Mrs. Mary Burmiston (nee Fisher): The death of Mrs Mary Burmiston (nee Fisher), Tandragee, Bailieborough occurred recently following a short illness in Cavan General Hospital.
Mary was one of thirteen children born to Adam and Annie Fisher, Killinkere, Co. Cavan. She attended school in Lisnagirl, Killinkere and this was followed by working positions both North and South of the border. From this, Mary developed into the lovely lady everyone knew and admired.
Mary married Jim Burmiston at the young age of 18 and became the devoted mother of Jimmy, David (died shortly after birth), Ann, Carol, Richie and Elizabeth. Jim died suddenly in July, 1983, leaving Mary with a young family and she took on the role of a single parent with love, enthusiasm and dedication. Mary was a very fun loving and outdoor person—anywhere there was a group of people forming, she wanted to be there for a bit of craic—as she would put it. She was a very keen dancer and loved nothing better than getting all dressed up in her finery and heading off to the ‘Ballroom of Romance Halls’ and dancing the night away with Michael, Ella and all of her many friends. She loved being involved with the local Red Cross and in particular, helping out at the Old Folks Party—although she never thought herself as one. She also became involved and performed in the plays that were produced locally. The Charity shop was also one of her favourite places, having a laugh with Sister Mary and the Ladies.
It was also known, that if Mary had something to say—it was said—tact was not always high on her list but that was part of what made her the lovely person that she was. Most of all, Mary will be remembered for her love of children.
Mary is survived by her children: Jimmy, Ann, Carol, Richie and Elizabeth. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Robert, Trevor, Melissa, Jeff, Simon, Alma, Calvin, Matthew, Asha and Ross her eight great grandchildren, the McBrierty family, all the children in Tandragee, as well as the countless others who were lucky enough to know, love and be loved by Mary right up until the end.
The loss of Mary is especially felt by her four surviving siblings, Essie in Canningstown, Adam in Kells, Isabel in Bangor and Jimmy in Canada.
Mary’s Funeral Service took place in Bailieborough Parish Church and she was laid to rest in the adjoining new cemetery.
Relaghbeg Fundraising Committee:
We just wanted to say a Huge Big ‘Thank You’ to everybody that helped out over the last few days with getting the Marquee ready, making sandwiches and goodies for the walkers. All our stewards, the Red Cross who were on hand if needed, Bridie Rahill Cabs for providing the return shuttle bus for the walk, all the gang at Smyth’s Bar, Relaghbeg for providing the venue and for looking after us so well as always, ‘Say La V’ for helping us rock into the wee hours and last but by no means least, you guys for coming out and supporting us!! There is still one last event for Enable Ireland Children Services North East so plenty of time to donate to the charity if you missed out… We really appreciate all your help and support THANK YOU!!!!

Irish Wildlife Trust: Nature Day:
As part of Biodiversity Week, 2015, the Irish Wildlife Trust are holding a ‘Nature Day’ on Sunday next, May 17th at Janet McGuigan’s Nature Garden at the Stonewall, Bailieborough. Activities will commence at 1.00pm and there will be something to keep everyone occupied. A Scavenger Hunt, I—Spy, a Wildlife Treasure Hunt, are some of the planned events. Go for a walk along the old Celtic lane at the back entrance to the house and tick off the list what you can see or collect along the way! Make a ‘Bird Box’ or Insect House’—use wood or bring your own container! Go on an ‘Insect Safari’ around the garden! Draw and/ or Paint a plant or animal! How many birds, animals and flowers, can you find? Quiz—what’s up that tree? Match up as many as you can! Look for tree and plant seedlings in the garden. Cavan Birdwatch:
Dawn Chorus events are scheduled for Sunday next, 17th May at 4.30 a.m. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about birdsong and enjoy an early morning walk at dawn.
Walks will take place at the following locations; Bailieborough: Castle Lake Forest. Meet at the Lakeshore car park (Lear Entrance).
Killeshandra: meet at Town Lake.

