Bailieborough News. January 5th  2017 Matthew J. Cullen.

Christmas in Bailieborough

Attendance at all the religious services in the area were up on previous years with lots of people and their families returning home from abroad for the festive occasion. The Christmas spirit was in evidence—particularly on Christmas Eve—with the Annual Christmas Carol singing by the Bailieborough Cancer Fund on Main St.

Footfall in the local shops was up and in the run up to Christmas, trying to get parking on Main St., was a nightmare at times but shoppers made good use of the car parks in the town.

A big well done to everyone who took part in the Christmas Swim in Bailieborough. It was wild, wet and windy but it didn’t hold the locals back from the traditional Christmas Day swim which was being held for the 23rd time with the proceeds going to Bailieborough Senior Citizens. Hats off to the Special Abilities Tutors who took part despite the heavy rain. You are an amazing bunch of volunteers!

The Athletic Club’s Annual St. Stephen’s Day run was well supported with participants eager to clear the cobwebs after Christmas Day. The John Ed Sheanon inspired walk—in memory of P.J. Byrne— on Wednesday was also well attended and supported.

It was also a happy time for one local person/ family, who were the winners of the Christmas Eve Lotto jackpot worth over a cool €4,500,000. The winning ticket was sold in Lorraine Harris’s ‘Supervalu’ and at the time of writing, no one knows who has won it but as usual, there are plenty of rumours and potential candidates!! Anyway, well done whoever you are and good health and happiness to enjoy it!

THANK YOU  to all who decorated and prepared St. Annes Church for Advent and Christmas especially Sean Reilly, Olive Steenson, Eileen O’Reilly, Lucy Clarke, Marie Guckian, Geraldine Reilly, James Clarke, our caretaker Sadie Clarke, our sacristan May Cassidy and the members of the Community Employment Scheme. Thanks also to those took part in our liturgies, especially the First Communion and Confirmation classes from the local national schools, the students from Bailieborough Community School, the First Communion Parents Committee, the St. Anne’s National School Choir, the Eucharistic Ministers, Stewards and the Ministers of the Word.

Music is such an essential part of the liturgy and we are blessed to have two fine choirs here in Bailieborough Church Area – the St. Anne’s Choir directed and guided by Derek Eakins and the Folk Choir led by Thomas Hanley and Sean Reilly. We the people and priests of the parish really appreciate, and are thankful for, the work and effort of all involved.

Bailieborough News. December 15th 2016

Bailieborough News. December 15th 2016.  Matthew J. Cullen.

Bailieboro Garda Station Open Day. Saturday 17th December 2016 from 11am-3pm.

Superintendent Leo McGinn and the Gardaí at Bailieboro Garda Station wish to announce their first ever ‘Garda Station Open Day’. This is an excellent initiative aimed at building closer ties with all members of the community in the Bailieboro District, through some fun and informal interaction. As you may be aware Bailieboro Garda Station is the District Headquarters for the sub-district stations of Mullagh, Virginia, Cootehill, Ballyjamesduff, Shercock and Kingscourt.

This Open Day is a great opportunity to come and meet your local Gardaí and see the inner workings of your Garda Station. There will be special tours of areas normally off limits to the general public including the control room, prisoner processing, interview rooms and the cell areas. There will also be various vehicle and personnel displays. On show throughout the day we hope to have multiple patrol cars, vans and motorbikes along with some of the more specialist equipment from the likes of the Dog Unit, Mounted Unit, Sub-Aqua unit, Public Order Unit and National Armed Units. The Garda Band will also be making an appearance. There will also be a fly-by/hover from Alpha Sierra 2, one of the hi-tech Garda Helicopters. (We wish to note that obviously these national units can only be confirmed on the day due to possible operational requirements elsewhere).

There will of course be plenty of photo opportunities with the various displays both inside and outside the station…why not get your very own “Mug-Shot” at the height chart or sitting in a cell. There will be special prizes to any children dressed as police officers and light refreshments sponsored by Harris’s SuperValu, Bailieboro for the kids too.

Being the Gardaí, this event is not all fun and games, there is a serious side too. To that end our local crime prevention officer will be providing information to help keep your home and family safe.

Additionally, we are delighted to host members of the Road Safety Authority “Check-it-Fits” team, who will be on hand at the HSE car-park next door to check your children’s car seats are fitted correctly and if not, to show you how. The RSA roll-over simulator will also be present which is fitted to a hydraulic platform and can simulate a 90 degree and 180 degree roll-over demonstrating how it would feel if you were a driver or passenger involved in a less than desirable incident. It will also show you the effects of being suspended by your seat belt. The Road Safety Authority’s New Interactive Shuttle will also be present.

The Bailieboro Fire Crew and their engine will be on hand too, showing off their equipment along with the Irish Red Cross.

This event is totally free and is open to all members of the Public. We hope to welcome you all on the day. The event will proceed regardless of rain!

East Cavan Gaels GAA Hurling Club

2016 Hurler of the Year Jack Barry

JB

Incredible news that our own Jack Barry was first of all nominated but then went on to win Cavan Hurler of the year at the Sheridan Insurances award night on Friday last. A great individual award for Jack, who is still U16, for his consistent outstanding performances in the Celtic Challenge U17 inter-county competition for Cavan, picking up numerous player of the game awards along the way as well as great performances in the Cavan U16 championship, Ulster U16 league and Ulster minor league.

A first individual playing award to an East Cavan Gaels player also. Everyone in the club is rightly proud of this great achievement.

Well done Jack.

East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 14th November 2016

Under 16/18; Under 16 Championship final.

Cootehill 6-07

East Cavan Gaels 2-06

Definitely a case of what might have been on Wednesday in Breffni. An excellent display by our lads who are a mixture of only 4 16 year olds with a sprinkling of 13/14 year old lads. A very nasty head injury to Cillian Traynor coupled with the 2 goals that followed while a man down was ultimately our undoing on the night. Our defence while under some serious pressure delivered a serious performance led by Cian. The midfield area grabbed a good foothold in the game with Jack, Cillian, Seamus and Kevin putting in a serious shift to lay the platform. Unfortunately we are still very young in the forward department and the older physical presence of the Cootehill lads kept most of our attacks at bay but we still created a load of chances.

Cillian’s injury made the second half that bit more difficult but credit to our lads for sticking with Cootehill where they scored 3-04 to our 2-04. We are getting closer each year. Well done to all.

Congratulations and Well Done

Congratulations and Well Done to local girl, Leanne Kieran who scored a hat-trick in the Continental Tyres Women’s Senior Cup Final for Shelbourne Ladies in the Aviva Stadium on Sunday last. Leanne—who also starred in the Ladies Under 19 International Side in their recent tournament in Skopje—was also awarded the ‘Woman of the Match’ Award for her display in the 5-0 comprehensive win over Wexford Youths. A very big crowd turned out at the Market Square on Sunday evening to welcome 17 year old Leanne home and although it was a bitterly cold evening, Leanne happily posed for all the photos of the town’s latest sporting success. Thank you to the hundreds of people who came out to support Leanne Kiernan ! Thank you to all the people who acted on such short notice. Padraic McIntyre – Compere, Nixys Thesquarebar – food and entertainment, Kevin Gorman – photographer, Brendan McCahey – for singing congratulations !! Bailieborough Shamrocks Gaa – for getting the word out and Bailieborough Gardai for Leanne’s escort and of course to the wee woman herself!!! Well done Leanne, your town and it’s people are very, very proud of you.
