This fantastic group of girls ranging in age from 8 to 14 have put in a huge amount of hard work over the past season, forging friendships, progressing their football skills and developing a strong team camaraderie.

Progressing from fielding just one U13 team last season, to teams at U12 and U14 this season, girls soccer in Bailieboro is most definitely on the rise. This season, we’ve had 4 girls representing the club and CMUL at ETP level and beyond;

 Michaela Burke U12 ETP, Lucie Gibson and Sophie Holland U13 ETP,  Grace McKeown and Lucie Gibson U14 ETP and Lucie Gibson North Eastern Centre of Excellence.

With the womens World Cup on the horizon, the popularity of girls soccer is at an all time high.

For any girls, aged 9 and upwards interested in giving it a go, our preseason will be kicking off in August, all details will be posted on the club’s Facebook page.

As these machines are now at the end of their useful lives and spares and servicing are no longer available, they need to be replaced. East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 19^th  June 2023:

CuChulainn League Rd. 2.St.Malachys, Portadown 2-14, East Cavan Gaels 3-21

Balmy conditions in Portadown as our lads made the long, but fruitful trip to the Orchard county to take on the hosts who pushed us to the limit in last years encounter and Wednesdays game was no different. Although we were never headed over the hour the hosts put some real pressure on especially in the third quarter when legs began to get weary in the heat. A rejigged squad gave player/manager Adam Baldwin the opportunity to run the rule over his squad as the Championship comes into view later in the summer but this is a competition that we want to be successful in. Again Dave Higgins performed well in goal and with a rebuilt full back line led by Tadhg Barry with the ever dependable Gary Leddy in one corner and Sean Walsh giving a good performance in his first start in the other corner. The experience of Baldwin and Derek Argue in the half back line was crucial as the more dangerous and creative players on the hosts side were in the half forward line which made for an energy sapping evening but with Jack McGuinness making himself available on the other wing to link up well further up the field. Callum Shiel moved from the “40” into the heat of the midfield and his physicality opened up opportunities for Nicky Kenny to operate at his best with both linking up well with Canice Maher to create a lot of scoring opportunities. Conor Walsh and James Tully brought great youthful speed to the half forward line with Daire Leddy, carrying a knock, still supporting Philip Duffy and the marauding Rory Farrell who’s speed and attacking ability caused the opponents all matter of bother for the entire hour. Both Killian O’Donougue and Caolain O’Reilly made substantial link up play from the bench. All in all another satisfactory nights work and with a few more players to return to the squad the competition for places will heat up.

Special mention to our hosts who were most gracious on the field and afterwards with their kind hospitality with tea and sandwiches.

And thanks to Jayden Gaughan and Shane Kelly who kept the water flowing to the players on what was a very warm evening for hurling.

Under 11s have a bye this week in Monaghan and training on Monday at 7.

U13s had a good days hurling in Cootehill v the hosts and Latton in Tain Og bltz.

U15s had a good game v a strong Enniskillen side on the 3G on Monday last .

Niamh Crosby, Easter Sunday, Memorial Run: Peter, Anna Mai, Sarah Jane, Ciaran and family would like to give a massive ‘THANK YOU’ to everyone who took part in Niamh’s Memorial Run on Easter Sunday. Between registrations, donations and the auction, we have raised 6,510 for St. James Hospital, which will go towards equipment and services of patient care in the ward Niamh had been so well looked after in.  Again, many, many thanks to you all.

Public Consultation meeting in Bailieborough:  Great to see a large crowd in attendance at the Town Centre first public consultation on Tuesday night last.  Really great contributions and suggestions put forward for a master plan for the future of the town and to help create a more vibrant place to live, work and visit.  Cllr Sarah O’Reilly ‘wants to recognise the work that Caroline Brady our Town Regeneration Officer and Frank Cooney, Architect and his team have done with the support of Brendan Jennings and Cavan County Council to date.

Thanks to Cathoirleacht of CCC , Cllr John Paul Feeley for travelling from Blacklion to be in Bailieborough on Tuesday evening. 

I know that this project is in good hands and I am excited for what we can all achieve together in Bailieborough with further public consultation and supports’.

Bailieborough Community School: All Ireland Schools Track and Field Championship : On Saturday last, Eadaoin Lynch, Grace Gormley, and Shane Mulligan represented Bailieborough Community School in Tullamore.

Eadaoin competed in the Junior Girls 100m and 200m races, finishing 5^th  in both events.

Grace competed in the Intermediate Girls Discus, finishing in third position.

Shane Mulligan ran in the Senior Boys 200m.

This competition was a great experience for all three students, and we wish them well for their Ulster Track and Field Championship next weekend.

Killann Community Games: Ladies Football: What a day of football, on Sunday evening last in Stradone. Unfortunately our U12 girls lost by a point but our U14 girls won putting them through to Ulster!!  Fantastic work girls we are super proud of you all !

Official Opening of Amenity Area: The official opening of the newly re furbished amenity area at Loch Barna Grow lake Maudabawn will take place on this Friday evening June 2^nd at 7.00pm.All are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served and there will be some musical entertainment to follow.

