Bailieborough Christmas Lights: Christmas is a time for family and friends, good cheer, good wishes and an extra- special time for children celebrating the season and enjoying the Town being lit up. Unfortunately, we find ourselves in a position whereby there may not be any Christmas lights on the town this year. Over the past few years a group of volunteers, with mostly no business interest in the town, have been organizing events around the town such as, The St. Patrick’s Day Parade, The Midsummer Festival, The Halloween Fright Night and The Christmas Lights. As many of you are aware, The St. Patrick’s Day Parade didn’t go ahead this year, due to a lack of support from members of our community. The town’s Christmas Lights now find ourselves in a similar position which leaves us with no option but to call on the community and businesses of the town to get involved and show your support. If we get the support we need to make this happen, we will hold a public meeting and discuss how we can go forward. It is our town and everybody needs to be involved to ensure that all can enjoy The Christmas Lights, along with all the other community events that happen, so that nobody is disappointed. Be the Somebody who makes these events possible.

Niamh Crosby Comfort Room: Local man Peter Crosby, who lost his daughter Niamh, to ovarian cancer, on Sunday September 18th lastled a motorbike run from Bailieborough to St James’ Hospital to show off  the new facility that their various fundraising efforts had achieved.

Niamh’s Family Comfort Room has been created in St James in her memory and as a way for her family to give something back to the hospital that looked after their daughter through her illness. Peter has organised a number of fundraisers in memory of his beloved daughter and in doing so has raised in excess of  €20,000—most of which has come from the annual Niamh Crosby Easter Sunday Memorial Run.

1947 All -Ireland Remembered: Just a memory, local man Kevin Carolan wants everyone to know it’s the 75th  year anniversary from Cavan won that great All-Ireland final of 1947 in the Polo Grounds in New York, this week, Kevin recalls all those great Cavan footballers in Bailieborough on the day Phil “the Gunner” Brady’s funeral went through the town.  They all came back to former Cavan star, Donal Kelly’s House, where tea and sandwiches were served, great memories. So it’s 70 years from when Cavan last won the  All-Ireland in 1952. Kevin’s mother in law Peggy, recalls the ’47 All-Ireland so well, that she often names the Cavan panel of that era, to his two girls all of which creates more great memories.

Bailieborough News. August 15th 2022 . Matthew J. Cullen.

Hot Spell ends with spectacular Lightning show: The recent spell of hot weather ended on Sunday night last, with the onset of thunderstorms with patchy spells of rain. From about 10.00pm to 1.00am on Sunday night, people were treated to a spectacular show of lightning. Never has this correspondent witnessed such a show, as the sky lit up continously with flashes and it was unusual to see so much fork lightning. Children and adults alike, were facinated by the event and although everbody knows the dangers of lightning, it didnt take away the sense of awe that we were witnessing. A ‘once in a lifetime’ event that we will be able to tell our children and grandchildren about.

A few power outages were recorded and thankfully, there was no major damage to the town and it’s environs.
