Blessing of the Graves: Thank you to all who attended the Blessing of the Graves in St. Anne’s Cemetery on Sunday week last. As usual there was a very large crowd present. Thank you to the Church stewards, who managed the parking and traffic very well and to the Pastoral Council who organised the ceremony and who, along with members of the Finance committee, took up the collection, which this year, thanks to your generous contributions, amounted to €4,504. Thank you also to the members of the Community Employment Scheme who had the cemetery looking so well, to the readers, the local Legion of Mary who led the Rosary and to Tracey Carroll who played beautiful instrumental pieces during the Service.
End of an Era: This Friday, September 13th sees the closure of the Post Office, on Main Street at 4.30pm. It is the ‘end of an era’ for Catherine O’Reilly and her family and staff, who have served in the Post Office for many, many years. On behalf of the community in Bailieborough and surrounding areas, we thank you for your excellent service and wish you well in your retirement.
The new Post Office—at the rear of ‘Super-Valu—will open on Monday morning, September 16th at 10.30am. We wish, Lorraine Harris, all the best in taking over this mainstay, of the local community.
Bailieborough Development Association are proud to announce that Phase 1 and 2 of Bailieborough Courthouse regeneration project is complete. We are inviting interested parties who would like to use the space to give us a call for a viewing. The spaces comprise, individual pay per day Hot Desk, Meeting Space, Training Space, Rehearsal and Performance space, Studio space. Balloon Release: Annual Balloon Release to remember our loved ones who died by Suicide will take place at Lough Sillan Lake Shercock on Friday next, 13th September at 6pm. Songs will be sung and a few words said to remember those gone too soon. Please bring your own helium balloons. Everyone welcome.
Bailieborough Social Day Centre: The Bailieborough Social Day Centre will be starting back on this Wednesday, September 11th from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, in the Community Centre, Chapel Road, for the usual entertainment. New members are always most welcome.
Trad Musicians Wanted: Calling all amateur traditional musicians. Bailieborough Development Association would like to encourage amateur musicians to come together to share their musical skills and have the craic. This is a social programme, designed to get people out of isolation and to socialise and share skills. Call 042-969-4716 for further information.
Vincent’s Shop: Some of our current volunteers said that they first volunteered with us to meet new people, make a difference in their local community and felt that it was a good way to spend their free time. We at Vincents, on Main St., Bailieborough are currently looking to add to our current set-up of volunteers, mainly to cover Saturday mornings from 10.00am to 1pm, every Saturday. Deepest Condolences: Deepest Sympathy is extended to the family of Eugene Farrelly (Raheny) and formerly Bailieborough, Co. Cavan, who passed away on Saturday, 31st August 2019, peacefully, at home. Beloved husband of Brenda and father of Jacqueline, Miriam, Brenda, Eoghan, Nessa and Aideen, grandfather to Amy, Neal, Eamonn, Aoife, Neasa, Emma, Ben, Ella, Aida and Alex, brother to Patricia and Vera; sadly missed by his daughter and sons in law Caroline, Gerry, Edward, David and Nessa’s partner Phil, extended family and friends, Eugene was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Frank, Philip, Mary, James, Julia, Mary, John, Bridie, Maud, his twin sister Agneta, Eddie, Tim, and Kevin. Eugene’s Funeral Mass took place in the St John the Evangelist Church, Kilbarrack, Dublin 5, on Monday, September 2nd followed by burial in St. Fintan’s Cemetery, Sutton.
Beginners Irish: Six week Beginners Irish course starting at the Library on Tuesday, September 17th from 10.30am-12.30pm. The classes are facilitated by Cavan/ Monaghan Education and Training Board and are FREE. Classes will be informal and relaxed and all interested please ring library at 042 9665779.
Bowls: Bailieborough Community Bowls resume in the Community Centre on Wednesday, September 11th at 8.00pm and every Wednesday thereafter, for the new Bowls season. New members—both male and female are most welcome.
Arrangements for Booking Bailieborough Community Centre: Contact or call into the Parish Office during it’s public opening hours to request a booking form. The booking form will need to include insurance and child safeguarding—if applicable—details for your group. The charge for use of the Centre is €10 per hour including set-up and clean-up time. For stand-alone events this charge is payable at the time of booking. For a long term booking, an arrangement can be made with the Parish Office to pay after an agreed period of time. If paying by cheque please make it out to—Bailieborough Church No 2 A/C. The user is liable for all damages to the hall incurred during the period of use. The Bailieborough Church Area Finance Committee has the right to refuse any booking.
Walk, Jog, Run or Crawl! Run, walk, crawl or jog every Monday and Wednesday evenings at the Community Centre, Chapel Road, Bailieborough at 8pm. It’s free!!!! And there is no catch! All newcomers welcome. Also the Saturday morning Leisure Group Cycle is back and takes place on Saturday mornings leaving from the Community Centre, Bailieborough at 9.00AM. St. Vincent DePaul Annual Pilgrimage to Knock: The Annual St. Vincent DePaul Pilgrimage to Knock will take place on Saturday next, September 14th. A bus will be leaving the Community Centre at 8.30am. Bookings with €15 bus fare can be made in Vincent’s Shop, Main St., Bailieborough by Saturday, August 31st.
Moybologue Historical Society: After the success of ‘Moybologue and the parishes of East Cavan; 1400 – 1800’ in October 2018, Moybologue Historical Society – Cumann Seanchais Mhaigh Bolg is delighted to welcome Monsignor Liam Kelly back to Tierworker for ‘Culture Night‘ 2019 with a talk on ‘Culture Night: The Battle Of Coolnahinch and other troubles in the 1790s,’ in St. Mary’s Hall, Tierworker on Friday 20th September at 8:30pm.
Monsignor Kelly is a native of County Leitrim and is current Diocesan Administrator of the Diocese of Kilmore. He was appointed Vicar General of the Diocese of Kilmore in 2015. He is a noted historian and has written several books, his most recent one being The Diocese of Kilmore c,1100-1800 which was published in 2017. Join us on the night to hear his insights into the troubled and tragic events at nearby Coolnahinch in November 1793.
As with all our talks and events, admission is free of charge, refreshments will be served and all are welcome.