The Friends of Virginia Health Centre:
The Friends of Virginia Community Health Centre, Residential and Day Care Services—are a voluntary group who visit resident’s, provide comforts, organise entertainment and stimulating activities in the Centre.
Currently the Group are Fund-Raising to enhance the Grounds of the Centre, through Tree and Shrub planting and the inclusion of a Wild Flower Meadow. The Group are holding a ‘Coffee Morning’ in the Centre on Wednesday, May 13th, 2015 between 10am and 3pm. Your support would be very much appreciated. Mindfullness Meditation Course: Mind Full or Mindful? :
Mindfullness is the practise of being attentively present. It is called a practice in the same way that we say that people practice the piano. Being attentive is a skill that grows with practice. The practice is simply to relax and bring forth an awareness of what is happening in the present. During the four week introductory course, the basic instructions of Mindfullness Meditation are given sequentially, each week building on the previous one.
The venue is the Virginia Show Centre on May 20th, 27th, June 3rd and 10th from 7.30pm to 9.00pm. Fee: €15 per session. Essential items: Wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a rug/mat, cushion and warm blanket. For further information and booking, please contact Sheena at 083 105 6111. Recently held Charity Cycle for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund and Temple Street, Children’s Hospital:
The organisers would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated in the Charity Cycle and walk for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund and Temple St Hospital. There were 80 brave cyclists who took on the 72 kilometres of rolling Cavan countryside and 50 people who completed the lovely walk of the local forest.
We would like to thank Tesco Bailieborough for the use of their premises. The following suppliers for kindly making donations, Fresh Today for the fruit, Irish Pride, Pat the Baker, McCluskeys, Manorhill and Farmbake for bread and Smiths Londis (Slane) for water.
Thanks also to the local Bailieborough Credit Union for their sponsorship donations to both these charities. This event was only possible due to great local support and we very much appreciate help from all the marshals and anyone who helped out on the day.
Bailieborough Walking Group:
The final walk hosted by Bailieborough Walking Group in association with Cavan Walking Festival takes place on Thursday next, May 7th. Leaving Bailieborough Library at 6.50pm. Walk commences at the picnic area, Lough an Leagh at 7.15pm. This will be a one and a half hour strenuous walk. Wednesday night walks recommence on May 13th in Deerpark Forest, Virginia.
ALZHEIMER TEA PARTY:
Many thanks to all those who supported the above Tea Day. Special thanks to the Bailie Hotel for once again putting their facilities at our disposal. If you haven’t already given and would like to donate, the fund, which is now at €465, will be open for a short while.

Plaque Unveiling:
Heather Humphreys Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht will unveil an Ulster History Circle ‘Blue Plaque’ at Trinity Presbyterian Church on this Friday, May 8th at 7pm.
The plaque will honour Anne Jane Carlile, Temperance Pioneer, co-founder of the Band of Hope, in Leeds, U.K., in 1847. Representatives of Cavan County Council, the Ulster History Circle and the Ulster-Scots Agency will be in attendance. After the unveiling refreshments will be served and everyone is most welcome to attend.
Holy Hour:
The monthly ‘Holy Hour’—hosted by Direction for Our Times will take place on Thursday evening, May 7th in St Anne’s Church, beginning at 8 p.m. This will be followed by the Sacrament of Reconciliation. All are welcome.

All Ireland Camogie Success for Cavan :
Congratulations to Cavan Minor Camogie Team who won the All Ireland Minor Shield Competition recently. They defeated Monaghan on a scoreline of 2-06 to 0-04.
Credit to these talented bunch of girls for their sheer determination and commitment throughout the year and also to their trainers. Well done all.

They are in charge of our local playground. They fundraise for projects that improve our community and they make all surrounding areas a safe place to live. East Cavan Gaels GAA Hurling –Club News 4th May 2015
Shane Mulholland: Shane was laid to rest on Tuesday last in Derrylin. The large representative attendance showed how far and wide his talent had reached in Antrim, Fermanagh and Cavan.

U6/8/10; The next blitz is scheduled for this coming Wednesday in one of our local club venues with Carrick and Blayney. All players will receive a text.
U12; The final round of the Spring league sees the boys away to play Annalee Gaels on Wednesday next.
U14/16/18; Training continues for these boys with the next round of U16 on Monday next, 11th May, v Inniskeen. U17 and Minor competitions coming up soon.
Féile na nGael 2015; East Cavan Gaels Hurling will once again play host to this national celebration of hurling. We will host Caiseal Gaels from Mayo for the weekend. Some changes in format gives us a great opportunity to showcase the hurling talent that we have locally.
The action starts on Friday 19th June in Bailieborough with two games in St. Anne’s Park, Bailieborough GAA. Lots of activities lined up in what should be another spectacular weekend for local hurling so mark June 19-21st in your diary.

Charity Cycle for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund and Temple Street
The organisers would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated in the Charity Cycle and walk for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund and Temple St Hospital. There were 80 brave cyclists who took on the 72 kilometres of rolling Cavan countryside and 50 people who completed the lovely walk of the local forest.
We would like to thank Tesco Bailieborough for the use of their premises. The following suppliers for kindly making donations, Fresh Today for the fruit, Irish Pride, Pat the Baker, McCluskeys, Manorhill & Farmbake for bread and Smiths Londis (Slane) for water.
Thanks also to the local Bailieborough Credit Union for their sponsorship donations to both these charities. This event was only possible due to great local support and we very much appreciate help from all the marshals and anyone who helped out on the day.