Work has been on going over the past year, laying down a tramac surface. A seating area has been developed, along with changing room and cabin have been constructed. The lake, in recent year has become a popular focal point for swimmers, kayaking, runners , and cyclists.  Or indeed, if you just want to go and sit down in a quiet place among the drumlin hills and relax in the peace and quiet of this hidden gem, then this is the place to go to, in the locality.

Cavan County Council is commencing the preparation of a Town Centre First

Masterplan for the future development of Bailieborough.

The aim of this Masterplan is to set out a clear vision for the future direction of the

town’s physical, economic, environmental, social and cultural development. When

completed, the plan will be used to seek funding and attract investment into the

town.

We want to ensure that the Masterplan meets the aspirations of the whole

community, and we would like to meet with all stakeholders within the local

community to hear your views on what should be included in the Masterplan for

your town.

A public consultation on the Masterplan will take place in the Bailie Hotel, Main

Street, Bailieborough on Tuesday next, 30^th  May from 7.30pm – 9.30pm.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

Wednesday, May 31^st: Nobber to Castletown: (E) Walk, 1.5 to 2.00hrs. Leaving Tesco carpark at 6.40pm. In Nobber parking in front of the R. C. Church or on Main St. Parking also at the Library on the righthand side going into Nobber. Walk commencing at 7.15pm.  All Welcome.

Blessing of the Graves, 2023: The Blessing of the Graves will take place in St. Annes Cemetery, Bailieborough on Sunday, September 3^rd at 12 noon.

The Blessing of the Graves will take place in Killann Old Cemetery on Saturday, August 19^th at 7.00pm and the Blessing of the Graves will take place at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Shercock on Sunday, August 20^th, immediately after 11.30am, Mass.

Deepest Sympathy: Deepest Sympathy is extended to husband Pauge, loving daughter Alison, son Stephen, sisters Anita, Maeve, Aileen, Kathleen, Joan and Rosaleen, brothers Francis, Malachy and Liam, son-in-law Pauric, daughter-in-law Laura, grandchildren Éabha, Lorna and Brían, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends on the death of Bernadette (Bernie) Lynch (nee Clarke), Carrigabruise, Virginia, Co. Cavan and formerly of Bailieborough, Co. Cavan, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family in The Mater Hospital, Dublin on Wednesday, May 17^th 2023. Bernie was predeceased by her parents Michael and Kathleen and brothers TM and Gerry.

Bernie’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Matthew’s Church, Maghera, on Saturday, May 20^th and afterwards, Bernie’s remains were laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Bailieborough Library: ‘The Corleck Head and Other Aspects of East Cavan’s Ancient Past’ a lecture by Jonathan Smyth will take place here in the Library on Thursday evening May 25^th  at 7pm as part of our Bealtaine celebrations.

We are delighted to welcome our colleague Jonathan. He is the author of ‘Gentleman and Scholar: Thomas James Barron, 1903 – 1992’; a member of Cumann Seanchais Breifne, and a regular contributor to The Anglo-Celt.

Careers: Thinking of changing career, need advice on careers, educational needs, CV help, interview skills – CMETB (Cavan Monaghan Education and Training Board) will facilitate a FREE drop in service at the Library on the first Thursday of each month starting on Thursday June 1^st 2023 from 2pm-4.30pm. No appointment is necessary.

Book Club: In May, the Bailieborough Library Reading Group will be reading ‘The Paris Apartment’ by Lucy Foley. New members are always welcome and copies of the book are available in the Library! The next meeting of the Book Club is on Tuesday, May 30^th at 6.30pm.

Bailieborough Celtic A.F.C: Great start to the season for the Bailieboro Celtic Senior Men’s side , who are playing their football in the N.E.F.L. Division 2. The team has won their first four matches and now are top of the division. Keep up the good work and the best of luck for the season!

Lough an Leagh ‘Moonwalk’: The Lough an Leagh ‘Moonwalk’ 2023 will take place on Lough an Leagh on Saturday, June 3^rd, commencing at 8.15pm, from the Picnic Area on Lough an Leagh. All proceeds go to local Cancer Charities. Entry fee is €10 and refreshments will be served afterwards. All welcome.

Walk, Jog or Run:  Run, Walk or Jog is back for the lovely bright evenings at 8pm at the Chapel car park, Lakeshore, Bailieborough on every Monday and Wednesday. It’s a fun, free activity, all newcomers welcome.  Other activities will be added as the weeks go on, like open water swimming, cycling and kayaking. All welcome. 

Official Opening of Amenity Area: The official opening of the newly re furbished amenity area at Loch Barna Grow lake Maudabawn will take place on Friday evening June 2^nd at 7.00pm.All are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served and there will be some musical entertainment to follow.

Work has been on going over the past year, laying down a tramac surface. A seating area has been developed, along with changing room and cabin have been constructed. The lake, in recent year has become a popular focal point for swimmers, kayaking, runners , and cyclists.  Or indeed, if you just want to go and sit down in a quiet place among the drumlin hills and relax in the peace and quiet of this hidden gem, then this is the place to go to, in the locality.