Harvest Mission :Between Sunday, 29th September and Wednesday, 2nd October, The Bailieborough Group of Church of Ireland Parishes will be taking part in a diocese wide harvest mission called ‘Gathered In’. All of the mission events are open to everyone and anyone who wants to come along. Here are some notable times and events:
Sunday 29th September at 3pm outside Knockbride Church, Community Tractor Service – polish up the Tractor and bring it out to pray for the harvest.
Tuesday 1st October at 11am Coffee morning in the Rectory, 7:30pm Wholeness and Healing Service in Bailieborough Church.
Wednesday 2nd October 8pm in the Bailie Hotel, Johnny Cash ‘Walking the Line’ – David Kelly sings the songs of Johnny Cash and relays the ups ad downs of Johnny’s spiritual life story.

Walking programme for people recovering from Cancer:
The Irish Cancer Society’s, Strides for Life walking programme will start in September. The Strides for Life is a walking programme developed for people recovering from cancer treatment. The programme is organised by Cuan, Cavan cancer support centre and will take place in the grounds of the Farnham Estate and Spa Resort, who have very kindly allowed the use of their grounds. Strides for Life, caters for all levels of ability and comprises of a weekly group walk and an individual training programme. Family members or friends are also welcome. The Bailieborough Poetry Festival 2019:
The 7th Bailieborough Poetry Festival will take place this year from 3rd to 5th October.
The Bailieborough Poetry Prize competition is now open. Closing date for entry is Friday next, 6th September 2019.
First prize of €300 for winning poem. Each poem must not exceed 50 lines, and should be typed, single-spaced. The competition is open to anybody who has reached their 18th birthday by the 6th September 2019. Up to three poems may be submitted per entry. You may submit as many entries as you wish. A fee of €5 per poem or 3 poems for €10 is payable. Payment should be made via the PayPal button. Further details may be found on www.bailieboroughpoetry.com
Welcome Fr. Ultan McGoohan and Fr. Rafal Siwek: Last weekend the Parish welcomed Fr. Ultan McGoohaan as Parish Priest and Fr. Rafal Siwek as Curate to the Parish of Killann. We are very blessed to have Fr. Ultan and Fr. Rafal working with us in this Parish and we warmly welcome them as they begin their ministry here. We pray for God’s blessing on them.
Ordination: The Bailieborough Group of Presbyterian Churches which comprises of Trinity Bailieborough, First Bailieborough (Corglass), Corraneary and Ervey are eagerly awaiting the Ordination and Installation of their new Minister. After ten years of ministry in Bailieborough, the Rev Sam Anketell retired four years ago and since then the group has remained vacant. On Saturday next, September 7th at 3pm in Corglass Church, Mr John O’Donnell a native of Clonmel will be Ordained and Installed as minister. John, his wife Sarah and their son Timothy have already taken up residence in Corglass Manse.
Farewell: Last weekend the Parish said ‘Goodbye’ to Fr. Joseph Fidelis Bature as he returns to Rome for a short time before he goes to his home diocese of Maiduguri in North Eastern Nigeria. The Community thank him for his time here with us in Bailieborough and wish him well on his return home.