Bailieborough Fianna Fáil Cumann hosts ‘Cumann na Mban’ History Lecture:
On 2nd April 1914, over 100 women gathered in Dublin to discuss the role of women in the lead-up to revolution. They became Cumann na mBan – an organisation whose role in achieving Irish independence is almost forgotten. The meeting, at Wynn’s Hotel, was presided over by Agnes O’ Farrelly.
They adopted a constitution which stated their aims were:
– To Advance the cause of Irish liberty
– To organise Irish women in the furtherance of that objective
– To assist in arming and equipping a body of Irish men for the defence of Ireland
-To form a fund for these purposes to be called the ‘Defence of Ireland Fund’.
Bailieborough Fianna Fáil Cumann in preparation for the 1916 Celebrations are delighted to announce we are hosting an historical lecture on ‘Cumann na mBan’. Our guest speaker for this event is Dr Mary Aluiffe, Cumann na mBan resource officer and executive member of the Women’s History Association of Ireland, UCD. This event will be held in the Wesleyan Chapel Arts and Cultural Centre, Bailieborough on Thursday next, the 30th April at 8pm.
This event is open to everyone and your attendance would be much appreciated to this historical event.
Motor racing champion Simon McKinley (34) was a “hero and an idol” to people in the sport, his funeral ceremony was told today.
Mr McKinley’s remains were brought to the Seamus Ennis Centre in Naul village this morning for the ceremony to celebrate his life which was officiated by humanist celebrant Brian Whiteside.
His coffin was adorned with white and red roses, trophies he had won over his prestigious career and his racing helmet.
A guard of honour was provided by his friends from the world of motor racing. They had travelled from all over the country.
His widow Deirdre told mourners that Simon proposed to her in 2012 and they were married six months later.
Their son Rory arrived in 2014. “Simon relished every moment with him,” she said.
Bailieborough’s Walk for All (part of Cavan Walking Festival):
Spring into Summer by joining Bailieborough Walking Group on Saturday 2nd May at 11am.
3 walks on one day – a 3km Summer Nature Trail with wildlife, bug and scavenger hunting and lots of surprises for kids and grown ups!. A 5.5k guided walk around the beautiful Castle Lake or choose to put your rambling boots on and take an 8k off trail Forest Ramble with experienced guides. There’s something for everyone, come along and let Bailieborough’s beauty surprise you.
On Tuesday May 5th walkers will assemble at Dun a Rí Forest Park (Shercock Rd. entrance) at 7.15pm. There will be a choice of a 1 hour or a 1.5 hour walk. On Thursday May 7th walkers will assemble at the picnic area of Lough an Leagh at 7.15pm for a 1.5 hour strenuous walk. Wednesday evening walks commence on May 13th at Deerpark Forest Virginia.
First Communion:
The children from St. Anne’s and the Model Schools will make their First Communion on Saturday, May 16th and the children from St. Felim’s on Saturday, May 23rd. Both Masses will be at 11.30am.
BAILIEBORO TECHNICAL SCHOOL (TECH) 50th ANNIVERSARY REUNION:
The 50th anniversary of the opening of the New Technical School is planned to go ahead on this Saturday evening, May 2nd, 2015 at 7pm in the Bailie Hotel.
Pre/Post 1965 students and family members of deceased students are most welcome to attend.10 euros will be collected at the door to cover the cost of Buffet.

Blue Plaque Unveiling:
Blue Plaque Unveiling – Friday May 8th @ 7pm.
The Ulster History Circle will unveil a Blue Plaque at Trinity Church, Bailieborough on Friday May 8th at 7pm. The plaque will honour Anne Jane Carlile, Temperance Pioneer. She was wife of the Rev. Francis Carlile who ministered to the congregations of Corraneary and Second Bailieborough Presbyterian Churches, 1794 – 1811. The couple were married in 1800 and when Anne Jane came to live in Bailieborough she ran a delph and drapery shop. After her husband’s untimely death in 1811 she went on to become a temperance pioneer and friend of Ireland’s well known temperance reformer Father Mathew. Anne Jane is best remembered as co-founder of the Band of Hope in Leeds, U.K., in 1847. Heather Humphreys Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht will perform the plaque unveiling which is funded by the Ulster-Scots Agency.

Bailieborough Walking Group: 2015 Walking Season:
Bailieborough Walking Group commence their 2015 walking season on Saturday next, May 2nd. This walk will be a community walk and it will be part of the Cavan Walking Festival in association with Cavan Sports Partnership. It will commence at 11am at the Bailieborough Business Centre, Shercock Road and proceed to the forest and Castle Lake. There will be three separate walks. A short walk for parents and children, a moderate walk of about 5 – 6km and a long walk of about 10km. Refreshments in the Business Centre on completion.

East Cavan Gaels GAA Hurling – Club News 27th April 2015
Shane Mulholland RIP
Everyone at East Cavan Gaels extend their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Shane. In his short time with us he had a profound effect on all he met and coached in his role as Hurling Development Administrator here in Cavan. Only recently he put some of our coaches through Foundation and Level 1 hurling courses while also working with ECG boys who are part of both Cavan and South Ulster U14 and U16 squads helping them all the while to become better hurlers while he also had a significant impact on the county minor squad helping them to qualify for an Ulster final.
We cannot but only imagine the impact of his passing will have on his young wife Vanessa and 8 week old daughter Aishling so we ask that you kindly keep them in your thoughts and prayers in the coming days and weeks ahead.
All local hurling activity will be suspended until further notice.
May he rest in peace.
