for Bailieboro Celtic’s Senior Men’s Side on last Thursday night as they defeated second place Walshestown F.C by 4—3 at The Vale, to keep their undefeated run going and remain top of the table. Brilliant performance from everyone involved, great resilience shown by the lads to stay in the game and win this very important fixture. Bailieboro remain top of the Division 2 table with 7 wins out of 7.

Regretted Death: Deepest Sympathy is extended to wife, Myrnie and daughters, Valerie and Shirley on the death of Paddy O’Brien, (Sandymount Avenue, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 and formerly of Aughavas, Co. Leitrim and Bailieborough, Co. Cavan), who passed away on Wednesday, July 5th , 2023, peacefully at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin. Paddy will be dearly missed by his devoted wife, his daughters, sons-in-law James and Victor, his adored grandsons Niall and Tom, sisters Nelly, Patsy and Josie, brother-in- law Michael, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
During his time in Bailieborough, Paddy was Chairman of the Bailieborough Co-Op. Paddy was a man before his time and was responsible for the many projects that Bailieborough Co-Op developed during his time here. Paddy made an enormous contribution in creating long term employment in Bailieborough and the surrounding areas and the people of Bailieborough will be forever grateful for his foresight and businness sense.

Bailieboro Celtic A.F.C: Massive win for Bailieboro Celtic on Friday night last, as they advanced to the next round of the PM Blinds and Shutters Challenge Cup, with a 2-1 win against Premier Division side Bellurgan United at The Vale. Brilliant performance from all the lads in what was a very impressive win against a tough Premier Division side, as Bailieboro maintain their undefeated run.

Illness, injury, J1, football and a new baby, congratulations
to Dave and Aishling on the new baby boy!, made for a host of changes in this “Cavan Derby” victory in the CuChulainn league. Callum Shiel deputised for the aforementioned Dave and performed well under some serious pressure. With both sides shorn of many of their regulars this was an opportunity for Adam Baldwin to ring the changes around the field and get more minutes into the squad who are enjoying the regularity of consistent games in the summer for the first time in a long while.
Canice was ably assisted in midfield by Tadhg, deputising for the elder Barry in USA, to put in a good shift with both helping to create opportunities for the inside forwards of which Rory Farrell continues to catch the eye with some scintillating runs which always caused all sorts of problems for the hosts.
Nicky Kenny kept the scoreboard ticking over while Daire Leddy and Kyle McGuinness continue their rapid improvement this season with some eye catching scores of their own. Conor Walsh continues to go well in the half forward line although hes comfortable on either “40” which shows his flexibility. Jack McGuinness, Baldwin and Derek Argue continue to hold a tight defensive half back line while Cian McEntee and Darragh Madden continue to get good minutes and exposure in the full back line. All in all another good night but you can be sure that the line ups will be different later in the summer when these sides meet again in the Cavan Senior Hurling Championship.
Onwards to next week in what looks like a group decider in a Farney/Breffni derby when local rivals Carrickmacross come to town.

Busy groups at the minute. The U11s had a good game v Latton away on Sunday. Captained by Reece this week they worked really hard and had a good mornings hurling in good conditions. The U13s had a good match v Cootehill on Saturday with some solid performances while the U15s continued their development with a good game against Naomh Aodghan in the Fermanagh league. No training for the U11s or 13s this week as holiday season kicks in while the U15s head back towards Enniskillen as they take on Belnaleck in the league.
Under 7/9; The season for these lads is almost done as holiday season is upon us. We’ll try for the odd game but a couple of training sessions and focus will return to the indoor season in September.
Monday’s; Senior training Bailieborough 8pm.
Wednesday; Seniors home to Carrickmacross, Mullagh 8pm.
