Mr. Tommy McEntee: Tommy McEntee, 83, from Lisnalea, Bailieborough, passed away suddenly but peacefully on Monday, the 30th of September 2019 in Cavan General Hospital.
Tommy was a devoted husband of fifty four years to Veronica, and the most wonderful father to Bernard, PJ, Gloria, Terry and Jason. He adored his eleven grand-children and eight great grand-children. Tommy had a close relationship with his younger brother Philip, who lives in Kerry. He is also survived by sisters Lena, Susan, Kay, and brothers, Eugene, Gerard and Christy, daughters in-law, Shirley and Caroline, son in-law, Stephen, nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Tommy will be sadly missed by all.
In recent years Tommy suffered with heart problems, resulting in frequent admissions to hospital. He had tremendous respect for the staff in Cavan General, and appreciated their hard work; so much so, that he rewarded them with a daily dose of his jokes and trickery. No matter how unwell he felt, his mission was to make people smile and laugh.
Tommy began his life in Nolagh, Shercock where he was born and reared with his seven brothers and four sisters by their parents Anne and Terence. He attended Corlatty Carroll National School, going straight from there into his first place of employment in Killanny, working as a farmhand. He went from there to a farm in Armagh, and then back to his home town to work for a local farmer named Lexi Hall. In his early thirties he found employment with Cavan County Council as the Water Caretaker in Bailieborough, where he remained for twenty five years until his early retirement.
Tommy and Veronica lived in Drumbannon when their family were young. In those days Tommy’s interests revolved around his children. The simple things like forest walks, days out fishing, picnics on Lough An Leagh Mountain, beach holidays, and even, star gazing on a summer’s night. These were the things that made him a happy man.
Tommy discovered he had green fingers when he and Veronica moved to Lisnalea after his retirement. They spent most of their free time working to maintain their beautiful gardens, where they enjoyed many happy days sitting in the sunshine surrounded by their colourful blooms.
Tommy loved his life and was happiest when surrounded by his family. He had enough love to share between each and every one of them. He will stay in their hearts forever.
Tommy’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Anne’s Church on Wednesday, October 2nd –at which Fr. Ultan McGoohan P.P. officiated—and following which, his remains were laid to rest in St. Anne’s Cemetery.
Photography Exhibition: ‘What Peace looks like to me’ !! All welcome to the launch of a photography exhibition at Bailieborough Courthouse on Sunday next, 20th October at 3.00pm. Guest Speaker, Sean Hillen will deliver a presentation of his work from ‘Melancholy Memories’ and launch the display. Another initiative of the PEACE IV SEUPB programme “Building Positive Relations”. A group of photographers from Bailieborough have collaborated with a group from Dungannon and over a period of time, got a real feel for how they had all been affected by the Troubles. We hope you will come along on the day and over the 6 weeks the exhibition will be on display. Any enquiries to 042-969-4716.
The Cavan 365 community based Garda Youth Diversion project launched recently in Bailieborough
The service is a multi- agency youth crime prevention initiative, that primarily seeks to divert young people who have been involved in anti-social and/or criminal behaviour, by providing suitable activities to facilitate personal development.
We met with and listened to three fine young men, Luke, Josh and Jordon who gave their stories on how the project helped them in Cavan.
The Cavan 365 project will be based in Bailieborough with satellite services planned for Mullagh, Kingscourt, Cootehill and Ballyjamesduff.
The new service is funded through the Youth Justice Service in conjunction with An Garda Síochána and is managed by Foróige.
Well done to all involved in getting this service to Bailieborough and best wishes to the team : Alma, Aishling, Catherina and Sharon under the leadership of Foróige area manager Colin McAree.
October—Month of The Rosary: The Rosary will be said at the Grotto on the Virginia Road for the month of October at 7.30pm, every evening except Saturdays. All are very welcome to come along and pray for their many intentions.
Bailieborough Development Association: Bailieborough Development Association hosted a spectacular weekend of celebration of song. The Hard Times Chorus and Omagh Youth Peace Choir performed at 3 wonderful events : Saturday in St Annes, and Sunday at the Omagh Presbyterian Harvest Festival and at Omagh Library. Thank you to all who attended, we hope to continue our work with these 2 choirs into the future. Special thanks to Daryl Simpson, Musical Director Omagh Youth Peace Choir, Claire O Reilly, Musical Director Hard Times Chorus, Sean O Reilly, Hard Times Chorus Co-ordinator, Jane Crudden and her Team from PEACE IV and Special EU Programmes Body for funding both the renovation of Bailieborough Courthouse and the Programme of Activity. Thank you to all of the choir members who attended practice in the lead up to the event and for your outstanding performance’s over the weekend.

