Bailieborough News Thursday 24th September 2015

Bailieborough News. September 24th 2015. Matthew J. Cullen.

n

Pledge of the Metalmen’ was unveiled by Heather Humphreys. Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in Bailieborough, Co. Cavan on Tuesday 15th September. The piece by Barry Linnane was funded by the Building Peace through the Arts Programme.

Heather Humphrey’s Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht performed the official launch. She was assisted by Lorraine McDowell, Director of Operations, Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Paddy Smith, Chairman of Cavan Co. Council. Also Paddy Sheanon, Bailieborough Chair of Building Peace through the Arts, members of the Bailieborough Heritage Society,  Joe O’Reilly TD, Councillors, Paddy McDonald, Fergal Curtin and Clifford Kelly along with local historians, former Bailieborough Foundry Workers, local schoolchildren and members of the general public were present at the unveiling.

This project aimed to create a public artwork of excellence which captures the past, present and future aspirations of the people of Bailieborough. Through a consultation process as part of stage one of this project Joanne Behan, artist facilitator sought opinion from the people of Bailieborough as to what gave them a sense of pride in Bailieborough.  Many ideas were forthcoming including the rich heritage of the town, the tradition of literature and drama in the county and the writers who are associated with the town, the music and sporting achievements of the area and the inspirational landscape. The theme ‘Forging Ahead’ was finally identified and through an open process Barry Linnane, sculptor was selected to create Pledge of the Metalmen. This art work acknowledges the work of the men in the Bailieborough Foundry. It symbolises what can be achieved when people work together and the value of our industrial heritage.

Roisin McDonough of The Arts Council of Northern Ireland said:

‘The Building Peace through the Arts Programme has at its core the ability to bring communities together, through creative, arts-led engagement. As Stage two of the programme draws to a close, we are delighted to unveil a number of impressive artworks across Northern Ireland and the border counties. County Cavan is no exception and I am delighted that the people of Bailieborough, together with the sculptor Barry Linnane, have produced this fabulous piece of public art, Pledge of the Metalmen. It is our sincere hope that this wonderful artwork will change the landscape of Bailieborough and leave a positive, lasting legacy that celebrates its heritage through true community engagement.’

Barry Linnane, artist said: ‘I really wanted to create a sculpture for Bailieborough that would reflect the value of the industrial heritage of the town. For me the symbol of two men working together pouring molten iron provides a strong sense of achievement and the trust involved in working in busy industrial settings. I have worked all my life in foundries and it is great to be able to celebrate this intense and precise work that can achieve objects of permanence and beauty. Marilyn Gaffney worked as artist facilitator with me on this project and she visited the schools in Bailieborough and talked to the children about what they like about Bailieborough.  I have included a sense of this in the plaque that the men are pouring’.

Paddy Sheanon, Bailieborough Chair of BPttA who guided this project from the application stage two years ago said:  ‘We have enjoyed working with our community on this project. Many community groups participated in workshops at the Library, in the Schools, the Bailieborough School of Music, sporting, heritage and women’s interest groups all had a say. Our community has learned about public art through this process. We believe that Barry Linnane has created a sculpture for Bailieborough that is a testimony to our rich heritage. It reinforces for us what we can gain from valuing each other and working together’.

Election as Deputy Chairman of Cavan and Monaghan  ETB

It is a great honour to be selected unopposed today in Kingscourt by my Cavan and Monaghan ETB colleagues to serve as Deputy Chairman for 2015 to 2016″ Seán McKiernan has stated.

“I look forward to working in the coming year with Monagahn County Councillor Cathy Bennett of Sinn Fein, the new Chairwoman

The new ETB, entering its 3rd year, has proven itself to be much more than an amalgamation of the Cavan and Monaghan VECs. It is a dynamic, innovative and results focused organisation delivering top quality educational opportunities to both young and old in the 2 Counties” stated Mr. McKiernan.

“As Deputy Chairman, I will support the new Chairwoman and C.E.O. in ensuring a successful delivery of the new Dun a Ri College in Kingscourt for September 2016, the much anticipated substantial extension to Breifne College in Cavan Town and the pursuit of a modern single campus solution for our highly successful Cavan Institute” he said.

“Finally, as a board member of Bailieborough Community School, where the ETB is a co-patron along with Bishop Leo O’Reilly, I look forward to the delivery of the Special Needs Unit sanctioned for the school. The school now also has a new roof and carpark, and I will now be campaigning for a modern P.E. Hall as well” concluded Mr. McKiernan.

Seán McKiernan, a former member of Cavan County Council and Co. Cavan V.E.C. represents the Disability Federation of Ireland and AHEAD on Cavan and Monaghan ETB.

Fianna Fáil holds second “Campaign Bootcamp” for prospective women candidates

Fianna Fáil is continuing with its campaign to support prospective female candidates by hosting a second “Campaign Bootcamp: A Toolkit for Women” event in Galway.  Up to 50 members attended the seminar, which was held in the Harbour Hotel in Galway on Saturday 12th September.  The conference is part of a suite of measures being adopted by the party following the publication of the Markievicz Commission Report earlier this year.

Newly elected President of Fianna Fáil Women’s Network Cllr Niamh Smyth, who addressed the seminar, said, “Fianna Fáil is conscious of the importance of women’s participation in politics and has arranged a series of seminars across the country to provide a forum for members to meet and get advice and support about how they can maximise their involvement at local and national level.  We have already held a successful workshop in Dublin and are very pleased with the participation level in Galway.

“Members at the seminar were given an insight into real campaign experiences from former Minister Mary O’Rourke and current General Election candidate for Galway West Cllr. Mary Hoade.  Sessions discussing campaign management and planning as well as fundraising and communications were run throughout the day.