Heritage Week: ‘Walking Among the Dead’: Bailieborough Heritage Society will host a ‘Walk Among the Dead’ as part of Heritage Week. The walk will take place on Saturday next, August 24th from 11am to 12 noon at the Old Church of Ireland Graveyard entrance. We will lead a tour of this graveyard. Along the way we will highlight the more interesting epitaphs and the lives of the people interred therein and those who died during the famine.
This old church and graveyard is behind the Church of Ireland at the junction of Main Street and Church St. Bailieborough. Cars may access the site from the Shercock Road. Parking available at the BDA Centre. Admission is free. For further information, please contact, 0872244159.

The Bailieborough Poetry Festival 2019:
The 7th Bailieborough Poetry Festival will take place this year from 3rd to 5th October. Building on previous years’ events we have a refreshing group of poets, artists, readers and musicians.
In keeping with past festivals, the festival will open with an art exhibition by Cavan-based artist, Jim McPartlin on the Thursday of the weekend in the arts space of Bailieborough Library. This will be followed by LitLab readings. Over the course of the weekend there will be poetry workshops by visiting poets aimed at participants at all levels of writing experience, interviews, open mic events, the presentation of the Bailieborough Poetry prize and a walking tour of local literary places of interest.
This year’s festival welcomes recently appointed Writer-in-Residence, Anthony J Quinn, who has already become involved in numerous projects in the county and across the pre-Brexit border. He hails from County Tyrone and will be reading his own work and providing advice for aspiring writers.
Visiting poets this year will include Pat Boran and Moya Cannon both of whom will be conducting workshops on the Saturday morning of the festival. Early booking is advised as the workshops are always oversubscribed. Cavan poet Kate Ennals will also feature this year.
The Bailieborough Poetry Prize competition is now open. Closing date for entry is Friday, 6th September 2019.
First prize of €300 for winning poem. Each poem must not exceed 50 lines, and should be typed, single-spaced. The competition is open to anybody who has reached their 18th birthday by the 6th September 2019. Up to three poems may be submitted per entry. You may submit as many entries as you wish. Regretted Death: Deepest Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Andrew (Andy) Hall, Lear, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan, who passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home, Virginia on Monday, August 12th. Andy was predeceased by his parents, James and Ethel and brother Jim. Andy’s Funeral Service took place in Corglass Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, August 14th with burial afterwards in the adjoining graveyard.

Cemetery Sunday: The annual Blessing of the Graves in St. Anne’s Cemetery will take place on Sunday, September 1st at 12 noon. Each family is asked to bring along a small container of water, which will be blessed during the service. This water will be sprinkled by a family member on the grave before the recitation of the Rosary.
All church stewards are asked to assist with parking and report to the car park at the graveyard by 10.45am. Those attending are kindly requested to follow the instructions of the stewards and to co-operate with them at all times. Members of the Parish Pastoral Council and Finance Committee will take up a collection for the upkeep of the cemetery, at various different locations before and after the ceremony. Please give as generously as you can.
Citizen’s Information: The service takes place every Tuesday from 1.30pm to 2.30pm in the Library— providing information, advice and advocacy supports to everyone on Social welfare, employment, Pensions, Health, Tax etc. No appointment necessary.
‘Walk for Willow’: The first Anniversary ‘Walk for Willow’ will take place on Saturday, August 31st. This event will host a walk, run and cycle in memory of Baby Willow Clarke and all the beautiful babies who have learned to fly instead of walk. There will be two parts to the event with a 50k/80k Cycle commencing at 10am from the Community Centre, Chapel Road. Registration will be from 9am and the entry fee is €20. The second part of the event is a 5k/10k Walk, Run or Crawl which will commence at 12.30pm, with registration from 12 noon. Entry fees are €10 or €15 for a family. All proceeds will go to Feileacain Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Association of Ireland. All donations greatly appreciated and all are most welcome to come along and participate in the events.
St. Vincent DePaul Annual Pilgrimage to Knock: The Annual St. Vincent DePaul Pilgrimage to Knock will take place on Saturday, September 14th. A bus will be leaving the Community Centre at 8.30am. Bookings with €15 bus fare can be made in Vincent’s Shop, Main St., Bailieborough by Saturday, August 31st.

Walking programme for people recovering from Cancer:
The Irish Cancer Society’s, Strides for Life walking programme will start in September. The Strides for Life is a walking programme developed for people recovering from cancer treatment. The programme is organised by Cuan, Cavan cancer support centre and will take place in the grounds of the Farnham Estate and Spa Resort, who have very kindly allowed the use of their grounds. Strides for Life, caters for all levels of ability and comprises of a weekly group walk and an individual training programme. Family members or friends are also welcome.
