East Cavan Gaels Hurling Review 2019
Another great year both on and off the field for East Cavan Gaels. Our Senior side completed their first full season of competitive hurling and we added an Under 7 team by themselves at the end of the year and the not so small fact that we are now a fully official GAA club, the same as any in any county. We also celebrate ten years of local hurling and look forward to the next ten when all of our dreams will be realised!
Below is a snap of some of our activities in 2019.
Again thank you all for all of your combined help. Roll on 2020!!
Our Seniors had a very good year. We played in the Cavan league, the Monaghan reserve league and the Cavan Championship. We reached the league final in Cavan going down by just a few points to Mullahoran. We played 7 very competitive games in the Monaghan reserve league which had us well prepared for the Cavan Championship. The three games were lost but it does not tell even part of the story. The cumulative defeat total of nine points over the three games shows how far we have come and developed over the years. New faces joining with us kept all the lads on their toes. We are really looking forward to 2020 with the same competitions as well as the new Cu Cuchulainn Cup in the summer also. Well done to all who have pulled on the blue jersey this year. The future is bright.
Under 15/17;
Another fine year of development for these groups. The Under 15s continued to develop well reaching the final of the Tain league. More competitive games in the run up to this final would have had our lads in better shape but all in all they can be happy with their performances this year. The U17s, of which is made up mostly of the same squad of under 15s plus our older lads put in a superb performance in winning Div 2 of the Cavan league. Missing some regulars due to injuries the lads put in a real shift and ran out convincing winners. The older Under 17s will now move into our Senior squad for the first time and we look forward to their continuing development over the coming years. The U15s will have to wait a little bit longer but they are a great bunch who have been together for a considerable period.
Under 15 squad.
Under 17 squad.
Under 17 league winners!
Under 13;
A mixed year for our Under 13s. They performed very well week after week in the Tain league but the results did not reflect the serious effort these lads put in. The league final in Breffni Park was a highlight and while defeated by a strong Latton side they showed lots of what they are made of in a good performance. One of the hardest working groups in the club they continued their hard work throughout the year and we look forward to some of these lads moving up to Under 15 next year while the lads turning 13 will have a new group to bolster them coming up from U11. Well done to all.
Under 13s at league final.
Under 13s in Cootehill.
Under 13s in Breffni 3G.
Under 13s in Carrick.
Under 13s in Kingscourt.
Under 11;
Another good year for these lads. We work hard to get them the games they need. We start off in January in Dundalk blitz and work our way literally around the province and country to continue to give them lots of differing opposition. These lads have responded with some very impressive performances and forming a good unit as some of these lads have been hurling for quite a few years. The league final in Breffni Park under lights was an undoubted highlight but their actual work throughout the year was exemplary. We look forward to seeing them again in 2020 and also look forward to seeing those promoted to the Under 13 side in the coming year.
Under 11s in Derrynoose blitz, Armagh in July. Played very well against top class Ulster opposition.
Under 11s at a Breffni Blitz. Great squad!
Under 11s at the league final.
Under 11s at Dundalk blitz in January.
Big Under 11 squad in Dundalk in February
Under 9;
Another great year with these lads. The year began in Dundalk at the big Ulster blitz and again these lads continued the fine form from the previous year playing very well wherever they went.
Under 9s indoor hurling.
More U9 indoors.
Under 9s at a very cold Carlanstown in March
Under 7;
2020 saw East Cavan Gaels have a specific Under 7 side for the very first time. Up to now Under 7s joined in with the Under 9s and did their best. We had a look and saw that there were even more boys looking to join with us but did not want to start with the bigger boys. We decided to start as per usual with our indoor crew and had our first sessions in Bailieborough in October. The response has been fantastic so far. We are very thankful to all the new players and their parents that have joined with us this year and we look forward to seeing where their journey takes them.
Under 7s indoors, lots of them!
Miscellaneous!!
No fear!! Max and Harry v Wolfe Tones!!
Gary Leddy captains Cavan U15s V Donegal.
First ever County Convention as an “official” club. L-r; Willie, Brendan, Adam and Kathryn.
Croke Park in August!
Under 11s in serious company at Derrynoose blitz in July. We have been invited back for 2020!
New Under 11 jerseys. Bought with your support.
Under 13 final. Thomas Watt Captain.
Jack Barry and Cian McEntee flew the senior inter county flag for us in the NHL and Lory Meagher competitions this year. Hold tight lads, the cavalry is coming in the years ahead!
Please support those who support us. Without them life would be more difficult. Thank you.
Two years in a row! Congrats Tosh!
Bríen holds the fort!
Colin continues his upward trajectory in athletics. How long can we hold on to him?!
We want!!! If you know any good builders+concrete suppliers!!!
Thank you.

Bailieborough News January 2nd 2020
/in News /by Liz FlemingBailieborough News. January 2nd 2020. Matthew J. Cullen.
Christmas in Bailieborough: Attendances at all the religious services in the area were up on previous years, with many people and their families returning home from Australia, England, the U.S.A., and many other countries for the Festive occasion. The Christmas spirit was in evidence—particularly on Christmas Eve—with the Annual Christmas Carol singing by the Bailieborough Cancer Fund.
Footfall in the local shops was up and in the run up to Christmas, trying to get parking on Main St., was a nightmare at times but shoppers made good use of the car parks in the town and fair play to Francis and Aiden Clarke, who made their car park available for the Festive period.
The Christmas Lights also added a lot of festive cheer and feel to the town and all involved with the project deserve thanks for all their hard work and commitment.
A big ‘well done’ to everyone who took part in the Christmas Day Swim in Bailieborough. It was cold and frosty but also bright and sunny and the conditions didn’t hold the locals back, from the traditional Christmas Day Swim which was being held for the 26th time, with the proceeds going to the Bailieborough Senior Citizens Day Centre.
The Athletic Club’s Annual St. Stephen’s Day run was well supported with participant’s eager to clear the cobwebs after Christmas Day and the by now Annual Walk on the 28th of December was very well supported.
Bailieborough Men’s Shed: Recently the Men’s Shed in Bexcourt, Bailieborough had the majority of their power tools stolen in a burglary. Garda Owen Finn, Bailieborough Garda Station, is the liaison Garda with the group and is hosting a Table Quiz in the Bailie Hotel in Bailieborough on Friday, 3rd January 2020 to help raise funds to replace their tools. All proceeds from the night will go directly to the Men’s Shed. Table of 4 is €20.00 (or €5.00 pp) and the starting time is 7pm. Please come along if you are free and support this local cause.
‘Operation Transformation’ 2020—Community Event: Everyone welcome. No registration required—just come along. Open to the entire community—of all ages!!