“Fianna Fáil is determined to advance its current support structures to encourage higher female participation in the party.  Through initiatives such as Campaign Bootcamp and the Women’s Network we are confident that we can encourage a new generation of women to enter into politics”.

Smyth Elected President of Fianna Fáil Women’s Network*

Cavan Councillor Niamh Smyth has been elected as President of the Fianna Fáil Women’s Network.  The Network was established in March and is one of the initiatives being rolled out as part of the Markievicz Commission Report recommendations, which aims to increase female participation in Fianna Fáil.

Over the past number of weeks almost 2,000 female party members cast their votes for the position of President and Secretary.  Following the count last night Cavan County Councillor Niamh Smyth was elected President and Donegal PRO Aine McGinley was elected as Secretary of the Fianna Fáil Women’s Network.

Speaking after her election Cllr. Smyth commented, “I am honoured to have been chosen to be President of this very important body.  The Fianna Fáil Women’s Network will play a key role, not only in the months ahead, but in local and General Elections for years to come, as we aim to encourage and support more women to enter the political arena.  The publication of the Markievicz Report earlier this year was a major milestone for this party as it set out a roadmap to increase female participation in politics.

“The Fianna Fáil Women’s Network will provide a forum for the thousands of women who are active within this party within their communities and constituencies to come together as well as a support structure for those contesting elections over the next months and years.  It is a huge opportunity for our party to build on the strong female participation that we already enjoy and bring it to the next level and I look forward to working with the members on issues that affect all of us”.

Ms. McGinley added, “I am proud to have been elected as Secretary of the Fianna Fáil Women’s Network and am excited to be embarking on this positive new venture.  Our party has a proud tradition of gender equality, which must be embraced and advanced.  Not only must we attract new female members, we must ensure that women’s rights are promoted at a national level through the Network itself but also by encompassing the mainstream party structures.  We have been presented with a constructive challenge and I look forward to welcoming women right across the country into the Network”.

Bailieborough News Thursday August 27th 2015.

Bailieborough News. August 27th 2015. Matthew J. Cullen.

Mr. Michael McKenna:

It was with great sadness and regret that the community learned of the death of very popular local man, Mr Michael McKenna, 13 Tandragee, Bailieborough at his residence on Monday, August 10th, following a short illness.

Born on the 19th of August 1944, Michael was originally a native of Kingscourt. In his younger days, he attended Kingscourt National School. After leaving school, Michael worked on a local farm and then worked for a local haulier doing the Milk run. In 1963, Michael commenced work in Gypsum Industries and he worked there for the next 42 years until he retired in 2005.

Michael met his future wife—Una Reilly, Killinkere—in 1967 and they married in 1971—in fact they would have celebrated their 44th Wedding Anniversary on August 11th. In the early years of their marriage, Michael and Una lived in Killinkere and they moved into Tandragee in Bailieborough in 1973. In their married life, Michael and Una had seven children and theirs was a happy and cheerful household.   In his spare time, Michael was passionate about cars and he took great pride in their upkeep and appearance. He was also a noted gardener and kept his gardens in pristine condition.

Michael was a man of very deep faith and he was one of the co-ordinators of the Holy Hour Adoration in St. Annes. He partook in many pilgrimages to Lourdes, Medjugorje, Fatima, Knock and Lough Derg. He was the only male member of the local Legion of Mary and he regularly visited and prayed for those who were ill in the community and he was also a familiar face to the residents of the nearby, Fairlawns Nursing home.  Michael was a genuine, gentle, family orientated and quiet man whose presence in the community will be deeply missed.

Predeceased by his daughters, Majella and Bernadette, Michael is survived by his loving wife, Una, son, Michael (Bailieborough), daughters: Mrs Siobhan Donohoe (Tunnyduff), Mrs Helena O’Grady (Bailieborough), Trina (do) and Amanda (do), sons in-law, grandchildren: Michael, Rebecca, Cian, Odhran, Aine, Dylan and Kyle, to whom deepest sympathy is extended.

Michael was predeceased by his sister, Mrs Angela Johnston (RIP) (Kingscourt) and is survived by his brothers: Sean (Kingscourt), Kevin (Belturbet) and Noel (Kingscourt), sisters: Mary (Kingscourt), Mrs Rita Clarke (Muff), Mrs Lily Shankey (Nobber), Mrs Bernie Farrelly (Ardlow, Virginia) and Mrs Barbara O’Reilly (Ardee), brothers in-law, sisters in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and a wide circle of friends.

A very large attendance was present at the removal of Michael’s remains from his residence to St. Anne’s Chapel on Wednesday evening, August 12th and following Requiem Mass in St. Annes on Thursday morning, August 13th—at which Fr. Michael Router P.P. officiated assisted by the Bailieborough Folk Choir—his remains were laid to rest in St. Anne’s Cemetery.

Following on from last week’s item about the theft of items from St. Anne’s Cemetery, Navan Gardaí have posted the following:  Do you own these property items recovered by Navan Gardaí? There are two dozen Flower pots of various sizes and colours. The items recovered appears to include geraniums, hydrangeas, orchids, and a number of other flowers. The items in question were recovered by Navan Gardaí, who are keen to hand them back to their original owners. Anyone with any information about where they might have come from is encouraged to contact Navan Gardaí station on 0469021445. Maybe some of the items recovered belong to the families that had items stolen from their graves in St. Annes?

The final round sees the boys head to Cootehill to play the hosts on Wednesday next before the finals night on the 29th in Breffni.

Under 16; A six point defeat to Cootehill in the Monaghan league on Monday last doesn’t tell the whole story of what was a very competitive game. Some very promising performances throughout the squad.

Training times and venues; If blitz on then no training.

Under 6/8/10; Kingscourt group;
