Vandals at work again. Five new Silver Birch trees [ 8ft.} approx .in height and 30 Beech hedging were stolen from the Cavan Road along the new footpath near the Forest entrance. Some still had an Urcher Garden Centre tag on them.  This Tidy Town project was only completed last Monday. It is so annoying and costly for the Tidy Towns.

The Gardai have been notified. Anyone with any information or anyone who saw anything suspicious on Wednesday evening /night{ Dec. 9th } in the area ,pass it on to the Gardai. These trees would need a truck/ trailer to transport them.

Bailieborough Tidy Towns: Bailieborough Tidy Towns want to say ‘Thank You’ to Stan who has to retire on December 18th.

Stan is the angel who picks up litter from our streets every morning, no matter what the weather is like. He has taken great care also with cleaning the footpaths with his wire brush.

The Tidy Towns appreciate all your patience and hard work Stan and I am sure the businesses and residents feel the same.

Christmas Day Swim: The organisers have decided that due to the current restrictions there will be no Christmas Day Swim this year in the town lake. Hope everyone keeps safe and has a Happy Christmas. See you all next year.

St Annes : Christmas Arrangements: The Bailieborough members of the Pastoral Council have agreed the following arrangements for Christmas at St. Anne’s Church:

Christmas Eve: Mass at 4.00pm: Reserved for Senior Citizens and those with underlying conditions only. No children allowed.

Mass at 8.00pm and Mass at Midnight (12pm).

Christmas Day: Masses at 10.00am and 11.30am.

It is difficult to anticipate how large attendances will be this Christmas. With the restrictions, St. Annes can accommodate no more than 100 families safely at each Mass. Rather than focusing exclusively on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, parishioners are strongly encouraged to consider making their Christmas observance on one of the other days of the Christmas season. In St. Annes there will be Mass on the evening of Saturday 26^th December, Sunday, 27^th December, Friday, January 1^st, Saturday, January 2^nd, Sunday, January 3^rd, Tuesday, January 5^th and Wednesday, January 6th—which all fall within the season of Christmas.

Christmas Confessions: It will not be possible to hold the traditional Christmas penitential service. Parishioners are encouraged to make a sincere Act of Contrition, with a resolve to attend Confessions –when it is possible to do so again.

Masses will be said at usual Bailieborough times and may be viewed on our webcam or heard on our radio system at 107.8FM.

Christmas Lights are on!!And just like that the town is lit up, beautiful for the Festive Season. With very little fanfare—due to the Covid-19 restrictions—the Christmas Lights in the town were turned on, on last Saturday evening. The town looks absolutely brilliant and is a stunning display and will help bring about some very much needed Christmas cheer in these troubling times. All in the community sincerely thank all the members of the Bailieborough Mid-Summer Festival and Town Events committee and their many helpers, for bringing this much needed ‘lift’ to the town. The committee would like to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year. Please support your local business.

Good Luck: The countdown to the big game on Saturday has well and truly begun, with all in the town and surrounding areas waiting in anticipation for this mammoth ‘David v Goliath’ battle! Bailieborough St. Vincent DePaul, Annual Appeal:This Appeal takes place on Sunday, December 13^th. St. Anne’s Conference offers support and friendship, on a confidential basis, to those in the Bailieborough, Knockbride, Shercock and Tierworker communities, who are in need and request help. Assistance is given towards the cost of food, heating, education and household related expenses. The contact number for the Conference is via a Freephone number: 1800 677 777.

Due to the pandemic, this year the Conference has not benefitted from their normal Church collections and the usual level of support from ‘Vincent’s Shop’. Conference finances have, therefore, been adversley impacted as a result and hence our special appeal at this time. Moybologue Historical Society: Works on the repointing of the Church ruins at Moybologue by Rocks Road Stone Co continued last week and progress is really picking up. Its quite a thrill to see the project so far advanced and nearing to completion. Who knows when the last time such extensive scaffolding and stone mason expertise was in place on-site.

The roadside walls pointing and capping has been completed, looks terrific, and is now safely under covers to protect from the elements.

Christmas Cheer: In these very unusual and trying times, it was great to see the members and friends of the Bailieborough Mid-Summer Festival and Town Events out and about last weekend getting the Christmas Lights and fixtures all ready for the Festive season. This year—more than any other year—the entire community will need a ‘lift’ to see us through the long dark days ahead and it will be through the efforts of these local people that we will have something to look forward to and enjoy, so a big ‘Thank You’ to all the people who have put in the hard work to help our town. 