St. Anne’s National School ‘Fun Run’: St. Anne’s N.S. are organising a ‘Fun Run’ on Sunday next, October 20th starting at St. Anne’s National School. Registration will take place from 11.00am on the day. Entry fee is €5 or a donation to take part. Individuals and families are invited to walk or run the 1K, 3K, 5K or 10K routes. Prizes and refreshments also on the day. This event promises to be a colourful occasion, to which the whole school is looking forward to. We would love you to join us for this fun event.
Christianity Explored Course: A ‘Christianity Explored’ course will take place from
8-9pm at The Courthouse in Bailieborough, beginning on Wednesday 23rd of October. This is a 6-week course designed to give you time and space to think about the big questions of life and to explore the life Jesus. Bailieborough Shamrocks GAA in conjunction with Irish Heart Foundation are offering this CPR Training to the whole community.
The course takes just one hour – 60 minutes to learn to save a life!
The instructor will provide all the material and will run 3 CPR courses with 30 people per course..
If we have enough interest then this course will go ahead in late November with the date and venue to be confirmed.

Hardtimes Chorus Choir and The Omagh Peace Choir: As part of the Building Positive Relations initiative sponsored by PEACE IV and SEUPB, ‘Hard Times Chorus’ and The Omagh Peace Choir are presenting a choral collaboration on Saturday next October 12th at 4.00pm in St Annes Church and Sunday, October 13th in Omagh Library. This free event is open to all to attend and is being facilitated by none other than Daryl Simpson of the Celtic Tenors. Bailieborough Poetry Festival 2019: The 7th Bailieborough Poetry Festival took place last weekend. Great readings from featured poets, Moya Cannon, Kate Ennals and Pat Deeley, workshops by Moya and Pat, the launch of the LitLab anthology—entitled ‘Where You may Find Yourself’– and their collaboration with artist Jim McPartlin. It was busy!! The results of the Bailieborough Poetry Festival Competition 2019. The judge was Cavan Writer-in-Residence, Anthony J Quinn.

The announcement and presentation in Bailieborough Library on Saturday was a most enjoyable event. Thanks to those shortlisted poets who attended and read. Thanks also to the winner Christopher James who, though in Thailand, was able to read his poem for us through the wonders of modern technology.
Lit lab writers’ extend thanks to all who helped make Bailieborough Poetry Festival a great success again this year.
We are most grateful to Peter Murtagh who generously provided a wonderful venue for our poetry readings. Special thanks to Cavan Arts for their provision of funding, to Fiona, Marlene, Mary and Anne for facilitating our events in Bailieborough library also to Lee, Bailieborough Development Association for accommodating our workshop.

Bailieborough Heritage Society: Thank You: We had a fantastic turnout last Friday night for the launch of ‘Industrious Bailieborough’. We had wonderful music supplied by harpist Mary Argue and beautiful food from Foxes. Thank you Padraic McIntyre for launching the book. The Courthouse is a fantastic venue, Bailieborough Development Association have to be commended on the fine restoration under the helm of Lee McDonnell, a truly wonder person. Thank-you to all who came and photographers Suella Holland and Kevin Gorman who took photos. We also wish to thank the Special EU Programmes Body Peace IV Project for their financial support, Jane Crudden, Peace Programme Manager, Siobhan and Dennis and the Community and Enterprise team, for their guidance and management, not forgetting our own team. Anyone wishing to obtain a copy of the book, please contact any of the Hertitage Society members.