Bailieborough Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre: Update: We at Bailieborough Swimming and Leisure Centre CLG hope that everyone is safe and well at this time.

We are absolutely thrilled that we have recently been successful in getting approval for grant funding for €122,500. We will continue to work with Cavan County Council and Government agencies to draw down this funding as soon as we can. In light of this good news, we would like to express our sincere thanks to all our public representatives who worked with us to achieve this funding. We want to let the public know that the Board are now working on plans to reopen the centre as soon as possible in early 2021 so please keep posted on the centre’s website and on social media for further developments.

Our General Manager, Mary McConnell, who has worked at the Leisure Centre since its opening has decided to take some personal time away from the Leisure Centre. The Board will seek to find a replacement manager to fill this post. In the meantime, we send Mary our best wishes and we look forward to seeing her back at the Centre sometime in the future.

Moybologue Historical Society: Work has continued apace again this week at Moybologue Old graveyard to almost complete the work on the roadside walls and progress the work on the Church ruins. The weather certainly isn’t helping, but locally based stonework specialists Rocks Road Stone Co are making great progress. Kevin Blackwood of Blackwood and Associates is providing Conservation Architect supervision and Rosanne Meenan is providing archaeological oversight and were both on-site on Saturday as was local Bat Conservation expert Brian Keeley who undertook some habitat monitoring.

This project was made possible thanks to funding from the National Monuments Service – Archaeology Community Monuments Fund 2020.

Good News: Great news last week, to see that the future of the Bailieborough Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre has been secured. This terrific amenity has meant so much to the local community over the past 20 years or so. In these times where funerals are limited to only a very few close family our chance to support people during bereavement is limited. So, we wondered if we could revive an old tradition that would show people that their loss is noticed and shared by us all?

It would mean the world to families in a time of sadness.

Bailieborough Library: The current Level 5 lockdown unfortunately means that the Libraries in Cavan are closed for the next 4 weeks. Thanks to the Borrow Box app, that doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on good audio and E-books.

Here is how it works:

• Access the Borrow Box app via the Online Services tab on the Cavan Libraries Website: http://www.cavanlibrary.ie/Default.aspx?StructureID_str=126

• Scroll down and select Borrow Box (eBooks and eAudio Books) and click on ‘Access Borrow Box’.

• When prompted enter your library card number (the 14 digit number on the back of your card) and your 4 digit pin.

• Use the search function on Borrow Box to make your selection or request a title.

• Your book will appear on the device with which you select it and remain there for three weeks, after which it will automatically return to Borrow Box.

If you have trouble accessing Borrow Box or don’t know your pin, feel free to call your local branch or to contact us via our Facebook pages. Our doors may be closed but we are ready and happy to help you in any way we can.

Killann Parish: Masses:  No public Masses for the time being due to Covid  restrictions. Masses will be said at usual Bailieborough times and may be viewed on our webcam or heard on our radio system at 107.8FM. At Level 4 of the Covid plan, weddings and funerals may take place, but with a maximum attendence of 6 people for weddings and 25 people for Funerals. This will be the case for the foreseeable future.

Baptisms: No Baptisms will take place, except in the cases of emergency while we remain in Level 4. When we return to Level 3, Baptisms may take place but only the parents, child and godparents may attend. As people know, the issue is not the gatherings in church, but the gathering that may take place in the home afterwards.

Halloween ‘Fright Night’: Unfortunately due to Covid restrictions we’ve had to cancel our ‘Scary Walk’ night. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused but we must put everyone’s safety first.

Bailieborough Group of Parishes: Services: Due to level 4 restrictions we cannot meet in our Church buildings, so our service this week will be on Facebook (or on YouTube under ‘bailieborough group of parishes’ from 10:30am this Sunday 25^th  October.

St. Vincent DePaul Shop: Due to the Government decision to go to level 4, we unfortunately have to close our shop in Bailieborough until at least Tuesday, 10^th  November.

October—Month of the Holy Rosary: The Rosary will be recited at the Grotto on the Virginia Road every evening except Saturdays for the month of October. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in the prayers for their own intentions.

Bailieborough Red Cross:   We continue to be available to assist any one still staying at home. If you have GP or Hospital appointments or require medication delivery’s .

You can still borrow items! You just have to call / email the Library service first and arrange a time to collect.