Presentation: On Tuesday evening last, October 1st, The Bailieborough Mid-Summer Festival committee presented cheques to the value of €500 to members of the Bailieborough Cancer Fund and The Killann Cancer Fund in the B.D.A. Centre, Shercock Rd. The money was the proceeds of the Mid-Summer Festival’s ‘Honda 50 and Vintage Tractor/Car Run’. Also on the night, the Mid-Summer Festival Committee received a cheque for €437.50 from Tesco, Bailieborough as part of Tesco’s ‘Blue Tokens’ promotion.

Trad Musicians Wanted: Calling all amateur traditional musicians. Bailieborough Development Association would like to encourage amateur musicians to come together to share their musical skills and have the craic. Vincent’s Shop: It is getting to that time of the year again, the dreaded ‘C’ word and we would like to ask if any of our regular or new donators can search through their attics, garages, etc… and donate any unwanted Halloween outfits, decorations, bric-a-brac, etc… and also Christmas jumpers, outfits, decorations, boxed toys (preferably new), along with Christmas Bric-a-Brac, so that we can recycle them this year for Christmas instead of them finding a home in landfill!! We also accept all forms of clothing but are especially looking for men and youth clothing from 16 to 24 years of age. Thank you for your continued support of our shop.

Bailieborough Poetry Festival 2019: The 7th Bailieborough Poetry Festival will take place this weekend from Thursday, 3rd to Saturday, 5th October. Building on previous years’ events there will be a refreshing group of poets, artists, readers and musicians. The following is the programme of events for the Festival:
Thursday 3rd October: Venue; Bailieborough Library Arts Space at 7.30 pm: Launch of Festival surrounded by the art work of Jim McPartlin in the Exhibition space. Reading by LitLab members.
Friday 4th October. Venue; Murtagh’s Lounge, Main St.
7.30 pm: Moya Cannon launches LitLab Anthology accompanied by Editor and Cavan Writer in Residence, Anthony J Quinn.
8.30 pm; Moya Cannon, poetry reading.
9.30 pm: Open mic.

Harvest Mission :The Bailieborough Group of Church of Ireland Parishes will be taking part in a diocese wide harvest mission called ‘Gathered In’. All of the mission events are open to everyone and anyone who wants to come along.
Wednesday 2nd October 8pm in the Bailie Hotel, Johnny Cash ‘Walking the Line’ – David Kelly sings the songs of Johnny Cash and relays the ups ad downs of Johnny’s spiritual life story.

October—Month of The Rosary: The Rosary will be said at the Grotto on the Virginia Road for the month of October at 7.30pm, every evening except Saturdays. All are very welcome to come along and pray for their many intentions.
‘Colourful Cavan and Beyond,’ by Artist Jim McParlin. An Art exhibition comprising of paintings depicting scenes from around the county and locations further afield. The exhibition will be on view in the Library until Friday, October 18th. All are welcome during Library opening hours.
Bailieborough Heritage Society: Bailieborough Heritage Society are launching a book entitled’ Industrious Bailieborough on Friday, October 4th at 8.00pm in the newly renovated Courthouse. The book will be launched by local Actor and Playwright, Padraic McIntyre. Refreshments served and all are welcome to attend.
Trad Musicians Wanted: Calling all amateur traditional musicians. Bailieborough Development Association would like to encourage amateur musicians to come together to share their musical skills and have the craic. Deepest Sympathy: Deepest Sympathy is extended to son Thomas, daughters Miriam and Heather, sister Betty, grandchildren Rebecca, Erika and Ava, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and friends, on the death of Gilbert Gibson, Rockview, Lisball, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan, who passed away peacefully at his residence on Monday, September 23rd. Gilbert was predeceased by his wife Harriett. Gilbert’s Funeral Service took place in Corglass Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, September 25th with burial afterwards in the adjoining graveyard.

Vincent’s Shop: It is getting to that time of the year again, the dreaded ‘C’ word and we would like to ask if any of our regular or new donators can search through their attics, garages, etc… and donate any unwanted Halloween outfits, decorations, bric-a-brac, etc… and also Christmas jumpers, outfits, decorations, boxed toys (preferably new), along with Christmas Bric-a-Brac, so that we can recycle them this year for Christmas instead of them finding a home in landfill!! James was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Agnes. Jame’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Annes Church, Bailieborough on Friday morning, September 27th with burial afterwards in St. Annes Cemetery.
